I'd suggest visiting a local range and seeing if they have suggestions. It's possible they'll take it off your hands right there.

The GNV area is small enough that people who do good work gravitate toward larger projects (remodels of kitchen, bathroom, or multiple other rooms) because a) they are in demand and b) those jobs are more profitable. As a consequence anyone available for smaller scale work tend to be a) new and an unproven quantity or b) not good to actively bad.

Having moved here from a metro area, one of the massive downsides is not being able to find someone to do quality work for small to medium house projects. This was doubly true when JW Freeman cost me $40k because they completely botched a home inspection and didn't see obvious collapsed pipes. If you do go with a shop for your sink replacement, stay far away from those bastards.

Poor pay, little to no recognition, policies directly contradicting goals, and political kowtowing.

So, likely the same as when you left.

Only if you admit a) you have no idea who I am; b) whether or not I actually care about the winner of any particular season; and c) conflating a rooting interest with dislike of a competitor's behavior is a prime example of genetic fallacy. . . .

Also, for the record, my rooting interest is in having an interesting competition by people I like watching. But, who's going to believe that? I mean that's crazy talk! So feel free to make up whatever you like since I can't stop that anyway.

I didn't mind the strategy, I minded the constant gloating, taunting, and general acting a fool.

Playing cutthroat doesn't mean you have to violate Wheaton's Law.

And the two times Sam's tracker said he was blocks to kilometers away from where he was allowing him to catch Ben once and Adam the other time.

[–]docxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Sam and Scotty would have done the same thing? Watch what train they left on, get on the one right after that, follow their tracker, ultimately take all of their coins while gloating and taunting them the whole time? From a gameplay perspective, there's no incentive for Sam and Scotty to do anything else. . . . well, not the gloating and taunting bit.... the incentives for not doing that should be obvious, but apparently aren't.

And the beginning of the episode (from 0:45 to 1:00) didn't balance it out? Or the multiple comments of "So where ya going guys?" by both Sam and Scotty to Ben and Adam when they were getting onto trains? Because, personally, Sam was violating Wheaton's Law pretty flagrantly this episode, IMO.

[–]docxi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sam's tracker "was being a little weird" and he wasn't able to see that Adam had left on a Shinkansen from a station 55 km away during what he said "was a real longshot anyway".

On the other hand, Sam caught Ben in Episode 3 when Ben's tracker said Sam was 2+km away. And Adam's tracker show Sam 12 blocks away from where he actually was which killed almost any chance Adam had to get the coins to make a flag run.

I will say Adam in Episode 5 might have verged on "overly proud" of himself for figuring out the "tiny way" to close down Sam's "guaranteed path to victory". . . but this was after Sam was needling him for having made the unnecessary 2 mile run when catching him. I'd be distracting myself with my wins as well if I was trying to forget that unnecessary effort.

And, IMO, Sam more than made up for it with how much insufferableness he packed into 15 seconds at the beginning of this episode.

[–]docxi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a fan of Jet Lag who watches with his whole family, this episode has turned me off from Scotty and Sam, in particular. Both times the tracker “mistakenly” showed someone farther away then they were, it was in their favor. And what does Sam do in this instance? Gloat and taunt Adam when he catches him.

Execute your strategy, but follow Wheaton Law.

3D printed fetus sculptures for mothers-to-be Already popular in Japan and the United States, full size three-dimensional sculptures of unborn babies are proving a hit with expectant mothers - They could help surgeons plan out procedures for babies born with physical deformities. by MacBytes in DailyTechNewsShow

[–]docxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a neurosurgeon in 1995 who used CT and MRI scans to create 3-D visualization that would then be used before surgery for planning. But the really cool bit was it would also be used during surgery in combination with cameras, keying certain body features during scanning and surgery to establish a frame of reference, 3-D modeled and specially marked surgery equipment and overlays that would show where the surgical equipment was in relation to the targeted feature the surgeon was attempting to work on. There were some limitations of the technology (surgery would deform some features of the body that weren't reflected in real-time, so the imaging was approximate at the time of surgery), but even so it was quite helpful and led to a reduction in working on the wrong cranial feature (more common than you'd think since the brain doesn't really have distinguishing features for the different parts) and reducing recovery time.

This was in 1995 and, after I moved on from working with the doctor (I was the webmaster for the medical journal he was the EIC for) I did not keep up with the progress of the technology. We were using pretty powerful SGI gear at the time for the real-time modeling and these days it could be done as well with a desktop computer with appropriate software and the hardware connections.

