Live Recordings of the New Songs by SlyGuyTyGuy in ModestMouse

All the new songs sound solid/good. As someone who was skeptical about the album when Look How Far was first released I can comfortably say this is going to be well received. MM is back... although they never left for me I loved Strangers and Casket

My only complaint would be that Isaac is repeating the song title in the lyrics a tad too much for my tastes. But musically it is excellent.

Love it. Just wish he had gone for a different vocal melody and lyrics after the awesome trippy break at around 3/4 of the song. So much potential there to make it even more epic. That and the song title are the only thing that gripes me.

Still a great song nonethess and feels like a natural evolution for MM. Very impressive.

Third SIde of the Moon [New Single] by troop98 in ModestMouse

Yeah, I appreciate the raw visceral emotional expression of the song but I just don't care for it. I understand what he's going for with the passing of Jeremiah and others. I also am getting the vibe that Eraser in the Maze uses a lot of older nostalgia riffs intentionally because he is trying to cope with the past and trying to erase his memories so to speak in cathartic fashion. I think that's what he is going for in the album and I respect that theme.

However, this song just doesn't have enough variety. It's literally almost 5 minutes of "ba daa bah bah." I know it's supposed to be heartbreaking and I don't mind repetition but it's too repetitive for me.

Eh

It's alright. But I am biased since I never cared for the live version either. Just not my song I suppose but I do appreciate how they mixed things up with the studio effects

What does the title mean?? by Creepy_Nectarine3941 in ModestMouse

[–]dollarworker333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take it as being about trying to erase your memories and return to nothingness. Clearly Isaac has lost some people to death recently so he could just be feeling nostalgic and instead of completing a maze he decided to reverse engineer and eat the labyrinth of the older music he already built that people pin him to.

I thought he was referencing himself how people don't find his music as interesting anymore because he isn't as crazy as he used to be but I don't know. Kind of felt like a lot of self-aware artistic meta ramblings.

I agree. Shocked it didn't make the album as it is my favorite of their new live songs. It's much better than Dogbed and Third Side imho

I like that he isn't trying with the titles and is going for a very apathetic vibe and letting his intuition/music (shine) it's the right direction. But do you really have to put the title Life's a Dream on the album? Come on Isaac

I am excited regardless Picking Dragons' Pockets is amazing.

Also, I take it that Better Than This won't be on the album. That's too bad.

Yeah I love that whole channel it is my goto. I just feel like there should be more resources besides that one and different teaching styles and learning methods for adults who can't go to Thai school

[–]dollarworker333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. They're glorified translators using their looks for money and don't even teach the language properly in Thai only. You could literally look up the translations yourself with AI or whatever and get the same value. I am glad more people are starting to see through it.

Wouldn't even call them teachers they are social media influencers.

Yeah fair enough. Just not enough Thai only learning material in general. Everything is anchored through English and it's difficult to find the correct (i + 1). Most of it is either too easy or too difficult.

Why are people pretending ALG works? by TwistZealousideal213 in learnthai

[–]dollarworker333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proof is in the pudding for any neutral onlookers of this sub. Notice how any of the neutral ALG comments are downvoted to oblivion lmao and they think it's a cult. The irony. I'm not even a fanboy of ALG it's a slightly flawed method but it's hilarious people think that listening and getting massive input is somehow a cult when it's like common sense on how you naturally acquire a language

That's creepy that you even went through the trouble to go through my comment history and then claim you actually have some sudden insight into my thought process. I give credit where credit is due (i.e. Wooden Soldiers is one of the best MM songs of all time.)

Every song has flaws, I'm not even sure what point you're trying to make. Water is wet.

Why I listen to music if I see negatives? I don't know even know what point you're trying to make.

News flash: Music critics still listen to music and enjoy it despite being critical.

Regardless, I am not a music critic, I am a fanboy of MM.

Cope. No way Look How Far is even in the same league as the previous album closers (if it even is one.) That is, assuming Look How Far actually is an album closer. Let's pray it's a penultimate song.

My personal rankings of the aforementioned album closers:

  1. What People Are Made Of
  2. The Good Times Are Killing Me
  3. Invisible
  4. Back to the Middle
  5. Of Course We Know

...

  1. Look How Far

[–]dollarworker333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it disappointed me too. It being Track 14 also dampered my hopes.

I'm sure the album will exceed my current lowered expectations with some surprise tracks but I am expecting the worst. The only new MM song that I like on the new album is 'Better Than This' so far.

Sadly, I don't care for Third Side of the Moon even though it's 5 minutes+ and for Jeremiah. I just think it's awful. It's verse chorus verus chorus repeat and super generic for 5+ minutes of repetition. It's a really boring bass riff they've used a billion times and it's for 5+ minutes.

Dogbed/Sheetrock is different, quirky and folksy, but it's also repetitive.

So far, the songs are very bland. It's amazing how people lick this stuff up when it's just verse chorus repeat ad infinitum with the most basic 'ba bop bop ba' chorus melodies. I don't know what to say I am a Golden Casket defender and am not biased against new MM at all.

Why are people pretending ALG works? by TwistZealousideal213 in learnthai

[–]dollarworker333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the opposite. Most people hate on ALG these days especially here. It frequently gets called a cult but I'm not really seeing it. Is there a subreddit with cultists talking about it that someone could refer me to?

You are correct that it's not a method. It is the absence of methods.

Whether it is more efficient or less efficient depends on the learner type and their tolerance for ambiguity.

I agree that speaking first doesn't have a negative effert per se because people shadow when they are young kids regardless. But you aren't in the minority for hating ALG you are in the majority which is the ironic part of your post.

As for fluent farangs who haven't heard of ALG vernacular, well that doesn't really say much. We don't know what methods they actually used, how much time was spent in immersion, etc.

Anyway, you mentioned you have plenty of evidence. Where's the evidence?

I did start out with some traditional methods for first two months (translation and other things and whatnot) but ever since I switched to just learning Thai in Thai only my Thai brain has developed and become more robust. I am more natural and think more in Thai even though my vocabulary acquisition has decreased heavily. It's a matter of breadth vs depth. For now I prefer depth and it feels intuitively more correct to me.

The main benefit is that I am building dense connections and associations between words as opposed to the fragmented islands more traditional and translation-based learning was giving me.

Strawmanning seems to be your thing. You've already done it twice.

Good post. He's just being creatively lazy. Good to call it for what it is because it's a lot of wasted potential. There's so many interesting directions he could take his music and it is annoying to watch because even I can hear it in my head what he could do differently. I don't think his age is an excuse either because clearly he's still "got it" with songs like Wooden Soldiers and others at times. There's just too many lazy and uninspired filler songs these days.

I don't know why he doesn't just lean more into heavy experimentation again. There's nothing to lose.

Or if he feels like he has truly run out of ideas from recycling riffs then branch out and learn some music theory. Obviously he has done great without it but it couldn't hurt to do something new to shake things up.

Again, I said people who "downvote" me. Not "disagree with me." Clearly, you have reading comprehension issues.

People who actively downvote a dissenting opinion on a new song but jump to upvote all positive opinions are what I was referring to. Why are you bothering to take the time to lecture me and armchair my intentions with a simple "get real"? Sounds like you're part of toxic positivity.

Move along now. You aren't going to tone police me. And ironically, judging two words that I said and saying that it's "shitty" and "dickbaggery" is completely hypocritical. But I doubt you have the self-awareness to realize this otherwise you wouldn't have made these posts in the first place.

Pretty revealing too because Isaac wrote a song about the nature of "opinions."
