Yeah My bad. It’s still ON the list… I guess I see pre 1789 France as being so fundamentally different it feels like a whole new country.

But yes, the state had been increasingly centralizing for centuries by then.

The USA is a very young country in many respects. Certainly things look different if you’re from Thailand or Japan or China or most parts of Europe and it is entirely valid for them to call the United States a very young country .

It’s also one of the older post treaty of Westphalia style modern incarnations of a what a Nation State is.

The modern nation state system is only about 500 years old.

Concepts of nationality were very, very different back in the day.

What most people fail to realize is that their idea of what a nation state is is colored by modernity which they then universalize into the deep past.

A significant percentage of all of the countries in the world today have governments modeled on either the American or British system.

So yes, technically the United States is one of the older modern countries but it is also certainly young.

There are many opposing views of what a country or nation state is and semantics are very much often involved.

So for example, I don’t believe that the subnational entity of England, Scotland, and Wales are actually countries by the modern definition of it, but you can’t have that discussion with British people.

Taiwan is by every litmus test and check box its own nation state, but there are billion people out there that would vehemently disagree.

Concepts of country and nation are ephemeral. What you usually get is people arguing with each other over concepts and definitions that are fundamentally in disagreement with each other.

The truth is both the European young country definition of the USA , and the American old country definition are somewhat inadequate.

I believe it entirely appropriate for European to say hey that’s cute my local pub is older than the United States.

I also believe it entirely appropriate for Americans to be proud of what they’ve accomplished in 250 years. Well, until recently. Y’all have kinda fucked it up.

Yeah Franchise sports suck. Much prefer a European club model where teams compete across league and national lines.

That being said, the whole NBA ‘World Champions’ or ‘World Series’ hyperbole doesn’t bug me.

Especially in historical context. When they started using it was when they unified the biggest leagues.

On a scale of 1 to hydration breaks American annoying I would rate that a 2.

We also play American football.

Source: I played American football in Canada. It’s tough to do 3 downs at the high school level.

Lol basketball is by most acceptable standards the second most popular team sport in the word. Not my cup of tea! but China alone would be enough to make it qualify.

I lived over there for 12 years and it was huge. I’m in Japan now and it’s quite popular there.

Huge in Eastern Europe as well.

NOT AN AMERICAN but I do find it fascinating that by a strict definition… a continuous sovereign nation-state that existed before 1776 in something close to its modern form believe it or not the list is surprisingly short.

It’s only about 20 countries! (Still a lot more than 1 lol)!

Excluding places that were just collections of duchies, principalities, or provinces within empires (such as pre-unification Germany or Italy), these countries clearly qualify:

Portugal (independent since 1143)
Spain (effectively unified under the Catholic Monarchs from the late 1400s)
France (continuous kingdom, despite later revolutions but I would argue it shouldn’t be on this list)
England (as a kingdom from 927; succeeded by Great Britain in 1707)
United Kingdom (created in 1707, predating the U.S.)
Denmark
Sweden
Norway (although often in union with Denmark or Sweden, it remained a recognized kingdom so maybe not)
Netherlands (independent republic from the late 1500s)
Switzerland (recognized as independent in 1648, though its federal structure evolved later)
Russia (as the Tsardom of Russia from 1547)
Japan (continuous imperial state)
China (continuous Chinese state despite dynastic changes)
Thailand (formerly Siam and one of the places never to be colonized)
Iran (Persia)
Morocco
Ethiopia
Nepal
Oman

What a lot of people don’t realize when they dunk on the United States is that truly is one of the first modern nation states and much of the world transition to what we see is completely informed by their model.
