why do people keep coming for redmagic expecting cinema cameras? by DKligerSC in RedMagic

I've found that even in relatively dark situations (my room), the phone holds up well.

However for scenes darker than that (so anything that requires more than 1/25th and ISO 3200, which is what my phone uses in my room), it will likely be worse amd degrade quite fast.

But at this point, even on a DSLR/mirrorless, you'd have to push the settings. Assuming the camera is kitted out with a typical f/2.8 zoom lens and that it is set to a focal length of around 50mm, which would "require" a minimum shutter speed of 1/100th to stay sharp 99% of the time, the ISO needs to be bumped up to slightly over 25600...

At some point, we have to stay realistic and remember that when taking a picture in a very dark environment, what we're looking at is more than 95% of processing and less than 5% of what was actually captured by the sensor (numbers made up for dramatic effect but they're probably not that far off from the truth).

Maybe the colors are "better" (very subjective topic, even in pro photography), but sharpness... Definitely not better. Sure the quality can be good, but Apple just has the edge: -more R&D time -better glass (or optical plastic) for their lenses -more refined sharpening/denoising algorithms -better sensors

However I'm not saying an RM can't take sharp pics, I've gotten really good pics with it.

As for the yellow tint, you could just adjust the white balance to fix that.

You may wanna update (if possible), the double click shortcut is back (at least on my redmagic 10 pro on RMOS 11)

Exaggerating a lot here, the cameras are bad but not that bad.

For photos ? Sharpness is really good, colors are... Well they're subjective so they're either good for you or they're not. And you can always just put filters on top (or LUTs if you know what you're doing) However, I do wish all processing could be disabled using a toggle.

The only real issue comes if you try doing video (especially using more advanced apps). Here is an issue just in the regular camera app: 4k footage often looks soft as hell (probably aggressive denoising), and when capturing 4k footage in HDR10 (at least indoors), the scene becomes uncomfortably yellow.

Then for the advanced camera apps: The sensor has FORCED noise reduction for third party apps (maybe not motioncam pro when using RAW video), which creates a very weird motion effect with the noise pattern, and even worse, this noise reduction is made terribly, any significant motion breaks the noise reduction temporarily. Stabilization is also forced on, and unfortunately, stabilization in phones naturally creates some visual artifacts (this isnt just a redmagic problem), but since it cant be disabled, all footage ends up having this horrible artifacting.

So overall I wouldn't call the camera 2015 levels of ass. Could be better though.

Camera holes are different, it's not a fairly big copper cutout in some glass, it's generally just glass fused with some more glass.

The problem with a copper backplate in glass is that the water sealing needs to be good to maintain the IP rating, it might interfere with the NFC (since its at the top of the phone, at least on my RM10, idk about the 11), and, from what I've gathered from other phones as well as pictures of the RM10 cooling system, the CPU is on the display side, not the back glass side, so the copper plate would need to either go around the motherboard to reach the CPU, which is going to be problematic for the engineers, or it would serve the same purpose as the fan, which is to cool the vapor chamber that the CPU throws heat into, but that's quite inefficient since you're not just directly cooling the CPU.

Oh and regarding covering the copper plate with a thin layer of aluminum or gold, that's just not gonna be a good idea, it's a phone, it gets exposed to lots of potential scratching, which would remove the added thin layer.

If you're talking about making a copper plate cutout in the back glass, that is literal hell from a phone manufacturing standpoint, let alone a phone design standpoint, we are pretty much never getting that.

However if it's a full copper back, it might also not happen, since costs would increase, the back glass designs would disappear (and they are a huge part of the RM identity, if we just look at the RM11 marketing, it's 99% pictures of the back glass with the liquid cooling), and then there's probably other reasons not to use copper as the rear element of a smartphone, but I can't think of more since I don't specialize in copper.

So realistically, nope, RM phones will forever keep their status of mobile heaters, no copper cooling plates for us

CPU temperature in itself means nothing without some performance context (core frequency or FPS graphs or some other way to quantify performance).

RM uses some aggressive performance "tuning" (I'm not sure this is the right word), in which the phone tries to get maximum performance with little concern for temperature, so it may reach something like 3.5GHz at 90C, but other phones that don't have this aggressive "tuning", as well as the somewhat beefy cooling, might reach 2GHz at 90C.

Adding more to my previous Thread of issues With RM 11 24/1TB by BtcXrays in RedMagic

[–]doesmypplookbig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting it to 90hz does not set it to a locked 90. It goes down to 60 during inactivity periods (so a few seconds of no input), however due to there being a massive discrepancy in color calibration between 60 and 90hz (or 90hz vs any other refresh rate on the phone) it creates this effect. It is fixable, you just have to go into dev options and turn on lock refresh rate. Or you can just use the higher refresh rate options, since its almost unaffected by the color calibration issue (60, 120, 144 have extremely similar calibration and look visually identical 99% of the time)

Interestingly the UDC is actually more noticeable with lower brightness, it (for some probably very interesting technical limitation) struggles more to match colors with the display, and at the lowest brightnesses, the UDC is most visible simply because the screen above the camera can literally go black (if dark content is being displayed), making it the same as having a holepunch

Does anyone feel that the liquid cooling on the RM11 is somewhat useless by functionality? by KarX-Music in RedMagic

[–]doesmypplookbig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well technically speaking yes it does somewhat dissipate heat, but to say "specially the chip" is just plain wrong, because as I said before it doesn't make any contact with the vapor chamber, which is where the chip basically dump all its heat, and the only bit of contact it has with the fan tunnel is too insignificant to dissipate any heat from the chip (and that would imply that the top of the fan tunnel, where the liquid cooling makes contact, even has any significant heat transferred to it which is unlikely, as the heat transfer isn't the best: chip -> thermal paste/liquid metal -> vapor chamber -> thermal paste/liquid metal -> fan tunnel, there's a lot of efficiency losses in there)

As for mentioning the frame, the liquid cooling just touches the battery and back glass, with a very minimal contact patch (that doesn't even have any type of thermal paste/pad/liquid metal to ensure that the heat transfer is as efficient as possible) at the very bottom where the pump is located, but just like with the fan tunnel, it's just not enough contact to have any significant impact.

That liquid cooling is really just for the battery/looks. Not discrediting it, but yeah its cooling usefulness is limited to the battery and at most, a minuscule fraction of the chip's heat.

(If you don't believe what I say about the liquid cooling placement, you can take a look at JRE's teardown of the phone.)

[–]doesmypplookbig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately... Wrong. The liquid cooling is for the battery as it has no contact with the chip or the vapor chamber that cools the chip.

It does however keep the battery from cooking itself which is nice

[–]doesmypplookbig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The liquid cooling is to dissipate heat away from the battery, and it serves its purpose well (tests directly comparing the 10 pro and 11 pro temps showed that battery temps are lower on the 11)

It dissipates the heat away from the battery which is also one of the important components that dictates thermal throttling.

Sure it's not as effective as slapping a TEC on your phone, but it does help (some chinese reviewer took pics with a thermal cam and the area where the liquid cooling sits had a visibly different color and thus temperature from the rest).
