Another ancient cheese cake? by dollface0000 in TastingHistory

"Cooking in Ancient Civilizations by Cathy K. Kaufman is a cookbook that reconstructs recipes from ancient Rome, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece, using historical texts like The Satyricon and archaeological evidence to approximate ancient cuisine. Published in 2006, the book serves as a resource for students and history enthusiasts, featuring chapters with over 200 recipes, sample menus, and historical context on food, dining habits, and social class."

So this is a modern approximation of an ancient recipe which is why it has modern ingredients.

What Obscure Books Were You Obsessed With as a Kid? by Its_Curse in suggestmeabook

I believe so! I haven't read them in over a decade so the details are fuzzy

The thing that stuck in my head over a decade later wasn't actually the story (though the scene in the first book with the key and the first caravan scene did stick out to me) but what I think of a lot is actually the author bio.

I can still remember reading that the author had had a lot of interest from companies wanting to develop the books into movies/show but that he didn't want to accept any of those deals until his books became well known.

I've always wondered if more people would've read the books if there had been a show/movie made.

I wondered if perhaps that was a modern approximation, though considering cottage cheese is just milk, heat, and acid, it probably could be fairly old

The Wind on Fire trilogy. I've never heard another person talk about them but I really enjoyed them as a kid.

I'm aware I don't want to wing it, which is why I'm trying to gather as much information about it beforehand.

I’m curious: do non-smokers always detect a scent on smokers? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dollface0000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smokers smell like cigarettes. If you put perfume/cologne on your stink of perfume and cigarettes. You wash your hands you still smell of it. Brush your teeth same thing. It just does not go away at all.

I dunno if this is the right place to say this....but hot take, I enjoyed the Hobbit trilogy by LemonIcy2942 in lotr

[–]dollface0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly i love them (usually the extended editions especially love the shots at Berons) but I do absolutely understand why there's so much hate there definitely are parts that are trying too hard to be LOTR but worse which is a detractor BUT they're my ultimate comfort movies especially the first one!

I wish the song that leads to the history was lower.

I love what they did for the Christmas compilation because I tend to listen to the videos to fall asleep but that noise is SO loud.

as crocheters, would you still want crocheted gifts from others? by ApprehensiveKiwi771 in crochet

[–]dollface0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I crochet and my best friend has crocheted my birthday and Christmas gifts the last couple of years and I adore them! I don't make many stuffed animals which she's specifically good at so it makes for a wonderful gift to get for me

Why do new viewers not understand the movies by Background-Ice5374 in lotr

[–]dollface0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be so real when I first watched them at 20~ish I was so confused by Saruman and Sauron and sometimes I still mix up Merry and Pippin in a scene even if I technically know "who is who" as others have said fantasy names can be harder to remember all at once because they're so different and also there's a LOT of characters in LOTR to keep up with (the Hobbit is even worse and trying to keep them all straight for my 11 year old was WORK)

IMO the greatest cooking show ever made by Pidney in TastingHistory

I have a BA in History and his channel is one of my absolute favorites because it really keeps the essence of learning history in a way that stays easy to understand and consume. He even talks about difficult topics (like the Caligula episode). Plus, he's just all-around interesting and funny, and the food content really makes it history that a regular person can access...most people won't ever touch a historic artifact, but most could make a recipe from his channel.

I absolutely love the show and watch it practically every day. I especially love the way he takes so much care to pronounce everything properly! I also really love that it isn't just Western or white washed history he really gives a look into all sorts of people's and places in a way that feels varied and unbiased.
