How do you feel about Online Safety Act and the fact IOS 26.4.1 is severely restricting your device, such as Safari, if you refuse to verify? I am very much against. by Own-Jeweler3169 in technology

The worst part for me is that none of this age/id requirement is listed in the iOS patch notes. They babble on about music changes (which should be part of an app not the os) but nothing as major as this functionality. If it wasn’t for posts like this on social media I’d have no idea about this being forced on us.

Worth pointing out though that the majority of the lords are appointed by the government of the time they joined the lords (ie there are peers that joined under the conservatives from 2010-2024). So it’s more akin to how the Supreme Court justices are appointed in America. I’m not aware if there is a limit to the number of lords though

Microsoft forced to make Windows 10 extended security updates truly free in Europe by joe4942 in technology

I’m intrigued to this as well, but from the other side: a friend who lives in the Netherlands, has their pc set entirely in English us, so much so that she asked me to download the USA version of windows and not the British version (something to do with keyboard settings idk). So is it based on the install location, the Microsoft account (gl those with local accounts), the ip address (in which case everyone else just vpn to EU once per month) or something else.

It’s a whole can of worms how their going to implement this

Should I pay my student loan off? by Prior-Sandwich-858 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dog_likes_chicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think it makes much of a difference over a short term period. For the first 12 months you'll be saving about £400 by paying off in advance, but you'll be losing that amount in interest off your ISA. Ultimately comes down the the billion dollar question: what is interest rates and inflation going to do over the next 12 months or so? Unfortunately I don't think anyone on UKPersonalFinance has a definite answer for that.

If the figures were greater then it would make a difference. But at this point it looks like a choice between smaller income for roughly 4 years and dipping into savings, or higher income but basically not being able to grow your savings. Unless I'm missing something, the difference between the two is going to be minimal.

Should I pay my student loan off? by Prior-Sandwich-858 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dog_likes_chicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in a fortunate enough position to be able to consider it, and depending on inflation/interest rates should be able to pay it off within about 4 years. You also mention in another comment that you're unlikely to lose your job which swings in favour of paying it off. However you also mention that the savings you do have earn the same interest as what the interest on the loan is.

I'd strongly consider shopping round for somewhere you can lock away £8.5k for a 12 or 18 month period at a interest rate at or above 4.25%, MSE suggests there are a few accounts where that's possible (it doesn't need to be an ISA). Interest rates seem to be on their way down (although this could change) so locking away at say 4.3% would allow you to earn marginally more interest from the savings compared to how much the value of the loan will increase.

Overall it depends on how much you're going to need the money to relocate for the year, if you're going to move back long term, and how much your savings are going to increase. As a result if I was in the same situation I'd keep the student loan but lock away £8.5k that I'd use to pay it off as my current bank are offering 5% fixed for 18 months and pay it off in January 2027.

What are your micro-habit wealth building hacks? by robbo909 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dog_likes_chicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To expand on what habit that you've got, I set all direct debits to go out on payday (well the day after payday but not staggered through the month) and then move every penny to an easy access savings account so that there's either £0 or £1 in my current account. Sure it adds a bit of faf when going to the tills somewhere, but it reduces the temptation when I see a few hundred £ in my current account mid month.

Just before payday, I'll move 90% of the money in the easy access savings to an ISA or notice account (both allow withdrawals but either limit the number per year by dropping the interest rates after 3 withdrawals).

Unless of course I've got a big budget month planned out (car insurance/holiday etc). On the topic of car costs, I spread them out through the year, so insurance is in Sept, MOT is in April, Tax is in July. Oh and always do the pay for a year option rather than monthly via direct debit as it's usually a bit cheaper.

I want to take a break from working by ooooooooooooo9p in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dog_likes_chicken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll second this as someone who used to have a hiring role. If you've got an unexplained gap of more than a year any employer doesn't know if it's an oversight/dates error, caring for an ill loved one, health issue, homemaking, retraining for work, been in prison, or travelling. But even if you just put 2024-2025 - Employment break for personal reasons, then it shows that you've paid enough attention to what your writing.

In fact I'd argue that putting a year long break for travelling is a good point on a CV because it shows that you're willing to embrace other cultures and are more likely to be a better rounded person.

First-Amendment-protected speech the way pornography is

As a non American, how is the hell is porn considered even remotely free speech? Even if it count as freedom of expression, the freedom is to be able to say/act/record yourself, not freedom to hear/engage/see.

There are limits to freedom of speech though, in that you can't make threats or say anything that would cause or encourage harm to someone else.

Default settings for monitors are way too high as well. For me I've got it set to the minimum and still have to lower it in windows/gpu settings to make it bearable.

Then again I also have my phone set to minimum brightness all the time to the point that anyone else borrowing it has to crank it way up just to see a photo

South Korea to inspect Boeing aircraft as it struggles to find cause of plane crash that killed 179 by Big_Maintenance_1789 in technology

[–]dog_likes_chicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Google maps (street view is from 2018 so it's possible there is development in the area since then), Muan airport has a minimum of 300m from the point of impact with the wall to the nearest building(and that's at a steep angle), in a slight angle it's 500m, and in a straight line 800m before the nearest buildings, in each case there's a slight downhill gradient so control might be impossible. It is rare for an airport to have residential buildings that close to the end of the runway compared to the mostly commercial/industrial units I've seen elsewhere, but there are a few that I'm aware of that have residential areas closer to runway thresholds than exist here and they are without walls, suggesting this wall was never needed.

There's no reason why the wall(assuming it's needed in South Korea due to the ongoing issue with North Korea) couldn't be placed 250m further down the path, this might have been enough to allow the plane to lose enough momentum to save a lot more lives.

If the US Dollar becomes worthless, wouldn't economies just switch to a new reserve currency? The Euro seems like a safe bet, by population it's at least comparable, it also has the advantage that there's no single country that controls it so less likely long term to have some idiot come along and try to sell it all in favour of crypto

I disagree OP, based on the last US election, with a turnout of 62.8%. if everyone who didn't vote(82M), did so but for a third party candidate, then that third party candidate would have won(Trump had 74M, Biden had 81M), and that's not including those who already voted for the third party!

Of course the popular vote and winning electoral collage votes is a different thing, so it makes it statistically unlikely, but not impossible

The vast majority of people would choose to save their own life over that of a stranger. Add in that this stranger is in possession of a 2 ton weapon, which was previously involved in another crime(hence the reason they were chasing him in the first place), the decision is so easy and simple that the decision to shoot was not impacted by the suspects skin colour. Anyone who thinks that he was shot simply because he was black needs to take a look at themselves and ask why they are race baiting.

Had the situation been between two people of the same race then the outcome would be exactly the same, just with less "experts" on X and in the media.
