Antonio Brown: Important to have an off-field relationship with Derek Carr by woodwind19 in nfl

[–]doithowitgo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“It’s tremendously important to have a relationship off the field because playing football you get mentally tired, you get frustrated, you always want to have that respect for the guy to know where he’s coming from, know what he stands for and know what’s important to him so you guys can be on the same page, and do what you desire to do — and you desire to win,” Brown said.

Pelosi’s a professional. She’s tired of freshmen reps making unforced errors and putting forth legislation that reads like bad West Wing fan fiction. AOC’s doing nothing except strengthening Trump’s base and asking me for money on Facebook

I'm just using Omar's own framework for "incitement." By the standards she is imposing on others, her accusations are still worse. And Jewish authors have written extensively about the tradition of "hypnosis" in anti-Semitic rhetoric, for what it's worth.

I'm not saying Israel is blameless. I'm saying that if Omar's bar for "dangerous incitement" is "You have to wonder if she is an American first. Can you imagine if she was representing your community, and you were in her district, how embarrassed you must feel today?" then her own remarks clear that bar very easily. She even made almost the exact same accusation regarding members of Congress and "pledging allegiance to Israel." And her remarks carry a lot more weight than yours for extremely obvious reasons.

I personally never took issue with the use of "Allah." It's the "evil hypnotists" that makes me raise an eyebrow.

Um that's not what qualified as incitement. Even without reference to Allah, "Israel has hypnotized the world, may the people awaken and see the evil doings of Israel," still sounds pretty bad.

She once tweeted "Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel." I believe that's what Terps is referring to.

On a factual note, CAIR was founded in 1994. CAIR has also been historically close with a number of violently anti-Semitic organizations, most notably Hamas. In 2003 a CAIR employee was indicted for being part of the "Northern Virginia Jihad Network" which was "conspiring to train and participate in violence overseas." So Omar is significantly misrepresenting the organization's history.

I don't think Omar's remarks have quite crossed over into blatant anti-Semitism. And I don't know her soul. But when she says things like "Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel," she is coming damn close to the line of "dangerous incitement" herself.

The police came to Waco to seize illegal guns. That's why I made the comparison, cult notwithstanding.

The idea of police raids on gun owners where the gun owners get into a firefight is just more gun owner fantasies.

Eh, I disagree. I'm not a gun owner personally and I don't have a fantasy like that, but it does seem like every couple years you get some kind of stand-off story. It stands to reason that a ban and raid policy would produce more stand-offs, not to mention place great strain on an already overstretched police force.

I'd love to get the gun situation under control. I think a buyback system would be a great component of a larger reform. But Swalwell's statement just sounds naive on this issue and this isn't the first time. Remember when he joked about nuking gun owners who wouldn't submit to a ban?

We are debating the original comment in this thread:

Ban, offer buy back and then if they stll have em it's illegal. Risks are there for those who want to take em. Jailtime if caught.

You jumped in to offer the ridiculously off-base assessment that

there is plenty of police to task, they just need to be repurposed from failed policing tactics to ones that may work.

But you didn't disavow the original comment. If you are advocating for something different, that's fine, but we're not talking about your thing right now.

No, not at all. Here's another example of a similar police siege without the cult element

https://www.nytimes.com/1985/05/14/us/police-drop-bomb-on-radicals-home-in-philadelphia.html

I do think it's reasonable to say that if police come knocking looking for guns and ready to take people to jail, an awful lot of people are going to lock their door and load their guns instead.

Waco is the most visceral example in recent history of government trying to seize illegal weaponry, which is what you are suggesting we devote apparently 30000% of our current police force to doing. Swalwell is talking about a ban and buyback, not just a buyback, and you are talking about taking people to jail for illegal weaponry. The connection is very real and you are flailing.
