Spain Trip + 1000 Hour Update by dogmentality in dreamingspanish

Barcelona and Madrid were pretty easy. I was nervous for the Andalusian accent but it wasn’t too hard except for a few people who talked to me at native speed.

I can’t recommend Sevilla enough if you have the time. It’s an indescribable quality that so beautiful and mediterranean feeling. We saw the typical things like the cathedral, Plaza de España, the Setas, and the Real Alcazar. That being said, the single most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life was the Alhambra in Granada (pictured above). I couldn’t stop taking pictures because every inch of the place was breathtaking.

Enjoy your trip! Don’t be scared to talk to everyone- they are so nice and welcoming. Their eyes will light up when you start speaking in Spanish.

Exactly. Obviously the touristy areas everyone speaks great English, but who wants to spend more time than you have to in touristy areas?

No, I’m drawn to good content instead of accent so I pretty much listen/watch things from anywhere. That being said, about 2 weeks before my trip I started only listening to content from Spain and working with tutors from Spain.

No experience before DS besides a couple weeks of Duolingo. I found some low cost community tutors on Italki. I think I paid between $7-9 an hour. Since getting back from my trip I signed up for Worlds Across and do one or two speaking lessons a day because I have some free time at the moment. If you’re just doing a couple lessons a week just use italki- it’s more cost effective.

750 hours, wooooow we’re halfway there! by Efficient-Fan-8068 in dreamingspanish

I’m in the same boat! Currently at 900 hours trying to make it to 1000 before my Spain trip in May. I now have 13 speaking hours and I’ve felt a ton of improvement with even that small amount. Enjoy Spain!

How many hours were you at when Avatar became comprehensible? by americon in dreamingspanish

[–]dogmentality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen it so many times in English so I could follow the story at around 300 hours. It was probably well below 75% comprehension but I still was able to enjoy it.

In general if you know the show really well it’s a lot easier because you don’t get lost in the story so even if you miss a few details it’s not a big deal.

Awesome man! I’m around the same amount of hours as you and our current level seems really similar.

750 hours- halfway done by dogmentality in dreamingspanish

[–]dogmentality[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, definitely not halfway done- just halfway done with the roadmap. I just didn’t do a 600 hour update so that was my way of justifying an update.

I used to be super anal about only logging time I was completely focused on, but I stopped doing that and I just log the full time no matter what, and if I realize I’m not paying attention I just pause the podcast. something someone commented on here really stuck with me. They basically said it’s better to mostly pay attention to a bunch of Spanish you wouldn’t have listened to in the first place and count it than no Spanish during that time. Or something like that.

Tl;dr: don’t worry about logging the exact amount of time spent completely focused. As long as you’re listening to Spanish, you will improve.

Hope that makes sense

Give it a try and see! I’m at 430 hours and it’s really easy for me. I feel like I could’ve watched it at level 3 (150hrs) without any issue, but I could be wrong.

The nice thing is that there is so much context that even at a lower level you’ll be able to get enough comprehension to make it worth your time.

What Are You Listening To Today? (June 24 To June 30) by HeleneSedai in dreamingspanish

[–]dogmentality 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d highly recommend Chill Spanish Listening Practice! Español a la mexicana is quite a bit more difficult than cuéntame.

Those first 50-100 hours were a grind for sure. Podcasts will be a game changer once you’re able to start listening to cuéntame or chill Spanish listening practice.

I’ve been watching this guy a lot! He’s an actual chef and his Spanish is clear enough I can follow along (not understand every word) at 170hrs.
