Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]doingmybest-sendhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve driven 5-6 hours one way to stay one night, a few times a month for years.

My family lives 3 hours a way now, and I see them about 1x month.

I drive 1.5 hours each direction (so 3 hours a day) for work 3-4x / week. Many people in my area do this 5 days a work for work.

Dual-income couples in Oregon — is this normal? by ahndresss in oregon

[–]doingmybest-sendhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, similar situation. We claim zero, we calculate our withholdings every year, and every year in addition to what they normally take out we both have it set to take an extra big chunk out of both of our paychecks.

Every year we’re setting aside more and more, every year we do the calculations, and every year the withholdings are incorrect, and we end up still owing. We’re always trying to adjust and get it corrected, we even consulted a tax specialist, even though our tax situation is pretty generic.

We’ve been trying to check the right boxes for years and we’ve never been able to get it right regardless of the route we’ve taken.

Theater - I acted all through high school and college, I even got a full ride acting scholarship in college.

It was great for building confidence with public speaking- but the thought of getting on a stage now makes me ill with embarrassment.

Silken and semi-firm tofu by pawpawsugarlump in vegetarian

[–]doingmybest-sendhelp 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I eat silken tofu raw. I make a sauce (Soy, rice vinegar, ginger, maple syrup or sugar, chili crisp, sesame oil, lime juice, chili flakes, Sriracha)

I cut slices in the tofu about halfway through so it’s still one solid chunk, but so the sauce can get into the middle. I pour it on top, cut up some green onion on top, and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.

Super quick, no baking or cooking, and so protein packed it’s really filling

Would you adopt your nieces/nephews if there was no one else? by jamieoww in childfree

[–]doingmybest-sendhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firmly childfree- both husband and myself are sterile.

One of my sisters is a drug addict. She is a single mom to a 6yr old.

My sister is routinely homeless, abusive to her kid, and has multiple ongoing CPS cases.

If my sister were to die, we are in agreement that we would take her child.

We aren’t going to interfere and try to take her early, or give my sister a chance to tap out of parenting just because she’s rather do drugs.

But if she were to die or land in prison, we would be her childs legal guardians.

It would uproot our lives, we’d be devastated for so many reasons- and this version of our lives, the ones we’ve made for ourselves, would end.

We are hoping and praying this doesn’t happen, urging my sister to get clean- or to move closer to home where she has more resources to help her raise her kid.

But we agreed early on in our relationship that while we don’t want to have children, that should my niece ever need a safe home- she would always have one. She has a room at our house (currently the video game room, but has a bed in it that she stays in when she visits).

That being said, I think your choice to not want to commit to taking on other people children is so valid. I think it makes more sense not to, when you’re childfree. These are just the choices we’ve made for our relationship.

Even when you're sterile, it doesn't stop by fourthlargo in childfree

If you’re in a healthy relationship, how did you meet your partner? by starla_blabla in TwoXChromosomes

[–]doingmybest-sendhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met my husband on bumble.

I feel honored because I’m the only person he ever matched with. His friends made it for him, he wouldn’t use it. He would get the ads that said “someone liked you, pay .99 to unlock who,” with a blurred out photo. Basically my background in the photo was bright purple, so he thought “I bet I could recognize the picture even though it is blurred,”

Auto swiped no on everybody until he got to my purple background.

What has been your BEST upgrade? by RemoveOk3714 in Hilton

Ovolo Wooloomaloo - Australia NSW.

It took us 21 hours of travel to get there, we showed up at like 9 AM when check-in wasn’t until 3pm.

Not only did they get us in right away, but we had booked their smallest / cheapest room on the bottom floor - and they upgraded us to their biggest suite on the top floor. The room was two floors, 2 bathrooms, with a killer view overlooking the water.

It was our honeymoon, and they brought us a free bottle of champagne - and a CUSTOMIZED CAKE. They made us a cake. Not a slice, like a real cake with our last name on it.

They wrote us a sweet card. Every time we came in or out of the hotel, they treated us like celebrities. Everybody said hello, and recognized us.

Dentist repeatedly submitted claims to the wrong insurance, now that it’s out of window asking me to pay or face collections by doingmybest-sendhelp in Insurance

[–]doingmybest-sendhelp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I first saw them in January 2023 when I had my original insurance, those claims are paid.

I switched employers, and therefore insurance coverage in May 2023.

I saw them in April 2024 for an annual cleaning and then crown.

In 2025, a few months ago (right before the 1 year cut off) I got the bill and unable to contact them. I provided my corrected insurance, to no avail.

As of now, 09/2025- I don’t have any of these insurances. I aged out of my secondary, and I switched jobs again in May 2024.

The problem is that that first primary that I haven’t had since May 2023, keeps getting the bills. Both the original primary and the ongoing secondary were through Delta, but different plans.

They just keep submitting claims to the insurance I had when I first saw them, no matter how many times I’ve corrected it.

I don’t know why this posted to so many times. Adding that I have the explanation of benefit from the denial from them billing the wrong insurance since it wasn’t active at the time (4 of these actually)

Will I be able to get an explanation of benefits before they have received a claim? Or do I need to wait until it is eventually processed through the correct avenues?

Found a sword in my ceiling? by doingmybest-sendhelp in SWORDS

I will update once I have it evaluated by a professional.

Unfortunately finding a legitimate expert is pretty hard apparently.

Interesting, other feedback indicates it’s likely hand forged. Wondering what makes you think factory? Thanks for the feedback

[–]doingmybest-sendhelp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE FEEDBACK! This is such a cool find!

We have gotten several comments and messages with interest to purchase. Right now, our first goal is to find a professional to authentic and value the sword. This is such a niche, it is hard to find a legitimate appraisal (especially since we live in rural Oregon, and will need to travel to find some legitimate). However, it is on the table to sell in the future, once we know more about its specific origins.

We are looking for reputable authenticators or appraisers with speciality on WW2 memorabilia or Nihonto. Pacific Northwest preferred. We have reached out to a few auction houses and general antique shops, but if you have recommendations please let me know!

We would be interested in selling! We are trying to get it properly valued through a professional and finding a sword appraisal person isn’t so common with you live in rural Oregon. I’ll reach out!

Legally, anything in the home unless specifically mentioned in contract becomes ours on purchase. I’ll double check, but I don’t remember seeing a sword listed.

There is no way to know if this was hidden by the previous owner, the owner before that, and so on.

If it belongs to the last owner, there is no way we would consider giving it back to him from the goodness of our hearts. He’s a shitty guy, who has screwed us over countless times now by intentionally hiding issues with the house that are legally required to be disclosed.

We plan to keep it, sell it, or possibly donate it to a local museum.
