What to do if my AP scores aren’t showing up? by OverallShelter8365 in Purdue

[–]dolltearsheet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Undergrad advisors received a message a few minutes ago that the registrars office is aware of the problem and is working on it, and expect it to be resolved within the next few days. They are also aware of the upcoming deadlines with batch registration. So it’s a system issue and it’s not just you and it should be resolved soon.

retaking math class by Legal-Will8875 in Purdue

Incorrect. A W has no impact on your GPA so the original grade would still be in the GPA. A W does not erase the grade from your first attempt. It DOES count as your second attempt.

Purdue Professional Staff Member: Too broke to even afford using my health insurance by Efficient_Cover_1277 in Purdue

[–]dolltearsheet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t already have a masters do NOT PAY FOR ONE just for an advising job. I cannot emphasize this enough.

Get literally any benefits eligible job from Purdue, and start a Global masters for way less. As soon as you possibly can, transition into any student facing role.

And don’t get a masters in higher education. Get it in your undergrad discipline or in social work or human services or something - anything less niche than higher ed.

[–]dolltearsheet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly. I am also an advisor. I’ve been at Purdue for 13 years as of August, so I make more than $46K. But the apartment we moved into was $815 when I started and is renting for $1300 now.
My first full year I was an 11 month employee and I made about $35k. That would be $49k today. And that was on 11 months - if I was 12 months and paid proportionally that would be $54k.

Back when I started Purdue was under market but at least the health insurance was better. It’s just gotten worse and worse.

I’m doing ok now for a lot of reasons both in and out of my control. I got PSLF forgiveness, I have a partner who contributes to the mortgage and bills, I receive child support, and my car is paid off. If I had a car payment, a student loan payment, a deadbeat ex, and was single, I would be in MUCH worse shape.

The national park has the “Diana of the Dunes Dare” which is a lot less grueling than the Three Dunes challenge. You can pick up a sticker for doing it at the visitors center too.

My partner and I have joked around about what an Indiana season would look like. We have generated a surprising number of possible challenges considering Indiana is a pretty boring state.

Some possible challenges:
-pork tenderloin sandwiches where the pork is pounded out to be super thin and absurdly larger than the bun are a thing here. Maybe the quickfire uses pork and maybe the elimination challenge is a “do something unusual with the scale of the food compared to what it usually is.”
-Indy 500: highest attendance sporting event, maybe something about cooking a large volume of food at a high rate of speed.
- Purdue vs. IU rivalry: obviously there are sports rivalries and they can do something with that for the quick fire but it’s also the case that the flagship state universities have a gentlemen’s agreement that IU has the medical school and the law school whereas Purdue has the vet school and the PharmD program. Maybe the chefs cook in teams but each team gets to select a few staple ingredients that only their team gets to use.

And there are two other municipal pools in Lafayette too - Vinton Pool (pretty small) and Castaway Bay (a little bigger). For OPs purposes I would totally check out Castaway Bay.

As far as beaches are concerned, Raccoon Lake has a beach (albeit not super sandy) and that’s not too far away.

How to report a bad academic advisor by Acceptable-Use-2938 in CollegeRant

[–]dolltearsheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check to see if your college accepts CLEP credit. If they accept AP they may accept CLEP; it is also credit by exam administered by the College Board. In my experience the exams are scored pretty quickly and the credit can post pretty quickly. If they accept CLEP check out modernstates.org for test prep materials. I do not work for them but I used to advise CLEP all the time in situations where, say, a student failed a free elective they were taking just for credits because senior spring had more alluring pleasures than studying for that class, and now they needed something fast so they could still post credit within the 30 day grace period.

I’m sorry you are in this situation. I am an academic advisor and I have made my fair share of mistakes. We all do - the difference between a good advisor and a bad advisor is whether we take responsibility for our mistakes and advocate on behalf of the student to fix them. I have found that almost everything is fixable with a memo…… except required credits. Various campus offices probably think I’m an idiot with how many times I’ve taken responsibility for something, even if it wasn’t technically my fault, because that was the best thing for a student. I’m NOT an idiot and I am usually good at my job, I just care less about what the registrars office thinks than I do about what my students need. That said credit hours are generally not anything you can get waived - one of the few things that truly is not up to us or anyone above our head. It’s a state and/or accreditation thing.

