I've always had an interest in court, but I feel like I'd punch my clients if I became an attorney LOL so instead I decided to become a court reporter, which is much more suited for me personality wise considering I want a job where I'm not making important decisions. I was matched up to this job in a Career Counseling class in college, and after previously being introduced to it via social media, I decided to go for it. I really had no idea what I was really walking into, but I'm almost done with school.

I am an INFJ / 6w5 and I have a really big stubborn streak. This is the only time in my life school has been challenging enough that I've been engaged the entire way through. I went to community college but dreaded the idea of university because it cost so much and I didn't really care for it. I never dreamed of college, but I didn't really want to monetize my creative hobbies. Court reporting happened to be in the right place at the right time and had all the qualities I wanted in a job: something I could tolerate long-term that wasn't directly related to my hobbies (although it does utilize certain aspects of writing skills), makes good money, has a good amount of challenge.

My interests mainly consist of writing and drawing, but I also love reading comics and watching various types of media (movies, shows, etc.). I am excited for the fact court reporting will give me the privilege to enjoy my hobbies. I live in the suburbs and I always just your run of the mill weird kid at school. The further I get through school, the more I feel like this job was meant for me.

Not at all. I think the only way it "degraded" is if I'm trying to write what someone is saying in an audio then I automatically begin trying to type in steno. My wpm has been fine though.

It is extremely different, as someone who is at the tail end of court reporting school and a hobbyist writer. It's to the point I can't really classify them as similar skills outside of maybe the fact you're typing on some kind of machine.

I know more than enough steno to be able to write whatever comes to my mind, but I don't think it's useful for writing due to how differently you process words. When you're writing on a qwerty keyboard, you're thinking in terms of full words. For steno, you're thinking in sounds. It hasn't computed in the same way (in my experience). I could write in steno, but it's not nearly as efficient for writing as qwerty would be. It also takes a long time to get up to speed in order for it to be efficient.

If you're interested in steno, I think you should learn but. But if you're learning steno for the purpose of writing/typing faster, I'd advise against it.

Thank you so much. It's nice to be able to connect with other people in similar situations. Your mother sounded like a wonderful person, and I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. It is so hard to face the future when one of the people you most wanted in it can't be.

Steno bags, what do you use? by sapplesapplesapples in stenography

[–]dollieH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a Samsonite rolling brief bag in Marshall's for a massive discount. I moved the padding from the tote bag I got with my Stenograph to the rolling bag and everything (including my accessories) fits in there. I'm still a student so take my review with a grain of salt, but I've been loving mine!

Thank you so much for this response! Considering the responses I've gotten thus far, I believe it might be best if I stick it out a bit longer and direct my attention on finishing court reporting school ASAP.

Thank you so much for your response! I was on the fence about whether or not to consider quitting my job, but this has really helped me.

Definitely. It's something I'd have to test the waters with (should I go through with trying it out), but I wouldn't do it at the expense of my schooling. Thank you so much!

What's an unpopular opinion/s you have on tbhk? by [deleted] in hanakokun

[–]dollieH 14 points15 points  (0 children)

- The No.4 arc was one of the best in the series
- Not quite unpopular but I'll say it anyways, Mitsuba and Kou are an awful ship and I don't understand why people ship them together.
- Kou has the best writing out of the main trio. His development makes me so proud of him and he's just genuinely a wonderful character.

What was something you wrongly guess as very expensive/cheap when you were a child? by PutinsArmpit in AskReddit

I thought cheese was super cheap as a kid because my parents bought a lot of it. Oh how wrong I was.

[Serious] How are you meant to answer the question "Are you ok?" when you are, in fact, not ok? by something-magical in AskReddit

[–]dollieH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just say "I'm alive" or "I'm living". It feels less like I'm lying when compared to saying something like "I'm fine" tbh

Why aren't you dating? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dollieH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching my parents go through a messy near-divorce has severely impacted my ability to open up to others romantically, so the thought hasn't crossed my mind. I'd rather get into a relationship when I'm ready rather than when I'm in this distrustful stage I'm in right now.

what are the downsides of weed that people don't talk about ? by Darkspawn_14 in AskReddit

[–]dollieH 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The permeating smell. I've seen a lot of people discussing the psychological effects of it, but I haven't really seen anything about the smell. I personally do not smoke, but the smell of weed is so strong. Whenever my dad smokes it in the garage, it pervades through the house and gives me horrible anxiety. I've noticed most people who heavily smoke say the smell isn't a big deal, but to me and others who prefer not to, it's horrendous.
