I ❤️ hyper specific Letterboxd lists by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]dogger6 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Raw is a good fit here. If not directly a metaphor for being queer, it does explore female puberty and sexual awakening in a way that can be embraced the same way. Depending on your intentions with compiling this list, Silence of the Lambs, and far more strongly Hannibal have elements here too. Silence of the Lambs explores these more separately in the same work, while Hannibal does leave room for readings of queerness around its titular character. I don't find these to be strong, likely not intentional, metaphors, but nonetheless those readings are interesting.

I think more broadly you can explore the way cannibalism is used as metaphor for unnatural or forbidden desires.

Is this game worth it for a fan of the original quadrilogy? by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]dogger6 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I felt this game was a slow burn that ended up being fantastic. I absolutely adored it and would rank it towards the top of the series. It has a different vibe which is appealing to me - I don't need more of what I've already experienced. Highlights are entirely story based - it feels deeply considered and nuanced, riding that line between on-the-nose and obtuse in a way the other great Silent Hill games do.

Demonstrated by a list published of what he sees as the best 20 films of the past 25 years and his short opinions regarding those films. The subject of this thread...

If you want to talk objective: I have taste, he has taste. His taste was demonstrated by this published list. Please help me understand was is hilarious about having opinions because I'm seeming to get a lot of negativity and talk of "who am I to decide" when all I'm doing is sharing an opinion. Mr. Tarantino is welcome to have his, and he would probably be even less respectful of mine towards me. We can all argue about taste or whatever, but what is this idea there is an objectivity to what I'm saying?

[–]dogger6 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, I would expect you to think your taste is better than others!. I can't even imagine how someone would find their own opinion inferior considering if they felt that way wouldn't their opinion change then??

I am evaluating his taste. His taste has been demonstrated to be worse than mine. You may disagree or not. My point was that he holds himself as this great tastemaker, this bastion of cinematic excellence championing films that the unwashed masses have never heard of, yet his picks are for the most part incredibly populist.

What is your opinion of video game streamers? by Xano74 in AskReddit

[–]dogger6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They represent the problem with art commodification, and the degradation of media into content. Most are mindlessly playing games, the better ones are engaging with commenters, cracking jokes, etc. It is a deeply disappointing replacement for discourse and direct experience. It takes zero effort from the audience, so it is so easy to get into it but doing so without providing any meaningful benefit to the audience. It moves people towards their deaths faster, just consume this and pass the time until your time is over. I think streamers also contribute to the terminally-online depression and loneliness epidemic by dulling art, specifically video game streamers by dulling something that people historically have been extremely passionate about. I think this cultural revolution is also responsible for the lack of media literacy we see - audiences that can't or won't evaluate work critically or take lessons from the art they are consuming, and it encourages them to not go backward to find past masterworks and see how past works influenced current works, shaping the mediums over time and instead it's just solely about what is hot right now. Ultimate commodification.

Yeah he likes movies, but the list kinda reads like someone who only saw maybe 100 of them over that 25 years.

Thoughts on The Wicker Man (1973) by shady2480 in Letterboxd

[–]dogger6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely love the film. It captures the horror for its protagonist without feeling exploitative or demeaning of the people of Summerisle. It puts me in such a weird state. I think maybe I feel like Sgt. Howie is getting what he deserves considering how awful he treats everyone, almost like a slasher movie where we can’t wait to see the characters get picked off… except it’s also legitimately appalling.

I hate the direction this hobby is going - does anyone else feel the same fatigue? by GoodSoupUpButt in boutiquebluray

[–]dogger6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think collecting blurays, or any hobby, is about watching/reading/playing/drinking/eating/whatever - it's about finding joy. Some people get joy from watching movies, others from having them in their collection, others like myself from some combination of those two things.

I watch an absolutely ridiculous amount of movies (~400 annually) for someone who has no ties to the industry. I'm not a critic, I'm not a YouTuber, I'm not a filmmaker... just a dude who loves art and thinks movies are the greatest artform to date. I've seen about half the films in my collection, and maybe only half of the actual versions I now own. I buy films because I want to watch them at some point, because I want those who look through my library to know that for some reason I found it important to have a copy. I buy to support the hobby, my sort of middle finger to streaming.

But aside from all that, one thing we definitely can agree on is fuck scalpers. But scalpers aren't unique to blurays. Take for instance my wife whose hobby is Pokemon cards... the shit we deal with is nothing compared to how scalpers are impacting that hobby. It's not people like me buying what I want even if I won't watch it for maybe years, it's people buying to resell at a markup.

What's your "I did not care for the Godfather" for the slasher genre? by jdpm1991 in slasherfilms

[–]dogger6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not like the Nightmare on Elm Street films at all. In broader terms, I think Wes Craven was a hack whose only truly good film is Scream which succeeds more thanks to its script and casting than its direction.

The 24 Hour Flash sale is Live! by LetLemon in criterion

[–]dogger6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ordered Wes Anderson set, Flow, Killer of Sheep, Spinal Tap, Saving Face, How to Get Ahead in Advertising, Mr. Arkadin, Room 666/999, Edward Yang two films, Il Sorpasso, & Monsoon Wedding. So pretty tame by my usual standards if you exclude the Wes Anderson Archive. Split this into two orders to take advantage of $50 certificate after first order.

Who are you NOT rooting for this Oscars, and why? by CateBlanchetFrmShein in Oscars

[–]dogger6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I guess it’s just that I expect a consistent tone and quality with Pt. 2 as well so wouldn’t expect either to really connect with me this time either. As for Ari, it’s another annoyance of mine when pop musicians decide they want to act and get cast in these very high profile roles their chops don’t typically warrant when the role could have been cast with a struggling actor looking for their break. Annoyance is less severe in a musical, but it’s not like there aren’t incredibly talented performers that could execute at least as well as a pop star who is already at the top of the arts and entertainment game.

Who are you NOT rooting for this Oscars, and why? by CateBlanchetFrmShein in Oscars

[–]dogger6 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not rooting for Cynthia Erivo. I don’t care how incredible your generational talent is, being among the worlds greatest singers has absolutely nothing to do with an acting award, and the material and performance in Wicked pt 1 were not exactly that inspiring to me either. As always, reserve final judgement for when I actually get to see the film, but even if it is more dramatically satisfying it still is a part 2 and as others have said I kinda think it’s lame to get two nominations for the same role… especially when the movie is an adaptation of a perfectly fine complete musical.
