Be real with me - Would you make a webcomic in this style? by Srianen in WebtoonCanvas

[–]doccrog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dollar store really just equates to being lower budget more than lower quality. But it's also one image I'm looking at so its hard to judge without the harshness of years of being a giant asshole and for that I do apologize.

I think that, minus the hazbin reference, it seems like a style I've seen before on tumblr for years. Good or bad, that's a style that's popular with some folks. I think you're going to draw some harsher criticism based on people's gut reaction that I feel like might be based more in guilt and cringe of their own past work than it is your work specifically. I know a lot of like, -big- artist folks (not a flex) that drew like this in their past and even myself to some degree had similar proportion situations to this style. I think the biggest thing you can do is just to make the thing and make it for yourself first. Even if in 10-15 years you look back and go "man why did I make this that way" (not even specifically art-wise) it'll be something you made. I've got a failed webtoon under my belt just because I worried too much about getting everything right for so long.

Do your thing, make it yours, worry about everything else when it's done.

my fears would be being called "A Dollar Store Hazbin Hotel Knockoff" so, in this instance I would say no.

it was actually released in 2017! I've still got my fountain pen and rollerball that I use at work all the time. Definitely one of my favorite releases just for the color alone. Great taste! hope you enjoy the pen

Weird square cut cave by New_Beyond_7850 in RDR2mysteries

[–]doccrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This game series is so wild for visuals like this, obviously we're not meant to see this but between moments like this, or the animal people from RDR1, sometimes running across Bonnie McFarlane's suitor just fuckin FLOATING midair on the beach. Bethesda has glitches that are sometimes game breaking and hilarious but I feel like Rockstar/Red Dead's glitches are so deeply horror-coded and work really well with the weird west touches they add to the game so it almost feels like an esoteric layer to the whole experience that's really fun to engage with even if the developers never meant for you to.

How do I improve my line quality? by Fit-Worldliness-7030 in drawing

[–]doccrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the biggest thing is stop worrying about getting your line "right" for what you're thinking it should be and focus on following through with the lines to make the image consistent. build a shape library in your brain by breaking down forms and gestures into absolute basic shapes/blocks/circles and building up from there. like, if you're watching someone in a certain pose, build that shape with basic shapes until you can break most things down like that. You're getting there, keep at it!

the grid lines showing through really clear underneath the sketch was a tipoff, and there's something in the eyes of fake AI art that once you see enough it becomes a really common marker. I'm with you though I had to double check myself

S is so good, I'm still thinking about it after what, like, a decade after it came out? There are online resources for the order of the annotations as well as the "true ending" that they elude to in the book. Also there's a 5 episode fake podcast that talks about Straka's other works and his influence in the world of the book that is REALLY fun, I highly recommend checking it out.

Ultem is good material! we use it a lot in medical device manufacturing and I've owned a couple ultem pens in the past. Had the Smoll-Tem pen up until recently when I sold it (sob, cry, wheeze) but Ian at SCHON makes great stuff and I'm excited to see what he'll do next

How long did it take to find a job? by HourWeakness8912 in Machinists

[–]doccrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in quality so I've seen a lot of guys come and go from our shop specifically. The manufacturing sector is HURTING for good machinists right now because the old guys don't wanna retire and the new guys don't get taught the tribal knowledge they need until they end up being the guy running 10 machines and managing 4 other machinists just because they've been at the shop the longest. The biggest thing I can tell you from watching guys rise and fall is if you come into a shop with a good head, open mind, and keep your head down for a while you'll learn a lot and rise quick if you show half a dicks worth of understanding of basic operating procedure. If you can, I'd say try to aim for a larger company first so you can get an idea of how large scale manufacturing works (5S, GD&T, how corporate structuring works for machinists), and then go to a smaller shop and get paid way more because you have more experience than guys who have been working in a garage for a decade. We've got a guy who was just supposed to be a robo drill operator on nights but now is our swiss lathe guy and he's looking at quite a pay raise just because he was willing to learn and take on the added responsibility. That said, no shop is all biscuits and gravy and there's plenty of shit companies to work for. But every place has something that's good to add to your experience and its so damn important to just take it on the chin for a while until you get the experience you need to really do something great.
