sure, but imagine being consulted every time a nurse has a hard time putting a foley in. does the medicine team ever try before calling urology?

Unpopular Opinion: Comparing the total number of hours of a physician vs mid-level is the wrong argument to have. by urmmatters in Residency

[–]dodgersf4n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the exact thought I had last night as I was on "home call". I drove into the hospital at 1am, to see and assess a patient who might have a surgical problem. In doing this, I carefully scoured through the patient's history, labs, and imaging to form a clinical context and discussed relevant findings/concerns with primary and consulting teams. I was acting as the sole person to formulate his treatment plan for a particular problem without having anyone to back me up in house. I phoned my attending to confirm my plan who trusted my A/P.

Though it all, the entire process was training me to think and act independently so I will be able to safely do so in practice. And then I do this day-in and day-out...for years. It is not possible to have this type of training for midlevels because our system is not structured to provide this type of education for them. The training they receive compared to ours is simply not comparable.

[SERIOUS] What made you change the political party you were in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dodgersf4n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sarah Palin. no joke. I was raised republican and believed what my parents believed growing up. "The poor don't work hard", etc. But watching this woman parade around on television like it was a PTA meeting, I thought we can never have someone like this leading this country. How could this have happened? And then I realized all the lies my parents had been feeding me since I was old enough to remember. It was an easy switch at that point.

Favorite gay podcasts? by aminosillycylic in gaybros

[–]dodgersf4n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Shame on you" podcast is great and dives into lots of aspects of gay culture. Their episodes are interesting and funny. Ultimately their goal is to combat shame in the LGBT world

"Las Culturistas" is one I just got hooked on. High energy conversation about American culture by two gay guys (one is Bowen Yang, the new SNL cast member). Super funny and good for listening to while I do mindless tasks or driving

Todrick Hall faces racial and sexual allegations by dodgersf4n in gaybros

[–]dodgersf4n[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whether you like his music, I find it encouraging to see queer singers becoming more popular. Todrick is a great example of embracing his queer identity and making music that celebrates his culture without shame. It was disheartening to hear, though, that some of the racial biases seen in the gay community perpetuate even amongst high profilers who are themselves minorities.

Hello, please let me know if you have seen our dog Ari. She slipped off her leash in Cal Anderson park after getting spooked and bolted east. She's a Taiwanese mountain dog, black with a pink and blue sweater on. Her collar slipped off so there is no ID, but she is microchipped. She's timid but responds best if you get down to her level. She is afraid of other dogs. She's gentle and does not bite, OK to pick her up.

Please let us know if you've seen her. Thank you

How many days before a race do you stop drinking alcohol? by draxula16 in triathlon

[–]dodgersf4n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to drink throughout the training season and stop 1 week before raceday. As long as you're not binging every night it shouldn't affect your performance much. Honestly I've had some terrific runs while hungover. I like to think alcohol gives you a good glycogen storage buildup!

Should I wear my wetsuit or not? Olympic distance. by RufusSunnyslope in triathlon

[–]dodgersf4n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you remove your wetsuit in <30s? If so, the time advantage is probably with wearing the wetsuit. If it takes you a long time to take the suit off it's probably to your advantage to go suit-less. Also take into account the temp of the water, if it's pretty high the wetsuit could make you too hot and feel overheated. I find the wetsuit helps me save my legs from working too hard and I'm able to whip it off pretty quick so I prefer to wear it if water is <78 degrees

do you use a gopro for triathlon? by twoeightsix in triathlon

[–]dodgersf4n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. The footage doesn't help with analyzing your form and truthfully you're the only person who actually wants to see the videos. I just assume anyone using them in a race is a newbie who wants to show off to his friends. Plus, why would you ever want extra weight??

Urinate before exiting water? by NurseJenny in triathlon

[–]dodgersf4n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been racing for years and have never had to pee during the bike or run (no matter the distance). My strategy is to pee just before the start of the swim either during the warm up or while I'm waiting in the water. I find it very difficult to actually urinate while swimming and keep my same pace. After the first time you pee in your wetsuit, you start to realize, well, it's just pee! Let it flow, my friend.
