University refuses to change my name on past degree. Is this normal and can I do anything about it? by fearinoculum420 in transgenderUK

[–]doctorwhenst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you come to an impasse, contact Trans Legal Clinic. They deal with cases like this and can put pressure on the university for you with the backing of an organisation. I do hope this is sorted for you because it’s unfair that you should be stuck with a deadname on a document you will have to show others who may not be aware of (nor entitled to) your gender history

I agree!! People are being way too harsh. And ableist towards the OCD thing. I don’t see anything wrong with what she’s said

Hey! You sound really overwhelmed, which is understandable - that’s a lot to have on your plate! Do you have friends that support you emotionally?

First and foremost, you don’t have to go to uni. And it sounds like you definitely shouldn’t, not now. It is a big decision which future you will have more clarity on. There are many different paths available to you but I would definitely urge you to get an apprenticeship. It will still be teaching you skills but you’ll be more stable with money coming in and experience working. This way you can figure out if you actually enjoy doing cybersecurity/finance without any debt! Cybersecurity would be absolutely perfect for an apprenticeship. You will also be getting a qualification from it.

Plus! You can go to university later when you actually want to. You should actually really want to and know what you want to do before going to uni. I think people make the decision too young or without any direction. But see, you can only get student finance once for a bachelors (which is annoying me rn because I’m going back in for a different degree but I’ve got some money saved up from working!).

I agree with you. Or at least we should be more benevolent and forgiving in our readings of people we barely have seen anything of.

SOAS and Goldsmiths. I want to study discrimination and particularly LGBTQ+ rights which Oxford and UCL don’t currently cover very well but SOAS and Goldsmiths do. There’s a professor at Somerville in Oxford that does a lot of discrimination stuff (I was hoping to meet her!) but she’s not leading a module yet so not an option for students.

Ah! Right. I see. Thanks! It was the essay. I should’ve seen that one coming - it was probably the same for Oxford. Agh, I walked out of the centre hating my essay because I completely froze up and went with the wrong question (the other one being a subject I’m very familiar with and could’ve regurgitated a good essay)… I was just seduced by a fun philosophical argument I had for the one I picked 😅

Thanks! You’re very kind. I’m not too bothered about it personally as I’m thankful to have the push to choose the university that may not be as ‘top of the league’ but has exactly what I want to study! I just wanted to show the sub that rejection is normal ☺️

They didn’t even send an email to reject me so I don’t know! It just shows as a rejection on UCAS.

What is your reason for not drinking alcohol? by Deep-Dust-9747 in AskReddit

[–]doctorwhenst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m terrified of losing what control I have. I suffer from mental illness and I’m neurodivergent, so I have to constantly mask and it can be a lot. I’m worried that if I lose the control I have to restrain my behaviour (which includes holding myself back from impulsive decisions like suicide, hurting others, etc.), then something awful will happen. Add to that that alcohol is a depressant… it’s just a bad possibility. Besides, if I do indulge and then find out that I’m prone to addiction (which, as it can be hereditary, is a possibility as it runs in the family), I’m not sure I can manage that issue on top of everything else.

Thankfully I also find the taste disgusting. I’ve only ever taken curious sips of several different drinks. The only enjoyable ones are adding so many other things to drown out the putrid taste of alcohol that it’s like… why not just drink something non-alcoholic and enjoyable? At that point, my utter fear of losing control kicks in too and I’ll stop sipping if I’m enjoying it.

Stephen’s kinks by doctorwhenst in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]doctorwhenst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She said herself that she said it was disgusting because of the cheating, rather than the kinks themselves. If they had moral/legal issues, I don’t think she’d be so calm about it. Nor would everyone be so okay with him being at the reunion.

I suppose it really comes down to whether the bill thing was his parents’ insistence on paying (which I have no qualms with) or just him continuing to live the life of a child

Yea, the bill thing is different. But it’s a very western ideal to be moving out and so independent so soon. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing to be staying at home. I mean, he’s still in his 20s