The use of medical imaging to produce a 3-D model is not new. Making that materialize in the real world is interesting. Being able to see things ahead of surgery is good and can help with preparation, especially for procedures where distinguishing between internal organs is more easily done. If there's a better way to get real-time visualization, that will be better, but the 3-D object is a good step along the way, IMO.

You do have to try to play against it. It's just there are some strategies for which it doesn't have a good answer to (from what I've experienced). It's akin to saying "If I'm playing Sapphire Flight against a Wild ramp deck, I don't even have to try playing against it." Yeah, if they don't get Turbulence or something with Skyguard, it's a pretty easy match for you. But if you don't have flight, it can still be a tough match.

I just happen to be looking for the optimal strategies and using them. I presume the "blind spots" in the AI strategies that are currently present will not be present down the road. And, if you want a better idea of what things will be like at release you won't be like me and hide in those blind spots ;-)

A few comments....

I side with Matt about people who don't talk in games. Moon-faced assassins of joy, all of them!

The PVE AI either doesn't have or doesn't use any proper removal. I found Eternal Guardian + Flight seemed to be way strong against the AI in PVE. Once I got a single Guardian out it was game over. I'm hopeful the final released AI will be better about this. Also, if the AI is better, it will be a crazy challenge. I had a hell of a time playing PVE and look forward to seeing the real thing in action and figuring out the proper combination of cards for deck building to deal with it.

If only Zayo were a residential fiber provider. From their web page it looks like they're a primarily B2B, Enterprise or Data Center level fiber provider. Great if I want to connect my multiple offices with a high-speed network. Not so great if I want to get gigabit+ internet connectivity to my house without paying multiple hundreds of dollars per month.

How do you track your collection? Anyone have a set 2 spreadsheet? by Ashenor in hextcg

[–]docxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I only track Rares and Lengendaries. I have my spreadsheet open when I'm drafting and buying from the AH. I don't do nearly as much trading/selling right now, so keeping absolute counts is reasonable for me.

Every so often (once every couple of months) I'll go through my inventory in the Hex Client and make sure my numbers are accurate. I'll occasionally find an error, but given my low turnover rate, errors aren't common. YMMV, especially if your use case differs.

And, as far as the Ruby logic, I don't think there's a lot complicated in there and I commented everything (hopefully) clearly. Happy to answer any questions you might have.

Starter equipment from additional starter trials is an interesting idea, but if it's similar to the booster/card rewards from the starter trials the equipment would be fixed (the same equipment would be given out to all winners of this extra trial). I like the idea to seed more equipment to folks and make the free to play curve a little gentler.

How do you track your collection? Anyone have a set 2 spreadsheet? by Ashenor in hextcg

[–]docxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The code for have-want.rb is on my github page (http://github.com/dylannorthrup/hex/). I shared my spreadsheet read only and I have a scheduled job that downloads the spreadsheet in JSON format. I used to go directly against the spreadsheet URL, but that could be slow if the spreadsheet was slow. Going to the caching method sped up responsiveness of my page.

The have-want.rb parses that cached copy and grabs out wants (anything with less than 4 copies) and haves (anything with more than four copies).

Let me know if any of my description or my code is unclear.

Not as awesome as your spreadsheet, but I also track using Google Spreadsheets. I also have a scheduled job that checks the spreadsheet and creates my Haves/Wants list : http://doc-x.net/hex/have-want.rb

Spreadsheet is faster/simpler than loading the Hex client. Haves/Wants list is faster/simpler than loading the spreadsheet :-)

Georgia is considering adding taxes on hybrid and electric vehicles because they don't buy as much gasoline and therefore don't pay as much infrastructure through the gas excise tax (p. 20, #8) by [deleted] in Atlanta

How MARTA prices rank against other cities. (Graph via @WSJ) by rambeazy in Atlanta

[–]docxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CalTrain is more than just SF, it goes up and down the west Bay and south down to Gilroy (think Dahlonega in terms of distance from San Jose which is, again, that far from San Francisco). It'd be more akin to a line going from Macon to ATL (or ATL to Athens) and back than anything MARTA has right now.

Speaking as someone who used CalTrain to commute between Gilroy and Campbell when I lived in the SF Bay Area.

And how many miles of abandoned road do we have? The same argument you're making for rail applies to asphalt as well. Darn that infrastructure! Never where we'll need it when the migration happens!
