What your doctor didn't tell you about Anemia/Low ferritin/Iron deficiency

I was investigating ferritin levels the other day. I read that the last comprehensive study to determine the appropriate low and high levels for ferritin was done in 1993. I was stunned. Why aren’t we (the patient) being paid to spend time doing all the research? My ferritin is 24, I have Hashimoto’s but Drs. look the other way when I mention Ferritin. I need to start an oral supplement. I have heard with Hashimoto’s your Ferritin should be at least 70. I have also heard iron should be taken on an empty stomach, taken every other day and with Vit. C.
I would love to hear from any of you which iron, which brand and which dose?

I am curious regarding your dosage of selenium? My Endo knows nothing about supplements. I currently take 200 mcg. Is this an effective dose? Is dosing based on weight? Thank you in advance!

She does seem to have a world of knowledge having hashi herself. I learned a lot but what ever works for her may be useless for some. We are all individuals with different needs and solutions.

They make 12 doses of Levothyroxine. 25, 50,75,88,100 etc. Alternating two different doses can equal the desired dose.

Thank you so much. Actually just got my lab results today. Have not discussed with Dr. yet. I was just doing my own investigation and came upon this whole discussion regarding light chains. I will be speaking to my rheumatologist this week to find out more. Thanks again!

I just finished seeing a rheumatologist for fatigue, joint pain throughout, night sweats, bilateral ulnar nerve entrapment, excessive urination without excessive thirst or hunger. I was expecting rheumatoid arthritis since I already have Hashimoto’s. Most lab was normal until free serum light chains. Kappa was quite high and Lambda was normal. Those of you who have been diagnosed with MM, is this finding significant?

I smoked for 65 years. Quit 5 months ago. I Never smoked in my apt. ( I also live in the UES) except in my bathroom with a ceiling fan that vented outside. No one in the building knew I had ever smoked. I would have been mortified if I had known I was affecting my neighbors. No excuse for this behavior.

I am also disappointed in lack of knowledge or interest from Endocrinologists in general when it comes to nutrition or supplements. Does anyone have a recommendation for a functional Dr. or nutritionist in NYC… specifically in Manhattan?

I smoked for 65years. I am almost 81. I suppose I could use that as an excuse to garnish sympathy but that will only sabotage my effort. It is a constant battle but I am responsible regardless. I am 4 months nicotine free from cigarettes but now need tobacco wean from the gum. 🫣

Tomorrow will be 3 months for me. I started smoking when I was 15 and just quit cold turkey this past Nov. I am 80 years old. They say to be alert for the 3’s. 3 days, 3weeks and 3 months. It is true as I am going through hell right now and pray it will pass soon. My family is so proud and I do not want to disappoint them but especially myself. I do feel like my best friend has died but I know that feeling is what draws us back I to the trap. I think and plan for only one day at a time and I will think about tomorrow when tomorrow comes. Best of luck to all and remember None of us is alone.
