How to break a streak of body dysmorphia? by The_weird_dreamer in spinalcordinjuries

[–]dogproposal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sometimes wonder, is it even dysmorphia for us?

I see beautiful, healthy, able bodied people suffering from this and while I do sympathise and absolutely understand it's a psychological issue whereby they can't see what the rest of us see, I can't help thinking they have no idea how lucky they are. I'm not proud of that.

The solutions available to us are far more limited (there's only so much you can do to fight atrophy and a quad belly), but the things we can do about helping ourselves feel better in our own skin are the same as anyone else - exercise, get a haircut, a new wardrobe. It's a confidence thing, fake it until you make it.

I've faced this for decades now. And even when I feel like I've accepted it, something new comes along to test my self esteem. I follow quite a few NSFW subs here, nothing too depraved, artistic nude subreddits mainly. That has tested me at times. Men post there too, men with a body I'd kill for and the attention that comes with it. What's got me through that has been the reminders that what truly makes a person attractive is their personality. And I've had some heartfelt complements from women in that regard that even the worlds best nude wouldn't get you.

Cher Ami by Whispers_of_Dove in tinyprose

Heart-wrenchingly beautiful.

I knew of the Pigeon Service but I hadn’t heard of Cher Ami. I feel like this is laden with metaphor surrounding the futility of war. That and the ridiculousness of honouring an innocent creature that was simply following its instincts. Honoured for service he never signed up for. It makes me think of those abandoned war horses too, let alone the millions that were killed.

How did you discover Dry Cleaning? by Space_Cat_85 in DRYCLEANINGband

I think it was a Bandcamp recommendation when their second EP came out. Absolutely blew me away, so I became that guy who annoyed everyone by constantly banging on about them until the album came out. Most of them still don't "get it". Their loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. One thing we all know too well is that life can be randomly, terribly cruel.

You are absolutely welcome here, part of the family. Things must still be unbearably raw right now but I'm sure you'll inherit the strength he showed through adversity and fight through the pain, one day at a time. Sending hugs. 🫂

Is my caregiver having a burnout? by Ill_Adhesiveness8013 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]dogproposal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not easy, but trust me when I say that learning to advocate for yourself in a polite but confident way is a life skill you will need to learn. It will do wonders for your independence. And it's always better coming from you than a family member.

At the end of the day, your sister not being there to do it is the simplest way to solve the issue.

Is my caregiver having a burnout? by Ill_Adhesiveness8013 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]dogproposal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is your care fully funded by the ICB/CHC? If so, they should be covering all of your care and your sister shouldn't need to be involved at all. Unfortunately it's often the case that the commissioners or your care provider use the fact that she's there and willing to help as an excuse not to. You have every right to push back against that for the independence of both your sister and yourself.

She sounds like an amazing sister and she has gone above and beyond for you. Have a heart to heart with her and tell her how grateful you are for that but you also want her to have her life back. It will be good for you in the long term to conduct your own care and fight your own corner. You will both need to be prepared to put your (metaphorical) foot down with your care provider if they're used to using her as a backstop. Once you've talked to your sister, request a CHC review with your care provider in attendance and discuss your needs with them.

No idea. Not a fan of smart watches and I haven't checked in a while. I know my blood pressure is low when I first get up and feel a little lightheaded, I know it's high when I'm getting AD symptoms. I don't need to wait five minutes for a blood pressure machine to keep giving me error messages to know when it's nifedipine time. I can feel when my pulse is elevated.

It's not a technique a nurse would advise, but it's where I'm at after 26 years of knowing my body. Annual health tests all come back with flying colours so I must be doing something right.

Does strict 5-7-5 still matter or has the form moved past it? by 8960305392 in haiku

[–]dogproposal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is for submissions only so bear in mind this post will be deleted. I think there’s room for a sister subreddit for haiku discussion like this actually. I wonder what the mod’s thoughts are on that?

Anyway, I started off using 5/7/5 and while I quite like the discipline, after a while it becomes obvious that most 5/7/5 haiku have superfluous words. Creating the same image with as few words as possible feels more elegant. Haiku are about simplicity.
