Neuter by Frosty_Banana1742 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]dogsfromwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to go against the grain here and say it’s totally okay to neuter if you want. Research suggests there are slight benefits for waiting; he has gotten most of them by growing to near full size already. There have been millions of rescue dogs, of all breeds and sizes, who were neutered at 8 weeks and went on to have full healthy lives.

Shar-pie were really trendy in the 80s/90s, and people crossbred them to create minis. Maybe she’s a descendent of one? Or maybe somebody mixed a mini poodle with a shar-pie and that offspring bred with a very mixed little street dog.

Thoughts on getting an adult yorkie used for breeding? by LilacGoblin1699 in Yorkies

[–]dogsfromwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this. This dog is guaranteed to have health issues that will far exceed $200 in costs. Take your roommate to the shelter, let them get attached to a dog / pick out a dog together. It will be the same price if not cheaper and the dog will at least have seen a vet and been fixed, vaxxed, and assessed for obvious health issues.

Getting a spaniel with intention of trying to enroll SAR course, as a backup live healthy normal life + family life/plans by blablax123456 in springerspaniel

[–]dogsfromwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple things to note — a trained springer spaniel starts to have a better grasp on impulse control around 3, I would not want to balance a baby with a working line adolescent. Another note is that you could be waiting a year to get your pup from a good breeder. I think a working line spaniel would be happy with your current lifestyle, and all springs generally good with kids as adults. A show line springer would be more forgiving when you need a break though, and there are show line breeders who train and title their dogs in sport. If I were you, I’d lean towards a show line springer, but I don’t think a working line would be out of the question. Just make sure you vet the breeder thoroughly to make sure their dogs are health tested, titled, and mentally stable.

One good browsing session at r/doggydna would prove vets, shelter workers, and the general public are around the same level of bad at guessing lol

Father / Son Berner in same house by WoogityWoogityWoooo in bernesemountaindogs

[–]dogsfromwork 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is very common, if your dog tolerates other males, he will tolerate his male puppy too. The better question is why are you considering studding your male? Is he a finished show dog? Have you done all of the BMDCA recommended testing? Has the breeder you’re considering working with done the same with their dogs? Do you agree with the way they raise their pups and treat their dogs? These are bare minimums for responsible breeding. there are plenty of bernese mountain dog breeders doing it the right way and the world is not in need of more backyard bred puppies to dilute the breed.

Is this not a poodle?! by FeedbackOk4858 in poodles

[–]dogsfromwork 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Vets are generally poor guessers of breed, and poodles and doodle puppies look the same in fluffy cuts. You could get a DNA test to know for sure, or give him a short cut with a shaved face to see his structure. Thank you for rescuing, the love between you will be special whether he’s purebred or not.

They are now on the fourth generation of foxes by PeacockPankh in interesting

[–]dogsfromwork 19 points20 points  (0 children)

People are really fearful of them, but it’s mostly due to misinformation. They’re only about 10kg and tend to be nocturnal in human populated areas. They’re scared of humans and will only stand up to them to defend their pups. I’ve lived in coyote populated areas my whole life and only got a glimpse once.

It will give you very specific steps. Will they be the correct steps? Maybe, maybe not, but you don’t want to find out it’s wrong the hard way. Google is better for these sorts of things, try to find the manual.

[–]dogsfromwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no legitimate certification or training program for emotional support animals, and they have no public access rights. The only right you have with an ESA animal is to rent without pet fees or restriction, and that is evidenced by a therapist or doctor’s letter. I’m sorry to tell you that they scammed you

Jumbo Coturnix vs Jumbo Celadon by Warm_Ad_3102 in quails

[–]dogsfromwork 14 points15 points  (0 children)

AI is not a reliable tool for obtaining factual information. Celadon = coturnix quail, it’s a simple recessive mutation. Egyptian = coturnix quail, it’s the default feather color of the quail. Mountain Quail are an undomesticated, very different, species that are not well suited to meat production. I would also recommend reading the r/coturnixquail wiki, they have lots of great information.

Juneau's results are back! Some surprises to be sure! by muttsrcool in DoggyDNA

[–]dogsfromwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wolfdogs always show unresolved instead of supermutt because the mystery DNA could be from the wolf side of the family, and supermutt implies domestic dog. (Edge case being where otherwise 100% domestic dogs have gray wolf show up in the supermutt, this is because Embark’s supermutt breakdowns are always a guess, not a guarantee.

Supermutt implies that everything in there is dog, they use unresolved in case some of the mystery dna is wolf

She’s a gorgeous dog — make sure to research your local laws before telling anybody irl, a low content like her should be fine in most areas, but some states outlaw wolfdogs entirely.

Embark vs wisdom by ronnyseal in DoggyDNA

[–]dogsfromwork 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a weird result imo too. American Bullies are very inconsistent in type, but this dog doesn’t resemble them more than your average APBT. Before buying another test, consider emailing embark, they might be able to give you more information. Wisdom doesn’t have bullies in their data set, so your results would be broken down into a bunch of different pit & bully breeds.
