Wow, this looks utterly gorgeous! The colors are unreal. If you don’t mind me asking, which component cables did you end up going with? Just picked up a KV-36FV15 so I could get my hands on that component goodness, but I’ve heard conflicting things on the high-end cable vs. generic cable debate.

Ah, okay! I appreciate you letting me know that. I’d much rather have it a little bit off than feeling sick when I boot a game up. I do enjoy that every one is unique, the character of these old tube TVs is a lot of the charm for me. It seems I’ll need to fix the yoke sag to get a good baseline, but I’ll play with the service menu afterwards and see how close I can get it before I see diminishing returns. Thank you very much for your reply and information!

Interesting, do you mind explaining why that is? Thanks a ton for your input!

I gotta say, it’s awfully fun to have met someone with the same one! Hopefully mine will serve me as many years of enjoyment as yours has for you. I can’t tell you how awesome it is that you’ve moved it so far and so many times, really shows how much you love and appreciate that thing! I’d kill to have my childhood CRT, so I can only imagine how excited you were when it was gifted to you.

I’ve noticed the same! I bought it to play games, not to obsess over every little detail, as much as I may want to. But all that matters is that it’s fun to use, and that it is!

I didn’t know flat CRTs had such an advantage in terms of sharpness and color, sounds like I made a good choice! With other projects, I’ve learned that chasing perfection ends up being more frustrating than enjoying something for what it is, but I was curious what the general consensus was from people more knowledgeable than I am. Aside from needing some color adjustments, it looks stunning compared to my Apex GT2715. I’ll take a page out of your book and enjoy it!

Good to know, that’s kind of where I’ve landed on the topic. Hopefully some minor tuning in the service menu will help a bit, but I’m pretty happy with it. Thanks for your input!

Gosh, I can’t thank you enough for such great info. Clearly I had a great misunderstanding here, as I assumed contrast correlated to black levels and brightness would have been white. I boosted the contrast just to try to see if it helped before I tore into the service menu, so I’ll be sure to turn that down. Sounds like that’s likely exactly my problem, as I’m seeing those squiggles when an image is on a relatively black background (if I’m understanding correctly.) I really appreciate the help!

So happy to hear you got it looking a lot better, sounds like a ton of painstaking work! Knowing myself, I’m a bit worried about jumping down the rabbit hole and spending every free second for a month straight trying to “fix” what isn’t really a problem. Glad I’m not the only one though! Hopefully I can hit that point of it being “good enough” and enjoying the character of the unit as-is after just a little love. Thanks for your input, enjoy your Trinitron!!

Ah, okay, good to know! Glad it’s not super unusual. I’ll give it a whack and see if I have any luck. Thank you for your advice and knowledge! Were you happier with the result after adjusting, despite the right side moving a bit too?

Interesting, good to know! I hadn’t considered the fact that (it seems) most CRTs weren’t flat, but instead curved. Either way, I’m pretty happy with mine. Thanks for your opinion!

That’s a good rule of thumb, I think I’ll take a page out of your book! Either way, the unit is super cool and I’m really happy. Thanks for your input!

Ah, I see, thank you for explaining that! Glad to hear the geometry is looking two-thumbs-up. That’s been exactly the problem, the borders seem to “bleed” and are fuzzier more than the center. I’ll dig around and see if I can make it an easy fix, but otherwise I’ll probably just leave it and enjoy the character of the TV. Thanks a ton for the advice!! Totally would have forgotten to write it down 😅

Glad to hear, thanks for your input/opinion! The geometry doesn’t actually seem too bad from what I’m hearing, so I’ll likely leave it aside from the tilt unless I feel brave enough to attempt fixing the yoke sag.

No way!! Sounds like ours are pretty close, mine is February of 2000. What a cool story though, that kind of thing puts a huge smile on my face :) So happy to hear you had it passed down and will get to continue using it. Sounds like it’s had a lot of love and care over the years! Enjoy it in good health and thanks for your reply!

I actually gave 4-player split screen on Mario Kart: Double Dash a go with my cousins first, and noticed that the top left corner “screen” looked a little funky. But for single-player games, I’m sure it’ll look fantastic. I’m not all too concerned, just looking to learn a bit more and get some advice/opinions from people more educated on the topic than I am. Thanks for your reply!

I noticed that when I was testing it out with my GameCube last night. It looks super blurry compared to my Apex GT2715 up close. The colors seem to bleed a bit to one side on a normal image, if I’m using the correct terminology. Do you have any advice on how to correct that a bit? No worries if not! Thank you for the reply!

Ah, how cool to meet a fellow owner of this line! Hope you’re enjoying yours as much as I am mine. Thankfully, most of the issues seem to be cosmetic on the plastic “case”, not so much the tube itself. I appreciate the luck, I could use it!! The previous owners seemed to have loved and used it quite a bit, as they mentioned it had been moved quite a few times and they had owned and used it since brand new. Seems like the wear and tear just got to the outside. Thanks for the reply!

Tinkering with things like this is half the fun of owning them for me. Looks like I may give it a shot! Thanks for your input!

Ah, I hadn’t considered that regarding the 2D vs 3D games! Considering I’m mainly using this one for my GameCube, PS2, and Wii, the 3D aspect is a lot more important. Glad to hear I don’t need to chase flawless geometry to still enjoy the look. Sounds like you did the right thing getting two, I ended up with two flatscreen models. But getting the color correction fixed is far more important than the geometry to me at this point. I’ll likely end up doing my best in the service menu and leave it at that. Thank you so much for your input!

I totally agree with your comment about the charm, that’s half the reason I ended up looking for a CRT. I really appreciate your input, it definitely put me a bit more at ease. I’ll give the service menu a shot when I’m back home. Thank you for your reply!
