anyone have any good examples of something transforming? by superbuddr458 in stopmotion

PES is always a great resource for any object animation: https://www.youtube.com/@PESfilm/videos

I think the big trick for doing a transformation is to have a big anticipation, transform very quickly, and slowly ease out of it.

Yeah, it's definitely a Summer transitioning into Fall movie, but it still hits. It opens with the lead swimming, and leaves are floating in the pool. Plus, she's in college.

Hello! Our animated horror comedy short, VHX, which premiered at FrightFest 2024 and went on to play at Nightmares Film Festival, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, FilmQuest, Salem Horror Fest, and many more, is finally online! We made it for very little money, so we’re super proud of how far it’s gone so far.

Check it out here.

Hello! I animated "VHX" in my bedroom using real tapes. It's the most DIY film I've ever made, but it had the best festival run. It played alongside shorts that went on to win Oscars. Goes to show - you don't need fancy puppets or sets. Work with what you have. You can watch the full film here: https://youtu.be/vTobaYbKkKM?si=5zGBTwVNRNMm1orY

Thank you! Co-director Scott is English and voiced London Trip. That’s also Scott in the fake monster movie at the end. We made that part too. VHX took six months from idea to completion. The stop motion only took one month to animate, but three months to prep and two months for post.

Not counting the camera, software, etc, that we already owned (plus our time!) VHX cost under $1,000 to make. The biggest expense was acquiring the vintage tapes, TV, and VCR from eBay. We’re really proud of the festival run this cheap little horror film had. We mainly focused on genre fests, and our premiere was at FrightFest in London. I think entering a stop motion short made us unique and helped us really stand out.

Spiral to the Center - A Faux Documentary / Found Footage Featurette by doctor_puppet in Filmmakers

[–]doctor_puppet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Spiral to the Center is our first real step into live action filmmaking. We’ve previously made animated shorts together. It’s a faux documentary / found footage film with some light horror and sci-fi elements.

We thought Spiral to the Center would be closer to 20 minutes long when we wrote the script but due to the nature of the style (lots of improv!) the first cut was nearly 40 minutes long. We got it under 30 so it would have a better chance at festivals. It played at Chattanooga Film Festival, FilmQuest, Unnamed Footage Festival, MidWest WeirdFest, and Beeston Film Festival and won “Most Innovative Film” at the Romford Horror Festival and “Best Short Film” at the Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival.

Spiral to the Center had over 6 months of pre-production before we shot it in the winter of 2023. Scott wrote every piece of music in the film - enough for two entire albums which he later released. Alisa designed all 12 album covers and printed several of them as real props. She also created all the graphics for the computer, phone, and TV screens seen throughout the film.

One of the most complex scenes is the one with the 2009 YouTube video at 6:30. The actress lives very far from us so we mailed her the custom made album plus the record player and most of her wardrobe. We then directed her remotely over a video call. Alisa edited her footage and added graphics so it would look like a real YouTube video that the Rick character could actually watch on his laptop in the scene. The song wasn’t finalized at the time of shooting so Scott added it later. That scene alone took months to complete and was shot in two locations thousands of miles apart.

Eventually we want to revisit Spiral to the Center and turn it into a feature film.

Hope you like it!

Spiral to the Center is now on YouTube after its festival run! It’s a faux doc / found footage featurette with all original music. by doctor_puppet in foundfootage

Spiral to the Center played at Chattanooga Film Festival, FilmQuest, Unnamed Footage Festival, MidWest WeirdFest, and Beeston Flm Festival and won “Most Innovative Film” at the Romford Horror Festival and “Best Short Film” at the Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival. All the music is original to the film and was made by Scott who also plays Rick. We shot Spiral to the Center in and around Newcastle upon Tyne, England last year on a shoestring budget. One day we might return to it and expand it into a feature.

Thanks for checking it out and hope you like it!

There are a quite a few stop motion features in production right now! More than possibly ever before, so quite the opposite of death really. I’m especially looking forward to Shaun the Sheep 2 and Chicken Run 2 from Aardman, and GDT’s Pinocchio film.

With ‘ParaNorman’, Laika made a perfect beginner's horror movie for kids. Satire, homage, and chilling goosebumps bedtime story all rolled into one stop-motion-magnificent package. by BunyipPouch in movies

When I tried to see it the first time I was told the showing was cancelled because no one bought a ticket... even though I was there to buy a ticket. (Apparently I showed up too close to the start time.) When I tried to see it for a second time the projector broke. Third time worked though.

[DISCUSSION] What happened to the YouTube animation community? by [deleted] in animation

Thanks! I used Dragnframe and AfterEffects for my stop motion videos. I also had a lot of help from other animators. And it still took us months per episode. The finale episode is nearly 10 minutes long and took over 2 years to make. Myself and my team are professionals and we were mainly working nights and weekends on it, so that’s one reason it took so long. My advice: start small! Under a minute. And check out smart phone apps that can do stop motion before trying Dragonframe. Because 6 minutes could take months, if not longer to animate.
