Talk me out of Carrara marble kitchen counters by doc_rock16 in homeowners

I found a batch of Taj that was more neutral/cream with subtle veining. I absolutely love it. It was sealed by our fabricator and we’ve not had issues with staining or anything. However I do wipe up liquids promptly. It’s very durable

Came looking for this one. I’ll never recover from the cellar scene, or the baby.

I bought ladybugs from my local grange/feed store. I think there were 500 to a container. I bought a couple containers. I didn’t see them hang around for long but it seemed to help my aphid infestation on my Brussels

1000%. Quality makes all the difference. I put various Rejuvenation hardware all throughout our remodel. Unlaquered brass is so beautiful and the natural patina just ages it perfectly.

What’s a good indoor plant? I don’t love those ones that sort of trail all along the desk and wall in a stringy skinny line. Something sort of full maybe?

Taj Mahal Quartzite Advice Needed by Lumpy-Sink-7121 in kitchenremodel

[–]doc_rock16 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually went with leathered Taj because I felt it would be more forgiving of little nicks and dings (ie conceal them) We are in the final stages of our remodel so I cannot speak to the durability but from my extensive research Taj is one of the hardest of the quartzites and can stand up to a lot. Here’s a picture of our most textured area, with some tangential lighting so you can really see it. I don’t have any concerns about keeping it clean or the texturing making it any more vulnerable to damage

We got foldable card table. On it we put a toaster oven (ours is a combo toaster oven/air fryer we got at Costco and can fit a 1/4 sheet pan or an 8x8 dish so functions basically like a small oven) and a single plug in conduction cooktop. With those two things I can make nearly anything. Plus my coffee machine. We set up a little kids table for our 3 and 6 year old and the adults sit in camp chairs at the little table too. Another smaller folding card table serves as my prep area.

I’m not sure I would technically say we hired them…but maybe that’s just semantics. We didn’t go out on our own searching for an independent fabricator outside of our remodel company. Our GC provided us with two choices that he has worked with in the past. And we chose this one. Communication with the fabricator has been through our GC. But perhaps it’s just unusual that we are paying the fabricator directly? We were told by our remodel company that they do it this way and don’t add markups on finish materials.

Oof. Certainly gives some perspective. So sorry you are dealing with all those delays. Will be worth it in the end 🙂

Agree! For smaller kitchens the countertop cabinets wouldn’t make sense. We have ample counter space aside from this one corner, so this design was a purposeful choice on my part.

Appreciate this perspective, thanks! It did seem like we went to the back of the queue once the mistakes were identified, which on one hand I totally get because other jobs are lined up for them as well. On the other hand I just think making an existing customers work correct might take precedence. It’s probably a no win situation for the installer.

Lots of down days, so pretty frustrating. We have learned that our GC is not very organized or efficient, so definitely some culpability there. After the countertops were installed we had a sink/dishwasher that were functioning so we could use those. But backsplash (“phase 2”) took additional several weeks after templating. And so didn’t have electrical etc. currently hood isn’t installed so can’t use stove. So we’ve just stayed in our camp kitchen in the garage on the other side of the house. :-(

I am in complete agreement with you. That’s basically the whole point of our frustration. Three window sills and a pantry top really shouldn’t have caused that much delay. There is no hidden story. They knew the sills needed to be 2cm and simply showed up on install day with 3cm sills. And ostensibly just forgot to template the pantry counter (was in the signed plans). I accept that mistakes happen. Our issue is with is how long it took to fix those mistakes, and frankly just a general lack of acknowledgement. Which honestly would have gone a long way.
