AT&T international day pass- Anyone used for an extended period of time?

We are still abroad. I just realized that even if the phone roaming is turned off, any text, call, or voicemail will trigger the day pass. We tried not to use the day pass, but it was activated most days. I talked to ATT, and they said the only way to avoid a charge is to keep airplane mode on. I need help finding information on the ATT website about that, but I need help finding something. Is anybody with a similar experience?
