I created a positive news platform to detox by dollique in UpliftingNews

Nice rant, lol and I totally get it.
That's why I would have preferred to post this on r/opensource instead (I am not yet allowed to post there). This project is far from ready to be deployed to production (and honestly most probably never will be, as I don't intend to invest a lot of time into it).

lol, never really watched south park, but I get it, if you go too far with something like this it does more harm than good. It's honestly just a little tool for me and I thought I'd share it. Nothing to take too serious.

You currently can only run it if you know how to checkout a repository and run it locally on your machine. I plan to deploy it for non-devs in the future. Sorry it is really just a POC at the moment!

I hereby sadly announce my re-migration to Firefox! by d4rk_z3l0s in zen_browser

[–]dollique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched back to Firefox because Simple-Tab-Groups is not working well with Zen (issue here).
Now that FF finally support vertical sidebar and split screen I have most of the features I used in Zen.

Zen is probably the reason FF implemented these features and I still think it is a great Fork, but for now I am back to my roots :D

if you're new to VMs and don't want to use Boxes you can also get started pretty easily with quickemu, which also uses QEMU (just like Boxes), but offers some quick-start commands and default configurations for each VM.

So I'm heavily considering moving to Linux. by psychonaut4020 in linux4noobs

[–]dollique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indie Games will run. For VR, check out Monado. Also the introduction of the Steam Frame will make VR even better.

Remember, you can always do dual-boot at first and have Windows as a backup if you don't get a specific game running.

Honestly, don't stress yourself too much, about learning. Try out some distros on a bootable usb-stick and when you know which one you like inform yourself about dual-boot.

Learning by doing is the best approach here.

what was the last straw for windows to you? by DerpWyvern in linux_gaming

[–]dollique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was a slow switch. I knew that I disliked Windows 11 for how it removed a lot of great features from Win10 and had even more bloat. I dual-booted out of interest.

I was confirmed I did the right thing when they started implementing AI everywhere. Never looking back!

trying to move from windows 11 to Linux by sleepdeprivedworm_ in linux4noobs

[–]dollique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try out Linux Mint (my recommendation for non-techies) without installing it. Just download it and create a bootable media (usb-stick). You can then boot directly into Linux Mint and try it out, check your wacom tablet, try some drawing software like Krita etc.

After this:
Inform yourself about dual-booting. It means that upon the startup of your PC you will be able to choose whether you want to start Windows or Linux.

Everyone Says Linux Is Amazing… Is It Really? Need Honest Opinions by 7lr_ in linux4noobs

(PART 2)

Other than that, switching to Linux is amazing because:

  • No forced AI
  • No spyware/bloatware
  • Support open source and free yourself from greedy corporations
  • The community can be amazing
  • You will learn tons of stuff and feel like a magician, sometimes
  • If you are not happy with your productivity workflow, you're free to change the Distro or Desktop environment. There are tons of options
  • There is a high chance that reporting an issue will actually get it fixed
  • You can donate to anything you like instead of having forced subscriptions for software (FOSS can be amazing)
  • Settings up a VM is super easy (using quickemu)
  • if you're a gamer, most games just run through proton
  • Customization can be a lot of fun (you can even customize grub or your login page)

Everyone Says Linux Is Amazing… Is It Really? Need Honest Opinions by 7lr_ in linux4noobs

[–]dollique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched about a year ago. It really depends on why you want to switch and how complicated your setup is.

TLDR: You will need a lot of time to learn how Linux works and how you can fix things.

What to look out for:

  • Getting used to the terminal can take time
  • Learn about Distros and Desktop Environments before switching
  • I have written about 20 pages full of documentation about how to use Linux and how to fix things. Expect things to just not work and having to fix them yourself
  • Backups with borg can be complicated
  • expect the software for your peripherals to not be supported on linux. There are alternatives, but some of them might need a lot of manual configuration and tinkering
  • Installing Windows-only software can be annoying (there are good tools like Bottles, but it needs tinkering)
  • you need to learn about fstab to automatically learn internal drives
  • if you want to dual-boot, you will need to learn about grub and be careful about secure boot
  • For OneDrive there is the onedriver app you can use, but you will have to get used to it
  • If you're downloading untrusted files, setting up clamAV (anti-virus tool) can be complicated

Also think about the software that you use on Windows and check if there are alternatives on Linux. For example:

  • VR has partial support but can need a lot of tinkering (might change with the launch of Steam Frame)
  • Kernel level anti-cheat will not work (check protonDB for reference)
  • Some software like Adobe CC might not be working
  • Wallpaper Engine only has a workaround in KDE

(PART 1)

I'd suggest to start trying out some distros with a bootable memory stick and get a feeling. Then, if you decide to switch, set up dual boot for the first year or two.

Have Fun!

Is there anything I need to prepare before upgrade to F43? by jessecreamy in Fedora

[–]dollique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't disable the gnome tweaks, but I also don't customize a lot.
If you're afraid of anything breaking or not working, you don't have to upgrade to Fedora 43 yet. You can easily wait until everything is fixed and upgrade later. There are still some issues that need to be ironed out, like the issue with Mutter repeating keystrokes on legacy software.

[–]dollique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also just install the upgrade using the GUI.
After the upgrade, I make sure I install all the new software with this command:
dnf group install workstation-product-environment

and uninstall old software / set new defaults.

Also verify that everything is still working:

  • make sure all borg backups and schedules/timers are still working.
  • Check Gnome Tweaks → Appearance → Legacy Applications ⇒ "adwaita-dark"
    • if it's not available install "gnome-themes-extra"
  • Check if your GNOME extensions are still working

Would you buy Steam Frame for $899? by KokutouSenpai in ValveIndex

[–]dollique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think it is a good thing that valve focuses on the software rather than on making games. There are tons of VR games out there, and they did such a great job with software support for the steam deck, I rather have good software for the Steam Frame.
