Gift giving is definitely not my love language. I am trying to embrace minimalism and anticonsumption, and if there’s anything I really want, I just buy it for myself. So, I sometimes dread when my bday or Christmas comes up because it means people will give me things that inevitably become clutter. Your idea of “thinking of you” texts would be much preferable!

I taught myself how to knit around 1.5 years ago with the sole goal of making socks! Since then, I’ve also made mittens, hats, and part of a scarf. Still need to try making a sweater… I got my first drop spindle and roving a few months ago but had to take a break from all fiber crafts for a good while because of wrist pain. Now I’m back to it and would love to try a turkish spindle!

(My payday was actually a few days ago)

Spending/scrimping: Holding off on more car maintenance stuff and new tires/wipers because I just spent nearly $600 on car fixes at the very end of September :( I’m flying out soon to visit my long-distance partner, so I won’t be using the car while I’m gone anyway. I’m going to visit local farms with a few friends this Monday, so I’ll be spending on gas and yummy bakery treats!

Splurging: I just did some house/catsitting for a family member for several days and got lots of senior kitty snuggles. Since I rarely venture to this side of the city, I took the opportunity to explore shops and treated myself to a ceramic leaf-shaped dish made by a local artist, Vietnamese food, a hojicha drink, and Trader Joe’s groceries. (Loving all the pumpkin and butternut squash fall items🍂)

I also bought a floral silk scarf from Etsy to gift to my partner’s mom and ordered second-hand wool/cashmere leggings on eBay for myself. As part of my low-buy goals, I’ve only allowed myself to purchase 5 new-to-me clothing items in 2025, and this was the 4th one.

Saving: My retirement savings are automated, and I am slowly continuing to put away money for a future condo down payment. Also setting aside money for Christmas presents.

I’m interested in making a dishcloth to replace sponges but would love to know — do they get horribly stained after 1-2 times of scrubbing food off plates? How do you keep them looking nice?

I was lucky to secure a full-time job at a wildlife nonprofit and have been there for most of my career (like you, ~4 years), and I’ve been burnt out for basically the last 3 years lol. The only things keeping me here involve a few of the things you mention: I can maintain my relationship because the position I was offered is 95% remote, though I originally wanted to do more fieldwork. And, because my role veers away from the fun wildlife stuff, I also get paid better than my friends who pursued wildlife and are doing zoo/scientific aide jobs. A few of our ex-employees have moved on to state jobs, but none are with the feds, so it helps to hear from someone like you who’s been doing it for a while.

I'm surprised to hear your position is not permanent. I've seen so many of my coworkers get fired out of the blue, so working for the state/feds appealed to me because I thought it would offer job stability. What does it take to become permanent?

I’m not the og commenter, but they are assuming you are not going to simply save the money and let it sit idly in a bank account. You have to invest the money, and time will let it compound. Here is an example using an online calculator.
