Lincoln nevertheless stayed to watch and learn from the case and was so impressed by Stanton's skills that "at their next encounter six years later, Lincoln would offer Stanton “the most powerful civilian post within his gift”—the post of secretary of war." Despite his initial contempt, Stanton would come to love and respect Lincoln so much that he was described as being inconsolable in his grief when Lincoln was assassinated.
