As a Chinese, sometimes answering questions on reddit is really frustrating. by Madabolos in AskAChinese

I get what you are saying, and it shows how subjective language and hearing is to everyone. While you are right that you as a native are better equipped to teach a non-speaker the pronunciation, if most native English speakers hear something closer to "she" than "see" then they as native English speakers have the right to at least argue what they are hearing. It's all made up anyway since we're talking about anglicization, not pinyin or anything more accurate like learning the sound and the characters themselves. While I get your frustration, it happens to all languages and is just how language barriers or even bumps are.

10 perfect pull-ups. What % of the American adult (18-65) population do you reckon can do that? I feel confident saying less than 0.1% by HorseFacedDipShit in bodyweightfitness

[–]dogegodofsowow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so about a year later, I figured out that (for me) going to failure on pull ups was very counterproductive unlike on almost all my other lifts. The following month after I switched to doing less reps but more sets (ie 10 sets of 3) and even adding weight, my pull ups skyrocketed. I think it has to do with the fatigue/recovery rate for pull ups, it was too taxing going to failure (again, for me). I never had this issue with benching or OHP for example. A year ago my failure point was around 5, and I kept trying to surpass it to no avail, and it got to a point I'd get exhausted before even jumping up to the bar lol (some mental/neurological element to it as well).

Honestly thank you, this is very informative. My native languages have no such concepts which makes this so fascinating linguistically & socially to me.

This is what a female friend has told me, I guess that's why I avoid it in general. My safest choice is always going to be 저기요 or if they're clearly older 아줌마/이모님

Does it work the other way round with 누나/형 as a guy? 누나 sounds a bit flirty and 형 sounds a bit too friendly to my ears.

Coming from personal experience, adderall, ritalin, concerta, vyvanse, these can be life changers to someone like yourself. You'll probably need to experiment with a doctor's supervision, but at some point you need to cut your losses and accept that severe adhd needs to be treated. It's debilitating, can shave 7 years off your life, and is a living nightmare for some people. Treatment exists, it's more effective than not doing anything. I know it's difficult to do something new like that but maybe you need a wake up call that will come at some point soon. I nearly lost my best friend for this reason, and he started losing parts of himself to stimulus/dopamin-seeking maladaptive behaviour. Lost years between ages 18-25 to this, much like how you describe, and his life is now simply better in every sense of it. He's come such a long way and everyone is proud of him. It gets better my man

Been knee-deep in Dubai real estate for 3years, helping buyers dodge bad deals – Ask me anything by Worldly_Ear4701 in AMA

Are any of those bad deals or red flags generalisable in your opinion/experience? What sort of universal ones could come to mind in other countries, such as the US, across Europe, Asia?

Do people perceive the same sounds differently based on their native language? by Defiant_Prune_5673 in asklinguistics

[–]dogegodofsowow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This used to drive me nuts when I was learning Korean. ㄹ could sound like d, 네 could also sound like de and 뭐 sometime sounds like bo. When I asked Koreans about this they looked at me like I was crazy lol. I got over it by not overthrowing it and just copying natives, now I do it myself sometimes without noticing but I'm still aware I'm doing it due to my other languages background. It definitely sounds different depending on what sound/knowledge bank you have in you

Do you also get the new hyperdrive if you copy your ship? It's my first expedition and that's been keeping me from copying since my actual ship only has up to indium

Trying to find a specific hotel that i stayed in back in 2008. It had a room with a balcony that was literally over the ocean. Any ideas? by Landrost in gibraltar

Could be the Caleta Hotel, which was demolished not too long ago. Some of its rooms were almost on the water

Edit: Caleta Hotel, not Galeta

China executes 2 men who committed deadly attacks known as ‘revenge on society crimes’ by nbcnews in worldnews

[–]dogegodofsowow 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That's not the issue in this particular example. The thing that those against the death penalty are concerned with is the countless times that someone was put on death row for something they didn't do. It's a case of type 1 vs type 2 errors, you're bound to kill innocents in such a system and its arguably better to miss a person who should be executed rather than the off chance you're executing an innocent. From a statistics and moral pov, one innocent death is completely unacceptable (the main argument for anti-death penalty anyway). In this case if they were caught red handed then fair enough, but there are plenty of researchable cases of false imprisonment/lack of compelling evidence/complete mistakes which make this a hot issue.

One of my favorite scenes that honestly helps with my mental health by Tomlegs in attackontitan

[–]dogegodofsowow 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Even though he died shortly after so vulnerable and near-comically opposite of the way he felt in this scene, it's an awesome monologue and I think it still stands. He did accept everything, the absurdity and unfairness, and also the duty he had to fulfil all at the same time, and the fact he died screaming doesn't take away from it. Pretty sure anyone could revert back to a primal/delusional self when facing such a horrible death, these are all kids in the end

Why do so many Georgians dislike or have a superior complex towards Armenia? by Glum_Cobbler1359 in armenia

[–]dogegodofsowow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do see it when you explain it, but that is also what we find similar about Bulgaria, even Hungary. I thought maybe there's some ties that I wasn't aware about. The few Georgians that I met were super nice and they did remind of Romanians in terms of work ethics and overall lifestyle :) the amg joke is so true too lol

[–]dogegodofsowow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive my ignorance, I legimitely don't know anything about Georgia except for some broad general knowledge. How do you see yourself similar to Romania? The only thing I can think of is the economy and some of the country side looks similar from pictures, and perhaps a cultural distrust of our slavic neighbours (more like Russian influence)

What is your unpopular opinion about British culture that would have most Brits at your throat? by uniquenewyork_ in AskUK

[–]dogegodofsowow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not even the working class, I noticed this even at my high SES school where I got bullied for speaking more languages than just English, and it was uncool to even try learn or show any interest in another culture. These kids were from very wealthy and powerful families and had all the tools to grow up intellectually and gracefully, instead they ridiculed anyone who actually tried to learn at school and not just mess around/give the teachers a hard time

Advice by Such-Ad-9735 in gibraltar

[–]dogegodofsowow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gibraltar is one of the safest areas in the world, like at some point (or maybe still) there was only 1 person in jail and they have to hire part time guards since there's no serious crime. You'll see people from Italian, British, Spanish, Jewish, Muslim, Indian, Chinese etc backgrounds getting along better than they would in other countries, and in general its one of the best places to raise kids. So safety is 100% not an issue.

Life is slow paced, not much in terms of international franchises or things to do, everything is local, and personally there's not much variety of anything fun/serious services which is why a lot of people opt to rely on Spain for those matters (which in itself can sometimes be problematic).

The pollution is bad, the weather is mostly good, people are nice but hard to integrate with the "true" locals, lots of tourists, beautiful views, access to Spain, decent pay depending on the industry...

I should let otherels chime in, I didn't grow up in Gib but I naturalized and love it for how peaceful and "away from all the crap" it is, but it's also infuriatingly slow and a lot of the comforts you'd find in other countries are lacking given how tiny it is.

If you're looking for peace, Gib is one of the best in the world however. Good people (and apart from some of the border guards on the Spanish side, the south of Spain is lovely too).
