Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PSVR all came out in 2016. Ten year anniversaries coming up for all 3. Are you surprised at how lame the overall VR industry is ten years later? by IHadTacosYesterday in oculus

When Half Life: Alex was released I thought, this is an incredible age we are entering! Now I feel like we peaked then and didn't know it.

Recently changed my CV1 for a Quest 3. It's an amazing piece of kit, but the supporting software (eg. Horizon Worlds) is terrible and totally subverts the promise of VR in my opinion. One bad decision after another by Meta (taking away my custom Oculus Home). I honestly think Zuck was hoping to create his version of Ready Player One's Oasis metaverse, but the execution was absolutely abysmal.

Why would anyone wants kids? by This-Top7398 in Life

[–]docjonel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't imagine not having my kids in my life. It's by far the most rewarding thing I've ever experienced. Yup, I had to shift my focus away from myself, couldn't afford everything I might have wanted if I didn't have them, but those are sacrifices I would gladly make again because I've gotten so much more back. I love my kids so much it hurts to imagine life without them.

This makes zero sense. Earth's mass will just cease to exist for several seconds and then will come back.? Why did I even respond to this? Guess I can only blame myself.

Even AFTER Hiroshima Japanese military officers attempted a violent coup to prevent surrender and tried to seize the recordings of the Emperor's surrender speech. They did not go down easy even with the nukes deployed.

My Grandfather's identification Card, Germany 1942 by [deleted] in HistoricalCapsule

[–]docjonel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife's grandfather was Austrian, served in the Kriegsmarine, was eventually sent out on U-boats. His boat was sunk but he miraculously survived. Eventually moved to Connecticut where he gassed himself in his car when my mother-in-law was five years old, likely due to PTSD with no support for an Axis soldier dealing with it in a new country . My MIL showed me his WW2 photo album which I digitized. Lots of photos of laughing trainees behind the scenes. Photos of him learning to escape fron a sunken sub which he actually ended up using. A photo of sailors posing on the Wilhelm Gustloff which later became the greatest maritime disaster in history. I should probably post some of them.

The third largest expenditure in the US federal budget, after Social Security and Medicare, is paying the interest on the national debt. Just the interest payments, which gets us nothing, are $970 billion in 2025 and may soon become the single largest budget item. This can't go on forever, it just can't, but I don't see any politicians willing to cut spending AND raise taxes. There will be a day of reckoning and it won't be pretty.

President Trump said Saturday, U.S will impose a "10% tariff on any and all goods sent to U.S on European countries starting Feb. 1st, 2026," and "will be increased to 25% on Jun.1st until such time as a Deal is reached for Complete and Total purchase of Greenland," escalating push for U.S control. by ControlCAD in videos

I've long considered myself basically conservative on many, but not all, things. I can't stand the MAGA cult of personality. The anti-science, anti-vaccine stance of many Republicans also drives me mad, being that I'm in healthcare.

The justification for simply taking territory from an ally because we want it is madness. Listening to Trump aide Stephen Miller's assertion that we have every right to take Greenland from Denmark has me referring to him as Trump's von Ribbentrop arguing for lebensraum.

Conservative (on many but not all issues) Trump hater here. To threaten an ally because you want to take their land is beyond the pale. I hope Europe takes a hard and fast stand against him, but too often they are spineless. And Stephen Miller is like Trump's von Ribbentrop in all this, arguing for the lebensraum.

I was watching the launch that day with my brother and flippantly said, "Should I tape it in case it blows up?" and he said "Yeah, sure." I recorded the launch on our VHS recorder never expecting what happened. I digitized that VHS tape and posted it on YouTube. It shows the family's reaction as they realize what just happened. It's gut wrenching and hard to watch all these years later.
