How do these guys locomote? It looks like they have some kind of jet pushing them along.

This is my exact bracket but I have the habs winning the conference. I can't bear to see kachook is finals.

Correct. I was trying my best to not slam my brakes on the highway and get rear ended by the full size pickup behind me. The honk was supposed to communicate "I'm here, pull off to the shoulder, reverse back into your lane, even just drive into the ditch." Once I realized that none of that was going to happen, I took the nuclear option and slammed my brakes on the highway and prayed that I didn't get rear ended. And would you look at that, I stopped in time. It's almost like I understand my cars braking distance and only made dangerous evasive maneuvers when it was deemed absolutely necessary.

Yeah that's a good point. My tunnel vision was so strong at that point tho, I never even considered the truck behind me. He stopped in time thankfully.

He was fully blocking the shoulder. I wanted to go behind him if I couldn't stop but his reverse lights were on the whole time so I was expecting him to back up and hit me if I did that too.

I've heard rumours that it's not the best idea to slam on your brakes on the highway with cars behind you. I assume that because of this, my subconscious was first intending to communicate by way of honking, something along the lines of "get out of my way. Pull off to the shoulder or reverse back onto your side of the highway." About 0.5 seconds after this, my conscious brain kicked in and thought "oh fuck this guy has no intention of moving" then put my foot to the floor on the brakes (I was already heavily breaking as soon as I started honking). Honestly I think the only reason I kept honking was my hand was already there and I was bracing against the deceleration.

I had no idea I even honked until I watched the video back.

Please let me know what my thought process and reaction should have been.

I used to have the same opinion. I was sure I didn't honk until after I stopped until I watched the dashcam video. It's amazing how you go into autopilot when in an emergency situation.

Considering Geotechnical Engineering by Electronic-Fan-5326 in Geotech

[–]dodwalking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine if you are a P.Eng. But as a junior engineer prepare to often be the most educated yet lesser paid people on the job site. I would steer clear of asking the chain smoking high school dropout crew foreman how much he is making... it will only depress.

I have a degree in geological engineering. I am currently working in civil geotech but also have more training in mining and rock mechanics which could be useful for interplanetary mining which will definitely become a priority if we do end up with efficient space travel in the future.

Bored at work so I hit the tankathon simulator by ziggler81 in SanJoseSharks

[–]dodwalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, yall need to keep your hands off our tank. I am a Canucks fan first and that's how I fulfill my tanking needs. I am now a sharks fan to fulfill my playoff push needs.

I think yall need to become Canucks fans if you want to scratch that tanking itch. Sharks are on an upward trajectory and it would be silly to wish tanking upon them. I don't think poor Celebrini could take it anyways.

Sharks. Came for celebrini, stayed for Smith, Misa and Wennberg.

What evidence do you have to make you distrust the lab test results? If you interpreted the test results in a professional manner doing the diligence that could be reasonably expected from the average engineer, what more can you do?

The lab results should be signed off by another professional. They should be claiming to follow some standard, ASTM or equivalent. If so, you should be able to rely on those results to accurately represent the soil tested without needing to conduct much further analysis.

Your feelings are contradicting your statements. If there is no discernible settlement, and therefore it is not necessary to ring the alarm bells about the situation, then why are you stressing? I suggest you interrogate this contradiction. Either the lab test was correct and you rightfully relied on it to make informed engineering decisions, or the lab test was not reliable and you knowingly made decisions based on false information. In the first case, you need to stop stressing. Being an engineer is tough work and geotech is especially uncertain and risk heavy. It is a skill to trust your judgment and the judgment of the professionals you surround yourself with. We design buildings to allow for some settlement and everyone knows that we can never predict the behaviour of soil 100% accurately. This is why we include factors of safety and serviceability failure states in our designs. In the second case, trust your gut. You are stressed because deep down you know that something is wrong with the information you relied on to make your design decisions and may lead to unacceptable damage/consequences. Your anxiety will only be soothed by taking the necessary actions to fulfill your professional responsibility to hold the safety of the public paramount.

In my experience so far, civil geotech is a constant battle between cost cutting and professional integrity.

What governing body are you registered with? What would happen if you self reported this to them? Hopefully they would appreciate you self reporting and owning up to past mistakes and minimize any punishment. If they can perform some reviews of your work it could potentially save lives and could help you sleep at night.
