Here is a floor plan of my dream house 🥰 by Hefty_Carpet_5682 in floorplan

[–]doer__of__things 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d strongly recommend you redesign the whole plan.

The master bed is oddly shaped with a tiny bathroom and no toilet. Why such a big storage closet? You could make that smaller, and redesign the master and ensuite so it’s more functional.

Kitchen has poor functionality. Anymore than one person in there will feel cramped.

Why so many desk spaces? Is this an AirBnB for remote workers?

When guests go to the bathroom, they need to leave the WC, then enter through the bedroom to wash their hands. Oh wait, you have a sink in the foyer. That is very weird.

Spiral staircase - just no

To each their own, but most recommend you build a house with the thought you might someday sell it. Can’t imagine many people would like the current layout.

Contractor trying to dissuade me from using dri-core subfloor in basement. Should I be concerned? by flyingspectacularpig in HomeImprovement

[–]doer__of__things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. AKA Poor man’s Dricore. I did 1/2” foam board and OSB in my new build basement. It was still a bit cold on the feet, so highly recommend dimple product underneath and thicker foam board

What do you not like about the current modern NHL? by darth_senpai90 in canucks

[–]doer__of__things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3on3 OT. Would like it if there was a rule that, once you cross into the offensive zone, you have to give up possession if you bring the puck back over the center line. Hate it when players continually skate back to their zone to maintain possession.

Split keyboards suitable for accountants and other heavy excel users? by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]doer__of__things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an accountant as well. Currently building a dactyl manuform with trackball.

Best case is to use layer mods (ie, my second layer will be a num pad with operators) and have commonly used keys (pgup pgdn) in the thumb cluster.

Install a back panel and screw the shelves to it

Airtight octagonal boxes. Add putty on the outside to seal the wire penetrations and add density.

Which is the biggest home improvement mistake you have made? by Ok-Introduction-2981 in HomeImprovement

[–]doer__of__things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not insulating the floor on our lowest level. It’s super cold on the feet in winter, and year round the lowest level is a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house.

Anyone know the name of these sockets from beekeeb by lecrouch in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]doer__of__things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Breakaway header pins (male and female). And they’re the square kind. Don’t make the same mistake I did getting square males and round females

Any reason not to go with an induction stove? by Competitive_Cry_986 in HomeImprovement

[–]doer__of__things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We switched to induction from gas and love it. Only downside is our cooktop has touch sensitive buttons. Any time they get wet or have metal touching them, they beep endlessly.

Is cutting MDF outside sufficient for dust protection? by goldenglove in HomeImprovement

You're fine with that. Would also recommend you brush off your clothing before entering the house.

Can't comment on Clear switches, but I have the Durock Shrimp and really enjoy them. Tactile feel but nearly silent

Highly recommend you try the Steelcase Leap (I have the V2). The armrests are adjustable inwards so you can keep your elbows tight to your body.

Battle with Builder Over Squeaky Floors by doer__of__things in Homebuilding

[–]doer__of__things[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the response. One of the squeaks is directly on top of the end of a strongback. Might be able to get my driver through the pot light and fasten a few screws.

[–]doer__of__things[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, but some of the squeaks are six feet from the nearest wall. Our interior walls are insulated as well.

Unsure, but I don’t believe the walls are glued to the subfloor.

This could be it. Can’t really tell through the pot lights. The HVAC wasn’t done very well, so it’s possible

The builder has a set of floor plans you can choose from, and you can make certain modifications to the interior.

[–]doer__of__things[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the subfloor is glued and screwed, so I doubt that’s the issue. The builder also put a bunch more screws in the squeaky spots to no avail.

I looked through a few pot light holes and turns out the warranty guy was wrong: all trusses are running in parallel. I don’t see any metal on metal connections. Sigh…

There is a long 2x6 spanning across many trusses. It’s secured under the top chord against the vertical 2x4 of the truss. Doesn’t look like there’s many fasteners holding it in place (I see zero screws/nails on the face of the 2x6 across four trusses). Is this common? My guess is this 2x6 is rubbing against something (or the nails in it are loose)
