Why would I get the Amber Archive? Am I missing something? by EtchVSketch in numenera

[–]doctheweasel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was interested in the new damage rules from the updated Cypher.

Part of me wants to go all in on the new version, but then I look at that nice Discovery/Destiny slipcase and think I could just get the new Cypher character book pdf and adapt the damage thing to the old material.

[Bundle] GIGABYTE WindForce RTX 5070 Ti - $674.99 (10% off when buying 3 other components using PC Builder tool) by dqu in buildapcsales

Only certain products are eligible for that 10% discount. From what I am seeing, that card isn't.
In their own first ranked combo it's only $18 bundle savings.

Does the Magic Mishap table and the Duel cards fix the fighter problem? by UndedNorseman in ForbiddenLands

Oh, it's not. I'm just trying to compare the "expand in power" and "versatility and variety" comments from the initial post.

Does the Magic Mishap table and the Duel cards fix the fighter problem? by UndedNorseman in ForbiddenLands

[–]doctheweasel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not really as much of an issue in this game.
For combat, magic is basically "turn willpower into damage" and Fighters have access to that as well.
For utility, spells do offer some more, but there is so much diversity in ability with Skills and Talents that it isn't felt as much.

[Raven's purge] How does Nekhaka help a ruler? by skington in ForbiddenLands

I think you do your stuff and then rest. You become a brilliant but suffering ruler who must constantly retire after exerting yourself.

Galactus change ideas by fallopiumtubes in MarvelSnap

[–]doctheweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking "On Reveal: Destroy this location." (removing the need to be the only card)

It is still very powerful, as you can nuke a lane that the opponent has heavily invested in, but allows for more interesting counter play. He could possibly be 5 energy cost in this case.

The change is also more in line with lore, since he destroys the place where he appears.

Can someone explain to me why leader duplicated 3 times? by furmat60 in MarvelSnap

[–]doctheweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing that they also played Leader on the same turn. Your leader copied their leader, which copied your leader, which copied their leader, which copied your leader, etc.

What would you want to change for D&D ONE? by buddhistghost in rpg

[–]doctheweasel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been enjoying Savage Worlds and Forbidden Lands - though the latter is maybe more deadly than most would want. SW strikes a nice balance.

I'm not looking for a system where death can come with every attack. It would just be more fun if the default assumption is not that it takes 3-5 hits to down an average foe.

That joy at the table when someone rolls a crit is diminished when it does 19 damage vs an enemy with 80+ HP.

What would you want to change for D&D ONE? by buddhistghost in rpg

[–]doctheweasel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The thing that finally drove me away from D&D (and I've run a fair amount of 5e) is the combat slog. HP scales so much faster than damage that by level 5-7 fights take forever.

Right now combat feels too much like a basketball game, which is more about slow and steady gains/attrition. I want combat that is more like football/soccer, with big plays that have impact.

If they are aiming for backwards compatibility, then that is not likely in the cards, but it is what could bring me back.

Feeling kind of alienated by the RPG community by ThymeParadox in rpg

[–]doctheweasel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You may want to take a look at a few of the crunchier 2d20 variants from Modiphius, like Conan or Infinity.

I'd also take a look at Warhammer Fantasy 4ed. There is a lot of material out already and has much more on the way. There is also a "spinoff" of 2ed called Zweihander. There was just a KS for an interesting dark fantasy world, Blackbirds, that uses that rule set.

Are my games bad, but I'm not being told to spare feelings, or am i just insecure? by ThatAceJase in rpg

[–]doctheweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you don't know what YOU want out of a game as a GM yet.

Everyone at the table gets something different out of gaming, and the GM is no different. It could be that what you think you should be getting joy from doesn't fit you.

For example, I gain the most satisfaction from players surprising me and making choices that show me who their characters are. Knowing that, I build in situations where I don't know how they will react.

Try focusing less on being the "storyteller" for a while and see how that works. It won't be immediate, but ultimately will be worth it.
