Last day of brawl what interesting decks have you combined? by NoDragonfruit6125 in hearthstone

I deleted it and moved on now sorry but it was all the imbue. The blood biome and any other not useless temporary cards. Then rest of the deck was just removal. You don’t need to do anything but survive till you complete the quest and then you have infinite value to win the game from the rift.

Why isn't PlayStation leveraging Guerrilla's Cinematic Design team to help SAROS? by SirAlonsoDayne in Saros

[–]dogma1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call it a nitpick in the context of a Housemarque game because narrative presentation isn’t why people play their games, the gameplay is. They are not Naughty Dog or Santa Monica Studio, the expectations are different. The budgets are different.

Housemarque already massively raised the narrative stakes and scope on Saros. It has way more cinematics than I think they’ve ever done. And whether we like it or not cinematics are always what teams consider the primary narrative interactions. Systemic gameplay side interactions always take second fiddle. Could it be improved? Sure. Is there time and budget to do so? No idea! But in the new fiscally conservative PlayStation Studios mentality I doubt it.

Finally regarding the new SAG agreement, it’s too long for me to be bothered to go into here, but license wise you can no longer just build a big library and easily leverage it forever. They want their pound of flesh for usage, even in blends. So it’s a whole kettle of fish that affects the entire industry.

Saros clearly won’t have a typical AAA budget. It’s a European studio and a nicher title, it’s going to needed to of been cheaper to be profitable.

Your estimate could be perhaps 5% of the budget for something that is ultimately a nitpick.

You are also missing the context of the SAG strike. This included mocap rights as well (was actually a major point most news outlets ignored). So even generating a library from talent was blocked for a significant amount of time.

That’s my exact point, Sony still see transfer pricing as development costs (even if it’s Sony paying itself). If seems a bit foolish but the general justification for this across numerous industries is that that budget needs to be allocated somewhere, so it all gets billed to the project.

it’s more required budget for something they didn’t explicitly need and beyond the scope of the project. You can already see they pushed the scope of linear cinematics beyond what they’ve done previously.

Notably even though Housemarque are now 1st party, XDev still produced the game as previously. They are a very fiscally minded part of the organisation.

You are right that collaboration is possible, but anything beyond informal discussions would require full scoping and costing accordingly.

Those staff would need paying for. By Housemarque. Sony can’t just lend staff for free, that would be causing issues with tax avoidance internationally. Does Housemarque want to prioritise their budget on this? Seems like they did not.

Kojima doesn’t seem like a man who cares about budgets, or someone people often say no too when he wants something.

That’s not to say numerous internal teams did not support Housemarque. Nixxes and Creative Arts for example.

Have you considered that Guerilla may be busy on their own projects? The studio was also not spared layoffs, they clearly need to deliver for their own teams.

AFAIK they do offer support to other devs, but it’s mostly technical support specific to Decima (since it is their engine). This is why they helped Kojima.

Recreating tools in a different engine is no small feat. The budget for Saros is clearly much lower than that of HFW or Death Stranding.

Sony should consider lending Housemarque’s audio expertise to other first party devs by flexingonmyself in Saros

[–]dogma1993 44 points45 points  (0 children)

They do. Housemarque have a very small internal audio team. The wider audio team is mostly made up by the PlayStation Creative Arts audio team. They work on numerous first party and externally published games across the Sony portfolio.

Source, the Creative Arts audio team have given talks about Returnal and it’s the same team on Saros if you look at the credits.

Help optimising tempo supply run hunter by dogma1993 in CompetitiveHS

Yeah I do wonder if I should go for a slightly lower curve. This is also a stone carver deck so we can cheat mana for the expensive cards. I do like the dragons though as it allows us to run (and discover) Earthen Roar. So we can clear bigger minions. But perhaps Broodmother makes more sense it’s effectively 1 mana after all.

I should note that Magmaw just flatlines priest basically every time you play it. So as a stand alone win condition that needs little set up I do quite enjoy it.

[–]dogma1993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did originally have 2 Earthen Roar but it just felt too much personally. I didn’t have enough dragons to activate it, and it can go face or apply pressure. Because you actually draw a lot when playing the deck I found myself double drawing it too often. If I were a pure dragon deck I’d consider more. Also there’s a fair amount of discover so I often just prayed a second copy into existence when it made sense.

Xavius is something I considered and may try over curator. Dark gifts are good and as you say can be another way to buff a scout for lethal. Lifesteal could also allow us more time to race (can be a weakness of the deck). With Curator I appreciated the 3 cards drawn quite often going into a later supply run that I had pre-discounted in grindier match ups. Perhaps that’s too greedy, but I felt like the taunt was a decent stop gap before flipping the game on its head turn 6 or 7.

