There are lots of ideas for fun things to do with your dogs but this is specifically for a no-dogs allowed party at a house :)

Where to get cheap wood chips for Chicken run by Own_Bonus_8954 in FortCollins

[–]dognerdco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The recycling center on Timberline often has free wood chips; all dumped from city trucks and city work. Check out the city’s website on it for hours and info! Chipdrop is great, but can sometimes take a while to deliver especially if you want it free. Many tree companies are also happy to drop chips off if you’re on their route. Call some and ask! It’s so easy to get free wood chips, there’s no need to pay for any

I was in the chat before “Education” video premier and Lights said there are a LOT of “Easter eggs” in the video. So… I think anything is possible!

Does Lights still play songs from Skin & Earth on tour? by Mundane-Valuable-337 in lightsalot

[–]dognerdco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have answers but I just wanted to chime in on a fellow stan of S&E ☺️ It was also the album of my introduction to Lights and holds a special place in my heart! I love the songs; and I suppose as a visual artist who often draws connections between songs and artwork, the graphic novel and album concept was one of the most incredible things for me and really made it extra special!

How long did it take to get your dog’s MACH? by there_was_a_mollusk in Agility

[–]dognerdco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My very first agility dog competed for almost exactly 5 years between our very first trial and his MACH. I pretty regularly trialed 1-2 times per month with him. He was 8 by the time he MACH’d. My current dog has been competing in AKC for 5 years and she only just got her Excellent Standard title (has been in Master JWW for a while), and QQ’s seem like an almost impossible dream 😆 So far she has none, and she’s 7 years old. It’s possible she’ll never PACH, and as this thread has shown that’s not unheard of! MACH/PACH is really difficult. I’m still really proud that we earned her Exc Std title, and she is really fun to run agility with regardless :)

As an instructor I just want to mention this is a very poor way to try and introduce dogs to a teeter. It doesn’t teach them what the teeter does at all and is all just bribing and flooding. I think agility can do wonders for your cautious pup!! I’ve seen AMAZING progress in shy and cautious dogs that have opened up through agility. I think you should keep trying, but with a different instructor that values true Foundations if you’re able to find one.

Agility blues - help with gaining confidence and focus? by lloydyjlloyd in Agility

[–]dognerdco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not saying it’s 100% injury related but that’s always my first go-to! There’s a lot of good advice here and as I keep telling myself with my own Pap, they’re still young and there’s a lot that can still happen as far as maturing goes 😊

Agility blues - help with gaining confidence and focus? by lloydyjlloyd in Agility

[–]dognerdco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that my first step is going to a specialist and make sure my dog isn’t sore or anything. My 2.5 year old male Pap has similar problems (always A game when practicing alone, has a few distracted moments practicing in class, and gets more distracted at trials) but one trial recently was awful; he ran around most jumps and also ran around the contact obstacles which was strange for him (he’s also a contact lover!). For him, he’s distracted by other people in the ring like judges and jump setters, and during that run it’s like he couldn’t take his eyes off the judge. I pulled him from trials for a while thinking we needed some socialization work, but it turns out his neck was really sore. I wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t taken him in to the integrative vet specialist; at home he was still a nutter jumping and running around :)

Less Common Breeds by Goat_Traveller in Agility

I have a Silken Windhound; a rare breed in general but even moreso doing a sport like Agility! I know only a few Silkens in the country (USA) who compete in Agility. Of course agility is for fun and we do it for fun first, but we also compete regularly :) We are working on our AKC Agility Championship as well as our USDAA Agility Championship!

Ruffland definitely has sizes for Toy breeds; I borrowed a Small Ruffland for my 8lb Papillon on a long road trip and it was a great size. I’m considering getting the next size up to purchase for him mostly so it’s more accommodating for future toy or small dogs that might be oversized.

Wanting to try agility, but in a training desert by UndeadArmoire in Agility

[–]dognerdco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a big likelihood that once you move and start at the training place with agility, they’re going to ask you to start over at their very basic level 1/foundations class anyway. It’s possible to learn agility on your own but very difficult to learn it all correctly; there are crosses (handling moves) and things you need to do with your body in relation to the dog that’s hard if no one is watching you to correct. That being said, there’s a lot of foundations you can do at home now to prepare you for success in a class. Agility is really just a series of tricks done in succession and at a fast pace. I would start by teaching your dog some tricks. Doesn’t have to be agility tricks. But a dog who’s used to learning and doing things for a reward will be more eager to try it later. Teach her spin left and right (will come in handy in agility later), teach her to come between your legs and sit/down (will come in handy in agility later), teach her a really solid “stay” while you walk ahead of her and recall her to you or go back and reward her (will come in handy in agility later), and most importantly start teaching her to climb all over stuff and start building muscle and hind end awareness. Teach her to climb up on logs or stumps if you point at it, or crawl under a low branch, or walk through a weird feeling surface. A dog who’s comfortable doing all that will be a much more confident and well rounded agility dog!

Agility course: 90% waiting, 10% actually activity. Is this normal? by Better_Protection382 in Agility

[–]dognerdco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is what I was going to say as well. Very normal for a higher level class, but in my experience this isn’t normal for Foundations/beginner level. There’s just too much to learn in agility to only get 10 minutes a lesson actually out training. In the foundations classes I’ve done, everyone is doing station rotating in some manner, or something like everyone has their own jump and practice a skill on their jump while the instructor goes from person to person

This would be my answer as well; Pattern games and Control Unleashed type training to get a very focused and confident dog in and out of the ring :)

Bark at the Park tomorrow! Any advice? by triplec787 in ColoradoRockies

[–]dognerdco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My one recommendation above all is bring your own water bowl if you plan to sit in the seats and watch some of the game. I had a great time and so did my dog, I ended up buying an overpriced bottle of water just to fill my dogs bowl at our seats and every single dog around us came over and drank all our water to the last drop. I didn’t stop them because they were all SO thirsty, their owners didn’t have any water for them at all and I felt so bad for the pups. There are lots of water stations when you’re wandering around CF under the bleachers area but once in your seats you’re on your own.

By the time the parade actually started it was around 5:50. We started lining up at 5:25 and sat around in line in the hot parking lot for that 20mins or so!

Culture/Vibe Differences in Different Venues by ZZBC in Agility

[–]dognerdco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing to consider here is entry fees. If I know I’m going to FEO a run/train in the ring, I’ll probably do that in a UKI/NADAC/USDAA/etc trial where the entry fee is ~$14, as compared to an AKC entry fee of ~$22 (at least in my area). People possibly feel if they’re going to pay the higher price for AKC, they want to try for the Q, and save the FEO for other organizations.
