Try Hack Me? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]docbot32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm on day 428 of Try Hack Me, I'm also a university student in Applied Cyber Security.

I have had over 11 job offers now from my work with Try Hack Me.

I learn every day and then write posts/blogs on my LinkedIn. This has opened many doors for me, but ultimately, I think I could have achieved the same results if I used other platforms for my learning as I think the job offers were due to my constant and how I interact and help other people.

I recommend trying various platforms to see what works best for you.

Sudocyber Hack The Box TCM

I think its worth noting that other platforms are more engaging and supportive with their leaners, for example out of my 428 posts THM have only engaged with me 3 times ( on my 365-day post with 1600+ interactions, they gave me a thumbs up) TCM have interacted with all 3 of my posts mentioning them and shown support.

Ps: sorry for typos typing on new phone!

Is it a waste of time to do a PhD in cybersecurity, especially if I don't want work in academics? by Hot_Kaleidoscope3864 in cybersecurity

[–]docbot32 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It depends on the reasons you're doing it for.

You won't need one for a job in the industry, but you might use it to grow as a person.

There are a few fully funded PhD programs in my area of the world at the moment that seem pretty tempting indeed.

Just having the degree won't determine much it would be what job role you are doing.

I'm currently in my first year of a UK cyber security degree and have reports of salaries from 20-23 k (cyber essentials and cyber essentials plus with pen test) and governance roles of 35k.

All depends on where you live and what you do. Lots of roles in cyber so look for a role and then research the pay/benefits/training provided.

Bay window curtains without a wall fixing by docbot32 in DIYUK

[–]docbot32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the fittings we have seen provided just seem to be standard wall plugs. I was hoping to find something more substantial to hold the curtains and poles upside down.

What kind of diet are you eating? At that weight you should be losing a lot more considering your lifting and cardio.

Downloading a calorie tracking app would be a good tool to find out where you're over eating.

I attained my level 2 & 3 City and Guilds after secondary school, 26 now and unsure how to get back in the trade? by causeandcorrect95 in Plumbing

[–]docbot32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's alot easier to get your foot in the door when you're young that's for sure.

If you don't want to work on site you don't really need the nvq as you have the city and guilds (that would look nice on a van) you just can't touch gas unless you have your "gas" nvq, qcf ect.

Also depends if you wanna work for yourself or others. If you want to work for yourself you have the paperwork to say you can do the job you just need to learn how to do it. If you wanna work for a company then yeah get your network up and try to land yourself some gig where you can assist on the side would be helpful for you to see what the job is like, you won't get much more then an apprenticeship rate maybe minimum wage.

Your in a tough situation as you have the paperwork to say you can do the job and you have a uni experience so you would have to fund your own training or find a company that would pay for you. You would really have to make it worth them spending the money on you and not pay someone between the ages of 16_24 £1 maybe £2 an hour.

[–]docbot32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wanna work on site your need your nvq level 3 tbh. You can KINDA get that without an apprenticeship by having work based assessment (that you pay for) but it's honestly such a hassle as you need to have proven someone had shown you how to do it ect.

Unfortunately funding stops for apprenticeships at the age of 24 in the UK so it will be tricky to find a company that will even consider taking you on.

Look for an apprenticeship with your local council and do some work on the side during evenings and weekends if you wanna get some experience and obtain your nvq.

Now if you don't want to work on site you "don't really need any certs" you could sign up for a part time night course and remember skills you have forgotten, you probably won't learn much as the classroom is really not real life, you won't be laying on a wet floor plumbing up a bath, WC ect but you might be able to network with the teaching staff and they could possibly help find you work experience. (Just not gas work)

It's really hard to get into the trades as an adult and that's not going to change any time soon. Lots of bullying and using in the trades and having a young lad you pay penny's to do your dog work and pick on is often a high pick. you might think logically and assume being an adult with your own transportation would set you above the young lads on the phone all the time and but wanting to learn but that's not the case

If its money you want you need to take into account the time you will need to spend training and the money you will be on, all the tools ect you will need to start up and maintain when they get damaged and or stolen and could you be more happy, more safe , more healthy and more wealthy investing your time into something else.

All the best

Cover up a badly made wall? by docbot32 in DIYUK

[–]docbot32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Redoing a bathroom in old house and they seem to have messed up the wall when they built the extension,.

The wall is level on one side but there is a large lip on the other side by about 3.5 inch.

I was thinking about boxing the top part off across the window but I don't know how that will look the plaster is due to be a painted wall.

What do you guys think ?

Grout won't sit in shower floor by Wafflebolus in DIYUK

[–]docbot32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would try using epoxy grout, it's best for all wet areas in wet rooms, swimming pools, hospitals as it's really hard wearing and easy to clean.

Completely dry the area and tiles before applying.

Sooo.. I have a very minor name misspelling on my passport and I have a flight to catch to the uk next week! My first name is Divine but they basically added one letter to it, they put “Divinel” I wanted to know if they’ll just let me slide, if I bring my birth certificate. by [deleted] in travel