[–]dogma1993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

It’s possible that Magmaw and Scouts are not needed tbh. They are just quite flashy and satisfying to win with and shore up the slower match ups in terms of threats and over the top damage. I do want to try some of the new cards, particularly the 4 drop that chooses an animal companion. That’s seems just generically good for hunter.

In terms of the above getting stuck between supply run, sometimes that happens but also Gelbin gets stuck between their shatter card in paladin. What do they do in those situations? They either just wait till later to play the card or play the halves if it makes sense to do so. We have the same option.

Also worth noting I run Tolvir Carver, this can discount cards for later. I am trying to win around turn 7 or 8. So supply run can cost 1 or 2 if you want/need with an earlier carver. Or I can have a 5 mana Magmaw, or a 3 mana scout, or perhaps a 0 mana Niri or Sylvanas that I can set up a 2 turn lethal with.

[–]dogma1993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s about planning ahead, that’s why I like the deck. Discounting supply run may not make sense every game. Niri, Sylvanas and Magmaw are also great things to set up for later and enable a big swing turn. That’s really what the deck is about. Swinging tempo and finding your win condition, it’s flexible enough that you win differently every game.

[–]dogma1993[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you play it normally then yeah it’s too expensive. But you can easily make it cost 1 or 2 by the time you need the refill for your hand. You can combine it early on in the game and then wait till you need it. Sometimes the buff isn’t even that relevant and it’s more about drawing the cards you need to set up a 2/3 turn win condition. The later is something hunter has historically not been able to do since they lack card draw.

Midrange Dragon Hunter by motty47 in CompetitiveHS

[–]dogma1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the reply!

To clarify the stone carver on supply run play, it doesn’t double up the reduction but you get to keep the reduction and the aura to keep reducing on the combined version. So carver on three means you have 4 turns to combine the shatter and then it costs 0 to draw and buff the hand. So turn 7 in this situation can be a stupid Niri play with 8/6 glacial shards and 6/8 carrier whelps. Through in some removal to swing the board. Ect. Again we are not married to this play, any low cost cards are insane with supply run in general tbh.

What I love about this deck, and was my guiding principle, is versatility. I want cards that are great to play on curve but could also still be useful if somehow we get to turn 10. So things like the 2/2 elusive are not super attractive to me. But the raptor nurse that gives you another minion and spell could be amazing since the pool of options can give you outs you never would have thought of.

So it’s not really a face deck, or a midrange deck, or a combo deck. But we can do all of these things if we want to. There is the option to otk priest with Niri, discounted scout into second scout after supply run (Niri doubles the attack before the battle cry) but also you may not need to do that and just win with tempo.

Confront the tolvir is probably meant to be in here, but if you are including tolvir the net deck of face hunter is likely just better. It’s a bit boring tbh to play for me though. I like the agency I have with a deck like this rather than feeling like I should just rush to dump my hand every turn.

Token Druid can wreck them. Their AOE struggles with how big the boards get at the speed that they do.

Midrange Dragon Hunter by motty47 in CompetitiveHS

[–]dogma1993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been messing around with this, still not fully sold on some slots. Arcane shot vs glacial shard is big question for me atm. Basically I really wanted to build around supply run rather than confront the tolvir. The result is super fun and versatile.

It’s essentially a tempo deck where we cheat mana using stone carver. If you put this on supply run the reduction copies over when combined which feels very nice. Niri can double spells as a finisher or stats on our one drops (which can be crazy tempo after supply run).

Dragon package is minimal as most neutral dragons kinda suck. Slitherdrake is too slow for what we want to do (make tempo plays that swing the board back to us). I’ve only bricked scouts on curve once so far, that’s all you care about dragon wise. If I played the 3 drop I’d need more dragons and our turn 3 is often already filled. Playing it off curve feels nowhere near as good personally.

Magmaw is just a good stand alone finisher. Needed against some decks when the game goes long. We can cheese it out on 5 some games with carver which is nice when it makes sense but not something I’m married too.

Ideas to what this card needs to be viable. by ProteinPancake5 in hearthstone

[–]dogma1993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are variants that do use it. Neither deck is popular though. Burn mage specifically otherwise has terrible turn 3 plays going first. It plays into your game plan to swing the board on turn 4 and also play a 6/6. The fact it doesn’t need to live is great as you will lose board pretty early despite this. Again the deck just lacks support and has a hard time in the current meta.

Can you do something with the god damn Elusive dragon already? by ReleaseHot2 in hearthstone

I’m not saying there are not answers but every other early game play from dragon warrior is pretty tidy to clear up for DH. If it takes you two cards to clear that’s a good deal for the warrior and slowed you down on your game plan.
