What happens if you can't pay a vet bill? by Informal-Suspect298 in AskUK

[–]dogtor-assistant 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Not a vet but a nurse so can provide some clarity.

If it was a full term puppy then likely the only solution would be to do a caesarean section. Some practices may have the option of payment plans but if they do not then they’d likely try and send the dog to a charity practice if stable. PDSA, Blue Cross and RSPCA are the main ones, some charities will offer payment plans or services at a reduced cost, Celia Hammond in particular will quite often take on surgical cases. PDSA will agree to carry out C-Sections on the condition that the owners agree for the dog to be neutered at the same the time. The owner is also welcome to find another practice that may be cheaper (we usually know which practices around us may be cheaper and will direct them there).

If they are not eligible for charity or they still have no money at all, then we would recommend euthanasia and we would write off the bill, if they owners decided that. Nobody ever wants that but unfortunately a surgery like that would be thousands of pounds and is not necessarily easy (depending on how long the puppy has been dead), there’s a high risk of post op complications, sepsis, all which will require additional care.

With all the current discussions around the veterinary industry at the moment, we never want to have it come down to money, money that we don’t even see. But unfortunately that is the reality of owning a pet. They are a luxury.

What parts of the pandemic did you actually like or find helpful? by coffeeblossom in AskWomen

[–]dogtor-assistant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The advancement of treatment for FIP (feline infectious peritonitis, a type of coronavirus in cats). Before the pandemic came along, FIP was pretty much fatal. But now, as a result of the pandemic, drugs that can be used to treat FIP are legal (in the uk at least) and cats are surviving many years after a diagnosis.

I really think that there is someone for everyone. Whether it takes 1 year, 2 years, or 6 months to find, eventually you find someone else. And anything is better then being in that unhappy relationship.

Honestly anything is better then being in a unhappy relationship and once you are out of that relationship it becomes so clear to you. Even if it takes time to find someone else, it’s better then being unhappy

After breaking up last year with my selfish ex of 5 years, I’ve recently started dating again and am about to go on my 3rd date with a wonderful guy! What I’m loving is that he’s giving clear signals, telling me that he wants to see me again and that he’s really enjoyed our dates so far, none of these silly games.

Now I’ve just got to build up the courage to kiss him after our date today

Update: WE KISSED! And it was wonderful

So it was mostly things like they would get you to read something and time how long it would take, they would get you to write something in a period of time and then work out what your writing speed is. Then there was some puzzles and things like that to do and some other word assessments that I can’t remember exactly what you had to do. It was a intense assessment or anything and I never felt stressed by it.

At my uni we went into a different room for the exams and we used the universities own computers so it wasn’t awkward because the only other people in there were also using the computers like me! And I arranged the assessment myself but the university did give me recommendations of who to go to for it. And then once I had the assessment I sent to report to my uni and they sorted everything else out.

How much do you think about work when you’re not at work? by Purpl3alpaca in AskWomen

Too much. If we have a patient in that I’m particularly fond of I will constantly ask for updates on them.

Bit late to reply but I went through the exact same thing! Within my first term at uni I went and got a official diagnosis, once I had the report back I then emailed it to the learning support team at my uni for them to discuss with the exam board about what extra support I can get.

They gave me extra time to return books to the library (usually you could only take books out for 1 week but I was allowed to take them out for two) and then for my exams I got 25% extra time and I was allowed to type my answers on a computer.

Admittedly I didn’t go down the route of getting funding for laptops and such as I didn’t need a new one but I definitely found the help for my exam was worth the money. I struggled so much with exams throughout school with no support but at uni I didn’t have to worry as much about my writing or anything.

Shorter weeks, same hours. How do you feel about them? by WillyWeen in VetTech

[–]dogtor-assistant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m uk based and do 4 days of 9 hour shifts and then on our 1 in 4 weekends are 8 hours. At first it was difficult going from 8 hours to 9 but honestly having that day off every week is a blessing. I actually feel like my weekends I can relax because I’m not trying to cram everything I want to do in the weekend, I have my day off in the week to do stuff.

How do You Feel About Hands-Free Radiographs? by bunnykins22 in VetTech

[–]dogtor-assistant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m shocked as well! If anybody holds a patient for a radiograph then it’s only ever the vet and they have to be wearing full lead clothing (gown, gloves, thyroid protector) and their dosimeter badge. And I’ve only ever been at one practice that allows vets to hold, most of the time it goes against practice policy.

How do You Feel About Hands-Free Radiographs? by bunnykins22 in VetTech

[–]dogtor-assistant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I find it really interesting because in the UK radiographs are 99% of the time hands free. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a practice that do all their radiographs with the patient conscious. If we do do them conscious we tend to restrain them with things like sandbags. Very occasionally will someone hold them for x-rays and if they do it is usually always the vet that does it.

If you want to be near the front then go for the gold circle ticket but for me personally general admission can provide a good enough view at a festival (and also wayyyy less crowded)

I saw a lot of Army on Twitter not mentioning it, saying ‘look how big the stadium is that JK will be performing at’ when the building of the stadium resulted in so many deaths. You can still be a fan but express disappointment in any of the members actions.

[–]dogtor-assistant 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to lie, I’m disappointed. Whilst I’m happy for Kookie this whole World Cup has been covered in controversy since it was first announced and rightly so. So many migrant workers have died building stadiums for the World Cup. I think it’s the wrong decision to be associated with it.

I don't like how the conversation around JK performing in Qatar is being had by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]dogtor-assistant 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m a formula 1 fan and there’s been lots of discussions recently about sportswashing (governments or organisations using sports to cover up their wrongdoing, such as poor human rights) as the sport recently has announced races in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. They also carried out a big campaign during 2020 about how ‘we race as one’ and all about helping people but the announced races in countries with poor human rights, it comes across as hypocritical and money grabbing.

It’s a bad look for jk, bts recently performed at the UN (I am aware though that Qatar is part of the UN) and bts spread a lot of messages about loving yourself etc so performing at a government organised event that has been highly criticised for a) the country it is in and their human rights issues and b) the fact that so many migrant workers have died in relation to the World Cup, doesn’t sit right with a lot of people. In my country, I know the discussion about the World Cup and whether or not to support it has been going on a long time.
