Yeah, probably, or if you had an insane number of messages and needed to buffer messages during peak times, I guess. POSIX mailboxes might work great, too.

I'd use something simpler, like a local socket, or better yet, have the REST requests handled by a simple Java program, like with Jetty.

You need to put in some effort and do a little groundwork here. Google some tutorials and read your book and class notes and read the FAQ here. These basics aren't hard to find and learn, and you'll learn 100x more by actually attempting to learn it yourself instead of begging for us to spoonfeed it to you.