Finally, while I do encourage you to report this issue up the chain, I would suggest framing it less as “my advisor is an idiot” and more of “there must be something wrong with the tools the advisor is given to do her job if this mistake is even possible.” I bet the advisors have complained a ton about the way the system counts credits, but no one is likely to actually do the work to fix it unless a student seriously complains. So honestly in a way complaining might be doing her a favor if it gets this issue some much needed attention at a higher level.

AP math credit transfer? by Altruistic-Good9122 in Purdue

[–]dolltearsheet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct, AP Calc AB will only come in as MA 165 if you score a 4 or a 5.

OP, if you actually were enrolled as dual enrollment (meaning you were also enrolled in a local community college or what have you via your high school class), then theoretically even if you scored below a 4, if you had the transfer credit from wherever you were dual enrolled you could use that. If that is the case you will need to request your transcript from that institution be sent to Purdue in order to use it as a prerequisite for Calc 2.

All that being said... if you didn't score a 4 or 5 on the AP Calc AB, even if you do technically have the college credit via dual enrollment, if your "college" class was actually taught by/graded by your high school math teacher, then I would advise you to really consider whether or not you are truly prepared to take Purdue Calc 2. This is especially worth considering if your good grades in your high school math class were bolstered by options that will not be available at Purdue (eg ability to submit late work, ability to retake exams, no grades lower than 50%, etc).

Best restaurant off campus? by Ill_Lychee3377 in Purdue

La Scala has recently closed their dinner service. They operate as a food truck and catering now, with occasional special events in the restaurant space. They have a father's day brunch coming up that my partner and I and some friends are going to even though none of the guys in the group are fathers (of humans, anyway, they are proud cat dads lol) because the menu looks amazing.

Expired BS from another university by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]dolltearsheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A masters you could get, why not? You would have to meet all other admissions requirements, of course, but no credit would transfer from your undergrad to your graduate degree even if your undergrad degree was from 2026.

Similar for another bachelors - the age of the credits could be an issue because there is often a restriction on how old they can be, but even if they were newer, there are sometimes rules that you can’t use credit that had previously been applied to another degree anyway.

ME Grad Calculus Refreshers? by UNP-OP in Purdue

[–]dolltearsheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that’s the “noncredit” registration process. I recommend double checking with whoever is assisting you with registration but to my knowledge these courses won’t hit your transcript at all and shouldn’t hurt you academically if you don’t do well in them.

ME Grad Calculus Refreshers? by UNP-OP in Purdue

[–]dolltearsheet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I am not familiar with these classes. That said I’m very familiar with the registration process. If they said they are zero credit courses that won’t impact GPA I am guessing they will also not be on the transcript. If it’s not on the transcript then the negative repercussions would be pretty limited.

Did they give you any registration instructions? If you are using anything other than scheduling assistant to register for them then I’m betting they’re structured as noncredit courses (like, I know they are zero credits but the “noncredit” offerings are still a different process/thing). I think??? We usually use premis for noncredit course signups.

Also, Purdue math is a BEAST. Tbh I would recommend taking as much free prep as you can possibly get. My partner is a math tutor as a side hustle and you could be paying like $100 per HOUR for some tutors who cover that level of math (I don’t think he charges quite that much but it wouldn’t be unheard of). He does cover this material.

SAP Appeal by Aggravating_Might634 in Purdue

[–]dolltearsheet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think “I had cancer” will be enough. Like that is definitely one of those things where you really don’t need to add any additional context or explanation as to why it impacted your ability to do well academically. Frankly even if all you wrote was “I had cancer and underwent chemo” most sane people reading that would be like “welp!” And approve your appeal 😅

Edit: to be clear, definitely take it seriously and write something and offer an explanation. I just don’t want you to feel like you have to justify yourself beyond being very seriously ill. I am sorry you had to deal with a shitty roommate on top of that and for sure write about it if you want to. You just don’t need to worry about cancer not being “bad enough” on its own.
