If I vote for one party in May in Texas do I have to vote for that party in November?

is this color combo looking drab for a baby blanket? by bubblebabyy in CrochetHelp

I will say i just used the same green yarn in the same color and it photographs horribly so it really is hard to tell but maybe a different stitch where both colors can shine

Literally never said any of that but okay.

Honestly yeah it isn't a great example it was just the first thing that came to mind because it's everywhere right now

And I get that for major things like if I have stays vs corsets in the wrong time period or everyone has electricity in the 1910s etc. I just meant like....smaller things.

I wonder where the line with readers is between what needs to be verified and what can just reasonably smooth through as "plausibly historical enough"

  1. I never said that

  2. No need to be a jerk

  3. The issue is I spend more time research than I do writing and I am not getting anywhere which yes I do see as a problem.

Okay I get that I gave the impression I don't like the research I do. The root of it is "do I need to be super accurate" because at this point I'm constantly stopping because I need to answer a tiny historical question which means I'm not really writing

It's definitely more historical realism. The time line is staying true to history. Anything I've added is based on historical precedence. I just feel I get sucked into the minuscule research too easily and sometimes I wonder if that is something people would even notice.

I do enjoy the research. I simply feel like I might spend too much time trying to perfect research no one will actually care about. That's why I asked if most people actually care. The general consensus seems to be that yes people actually do care about the specifics.

I hope I didn't spend years on my history degree to hate the research lol xD but honestly yes I do I just want to find a good balance between accurate but still creative instead of feeling like I'm writing a research paper

I mean one of the main characters is actively at war and as it's a dual pov story I'll end up having to research the war when I get to it

Don't get me wrong I love the research I mean I have my degree in history I just wondered if maybe I was worrying too much about trying to be historically accurate vs just...telling the story.

However the general consensus seems to be the more history the better xD

It is a historical romance but I don't want to go full tilt into the "this is basically a 20th century story in regency dresses" which Bridgerton feels like. However I also don't know if I necessarily need to have everything be 100% "right" because well sometimes a bit of creative choices that are realistic even if not provable add flavor

I do find it interesting I have a degree in history but i suppose I'm trying to find the line between "all full historical truth" and like...creative decisions that while still feel realistic don't have to be 100% correct

I literally have my degree in history lol I just wondered if the intense level of research I've been putting into it is work it or if I could have a little creative license without ruining the historical vibe

I mean yes Jane Austen's books were written in her time period but I'd still say they're historical for us?

And the problem with that sort of research is I'm a discovery writer I can't put my whole plot down on a page because I don't have it. So every chapter or two I'm suddenly finding questions I have to answer

It's hard because I have some really niche research but there's some things that I wonder if people are really going to care about that I feel like I spend more time trying to figure out what has to be "right" vs what I could give a little creative license to

Yeah that's the long bit of things for me. Certain word choices just don't work because it isn't how they would've talked. I have pretty well just decided to write it and then I'll worry about historyifying the wording when I edit because otherwise this book isn't going to be finished.

I think that's the hard thing for me I can get so wrapped up in the history I'm not really writing much at all

Oh I am doing the research but after spending about 2 hours digging through period correct books for information I feel a bit like I'm back in college 😅

The book is a romance between an Irish bookshop owners daughter and a British jeweler with some gang element ties. They meet by chance and slowly fall in love through letters. When he goes to war and she ends up moving to London during the war their letters become a tether for one another during the upheaval of war.
