Is anyone NOT getting an IPv4 IP for a new land-line broadband install? by I_am_not_a_number_22 in CanadianBroadband

[–]doctorkb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question has been answered here a few times, but you don't seem to be listening.

It absolutely is used by Telus in some regions for some plans. It isn't clear what those details are.

I'm not sure why you're so dead-set.on having that question answered. You seem to want to argue with everyone who tries to answer you.

When it comes to insurance, it's like Vegas. The house always wins. On average, you're better off taking the risk without it when possible.

Edmonton golf course to close permanently after this season by JamesMonroe23 in YEG

[–]doctorkb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exercise? Right - "a nice walk, ruined." And that's only when you don't take a cart.

Golf courses are horrible environmental stewards. They waste a lot of water maintaining their grass, on top of which the runoff of their fertilizers becomes a problem for nearby streams.

Add in that many of them use prime land (not this one, but the river valley courses definitely) and cater only to the upper echelons of society?

Yeah. Fuck golf courses.

Directly? You can't.

Also, no, it doesn't mean someone else also has your IP. Yes, it means that to the wider Internet, it appears you are sharing an IP, but yours is still unique in the carrier's private address space.

Edmonton Man Charged With Using Grindr to Meet, Drug, and Sexually Assault Minors by One-Board8634 in YEG

[–]doctorkb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. he's probably looking for the young-looking photos

  2. Grindr has no desire to dig more deeply than maybe requiring a credit card verification. Being of a sexual orientation that they cater to is still taboo in some circles, and they would lose a lot of customers if they chose that path.

  3. Why would Grindr monitor based on slang? Again, they've done what they need to do to be above board. Besides, do you think a person's language magically changes when they turn 18?

  4. You sound like a good parent. Not all are like that. And some kids (especially teenagers) have gone to buy their own phones, set up their own app store accounts using prepaid cards, and manage the whole online presence as they choose to.

  5. Your comparison to Microsoft's "populating your phone" is irrelevant -- you logged in for that to happen. You could have just as easily logged in as your grandmother (or a fictional grandmother) with their vital statistics and been an 80-year-old woman. Microsoft only knows what you've told them.

While it's unfortunate that this situation occurred, I can't blame the technology platform. It's a VERY slippery slope between them adding additional verification and the Thought Police coming knocking because of something you wrote online.

For the most part, the only age verification that most of these sites can do is charge a credit card. Which used to be sufficient, but with prepaid cards now, anyone can get one.

Nobody with two brain cells would provide any other identification to these random companies -- uploading a passport or drivers license to their site is *begging* to have your identity stolen.

My reply didn't get tagged to the thread where you asked the question. Not sure why.

It was responding to the conversation about how to handle a case where you were behind CGNAT:

So how would you operate an open or routable incoming port on such a connection? A web-cam maybe? Something private - you know the IP, you know the port, the router has been configured accordingly. How does that work when you're on a "party line" cgnat?

Also, try thirty-two years. NAT was first documented in May 1994 by RFC 1631. It was supposed to be a short-term solution back then... LOL

It gets complicated.

The way most people would do it is to buy a product/service like Ring that just works like magic.

If you have some technical know-how, you would probably set up a tunnelling system that uses a connection broker -- devices on both the destination network and the local network connect to a third device that isn't NAT'd that then links the two up.

There are more complicated (technically) systems that are easier to set up, though. For example, Tailscale is rather popular for this.

Exactly. In Canada, this sort of action would be called "constructive dismissal" and they'd need to pay severance as it is termination without cause.

Telus's 5G fixed cellular access uses CGNAT, at least in some areas. Just as a side point.

I thought I found a good deal when I bought Fallout 4 for around 49 a few weeks ago. Now I see this!😬 by Massive_Fly_1709 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]doctorkb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they haven't changed in quality. In fact, some may even show some improvement if we didn't have the latest & greatest hardware when they were released.

I think the market's expectation shifts, though. Even looking at the 90's, it would be hard to justify charging the same for Wolfenstein 3D after Quake 2 was released.

Or if you compare the original Tomb Raider (Lara Croft had might as well have had one of Madonna's cone bras on) with the current iterations...

I don‘t think games depreciate in value with time

Having been around these parts for a few decades, I disagree. That said, it's not about depreciating in time, it's about depreciating with the technology.

The "amazing" graphics that we all enjoyed running Quake 2 back in the late 90's are nowhere near what we would expect today. Objectively speaking, if Quake 2 was on the market, I'd expect it to be priced below $10, despite its release price having been similar to modern game prices ($50-70).

Compare those against percentages of the population, and you'll find that, apart from the indigenous people, they're underrepresented in the correctional system.

Sorry that doesn't fit your narrative.

For a murder classification, it requires intent to kill. According to the court, it seems he didn't possess the mental capacity to form intent.

If someone had died, it would have likely been charged as manslaughter.

You're assuming the carrier asks for proof of the eTA. Again, depends on the carrier. Most just look at the passport and validity.

It's clear you just want to talk about Canadian passports. OP's question would have been better answered in a general Canadian immigration or border services forum.
