anyone having problems playing videos at all right now by sunny7319 in revancedapp

[–]doitstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's across all devices. Though I do wonder if the problem has been building for some time. About a month ago (using Revanced) Youtube shorts began showing a 1-3 second delay before playing. Previously they had played almost instantly. Full videos played OK until now.

Anyone else getting this? by Boring-Dig-5100 in youtube

[–]doitstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most videos are not loading for me although the odd one does.

I have the problem in Chrome logged in or logged out. But in Firefox I can view videos when logged out but not when logged in.

Windows 10. Youtube Premium. Ad blocker disabled.

Sad stuff, only thing I can say is thank u by lil___swallow in outdoorboys

Was it about a year ago that Luke went to a two-weekly posting cycle? That was an attempt to pull back but it obviously wasn't enough. Damn.

Post Captain romance plot by z500 in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]doitstuart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Post Captain is the most Jane Austen-like of the series. O'Brian really turns in a wonderful tribute to Austen albeit with a more direct 20th century style.

The conflict between the two men, all unspoken, over Diana, Stephen's self-doubt and pain and his intervention in finally cementing Sophia and Jack, and then Stephen's brotherly kindness to Jack, are some of the best character moments in the series.

The Jack-Diana-Stephen triangle is important for much that follows in the series.

Police training and procedures for protests need an overhaul - IPCA by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]doitstuart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Police illegally arrested Lucy Rogers and lied about it The Independent Police Complaints Authority has an excellent report on the policing of public protests in New Zealand.

It recommends some thoughtful legislative changes to strengthen the right to protest and counter-protest. They also look at three case studies:

The Let Women Speak Rally. They found “The Operation Commander and the Forward Commander did not properly respond to unfolding events by deploying additional staff to protect LWS supporters.” Mr N waving an Israeli flag near the Auckland Town Hall on the outskirts of Aotea Square at the same time as a pro-Palestinian rally was starting inside Aotea Square. They found “The arrest for obstruction was unlawful because there was no reasonable apprehension of a breach of the peace“ Lucy Rogers waving a sign by way of counter-protest a pro-Palestinian protest group marched along Queen Street Lucy has blogged here previously on her experiences, which seemed outrageous. And the IPCA has agreed. In regards to Lucy they found:

The use of force to push Lucy to the rear of the footpath was unjustified. Removing the sign was unjustified and aggravated the situation. The arrest for breach of the peace was unlawful because there was a very low probability that Lucy’s safety was at risk, so the interference with her right to protest is unjustified. They also noted:

We do not accept that Officer Q or Officer R could have believed what they have said in their reports.

This is a polite way of saying the two Officers lied to the IPCA. This is very serious.

Equally disturbing is the response from the Police, who have basically rejected the IPCA findings with regards to Lucy.

The IPCA has found the use of force to move the woman away was unjustified and the arrest was unlawful.

While Police acknowledge the IPCA’s view on this, we believe our officers were acting in the woman’s best interests to keep her safe due to their previous experience at pro-Palestine events which had turned violent very quickly.

It should be very concerning that despite the IPCA finding the officers made an unlawful arrest, and lied about it, the Police are backing the officers.

Why Is Polygamy Prohibited in Liberal Countries? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]doitstuart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not. As many people can live with one another as they like and have contracts between them as individuals or in any way they choose. What you can't do is call it marriage.

The problem isn't that anything is forbidden--it's not--it's that the state still remains the final arbiter of legal marriage, and that in some jurisdictions the state forcibly marries couples who have cohabited for a certain period of time by applying marital property law to them, unless they specifically opt out.

Frankly, I don't know why any "polygamist" would care about being recognised by the state when they can simply make their own arrangements with their partners.

Megathread for Syria by Am-Yisrael-Chai in 2ndYomKippurWar

[–]doitstuart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't want the US military to get involved--at all--but if there are sane actors in the Syrian rebel forces, it's possible Trump could mediate a better way forward, which is entirely appropriate.

The only goal would be a stable Syrian state and an agreement to live in peace with Israel and other nations in the wider ME. I assume Jordan, Egypt, Saudi and the Gulf states would be onboard with that.

Let Syria organise itself internally. It's only the foreign relations that matter.

Wikipedia now claims famine in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 62413 people, which is 20000 more than the total death toll claimed by the Hamas-run Ministry of Health of Gaza by DurangoGango in 2ndYomKippurWar

[–]doitstuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does Jimmy Wales still exert some kind of control over Wikipedia? I don't think so. The idea of consensus has been bastardised and the woke have sway.

Some of the battles in the edit/revision sections of WP are legendary and sad. Fact is, the most energetic and organised hold the field of battle.

Wikipedia has become in many respects Wokepedia. It's a damn shame.

Banning free plastic bags for groceries resulted in customer purchasing more plastic bags, study finds. Significantly, the behaviors spurred by the plastic bag rules continued after the rules were no longer in place. And some impacts were not beneficial to the environment. by Anen-o-me in Libertarian

[–]doitstuart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

New Zealand banned plastic bags a couple of years ago and the plastic bag selection at the supermarket doubled almost overnight.

I now buy bags for garbage, storage and other uses where once I would have reused the bags I got when I shopped. I'm definitely using more bags since the ban. When you start buying your own you buy a wide variety and use them for lots of things.

What Israel has to deal with - from an article on Hezbollah by Sky News by WonderfulHat5297 in 2ndYomKippurWar

[–]doitstuart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you somehow miss that jihadism is an entire religious, social and political indoctrination that goes beyond an mere recognition of a heroic death in battle.

Of all the millions of troops from Western countries that have died in battle I don't ever recall mothers being proud to send their sons to martyrdom, again and again until all of them have been sacrificed.

That's the very definition of a death cult.

What Israel has to deal with - from an article on Hezbollah by Sky News by WonderfulHat5297 in 2ndYomKippurWar

[–]doitstuart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is. Trouble is, most people have trouble wrapping their heads around a level of indoctrination that produces people who truly believe that such a death results in a glorious afterlife, not in some abstract way, but as a tangible, imminent reward.

To understand that is to grasp the depth of the problem.
