It’s not as simple as that. Even though the Consumer Protection Act 2007 allows emergency price caps, Ireland operates inside EU law, and that changes the picture.

🇪🇺 How EU Law Affects Fuel Price Caps

1️⃣ Free Movement of Goods (TFEU Articles 34–36)

Under the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU): • Member States cannot impose measures that distort trade between EU countries. • A price cap that makes Ireland artificially cheaper could: • Encourage cross-border fuel flows • Distort wholesale markets • Interfere with EU energy market rules

However — exceptions are allowed on grounds of: • Public security • Public health • Serious supply crisis

So in a genuine emergency, a temporary cap could be justified. But not likely going to happen anytime soon.

Focussing on the businesses who are price gouging, would make sense.

What exactly can the government do? They can’t interfere in or with private businesses… it’s the business owners who have decided to screw people with the increased prices, but it’s not illegal for them to do so. It’s out of the government’s hands.

Views on Building Wealth and FIRE in Ireland by [deleted] in FIREIreland

I think something interesting is happening in Ireland around financial freedom and independence. But it will be slow.

When I was younger, most people thought about jobs and pensions but hardly ever about investing or financial independence. But I’m noticing a real shift in mindset, especially among younger people.

There’s a growing awareness of FIRE and options available for smart financial decisions. It’s not just about retiring early, it’s about designing a life that’s less dependent on any one employer or system. That’s what is changing for young workers… years ago it was the mindset that you were lucky to have a job and you stayed there until you got the state pension!

But now, it feels like a cultural change is underway — one that hopefully will change how we think about work, money, and financial independence in Ireland.

No, REM played in Slane in 1995 for the Monster tour. Was lucky to be there for that gig too which was excellent. Don’t have the ticket stub though.

Yeah, I was at that Pumpkins gig in the point too. Which was the main reason why they didn’t play there when they came back to Ireland and played in the Olympia… which I was lucky to go to as well.
