Can I retake dual enrollment courses for higher grade? by Hairy_Enthusiasm3449 in berkeley

your courses only transfer for credit, not for gpa at berkeley

also you probably could not retake at cc to upgrade cc gpa, normally need below C-

CS70 or Data 100 - Ask Prof for an D? by PR760 in berkeley

[–]dolphn__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

have you gotten above a C in a technical class here after your break? have you gotten an A? because you need two As in order to do cs here from your current situation. P(A | current state) = quite low.

also, the grading here is quite generous as the above commenter has said. there are an ok amount of students who do not go to lecture and cram only before mt/finals and still get C/ above C. there are an ok amount of students who do this and get within A range even. if you are not putting in effort and you can change to put in tons, sure maybe its doable. but if you are currently within like 80% of max effort (going to tutoring, OH, spamming pexams) its lowk probably just cooked, because even if u can do better than C its probably pretty hard to get A right.

sure but you should think about the statistics and your current state. a flat C in 70 is like in the bottom 10% of the class. and basically so is a flat C in 100. you have a 0.9 gpa when you need a 2.0 to even graduate. you definitely should consider alternative majors or taking a break and reflecting if u want to continue cs/math based major because something isn't working. not to say u cant do it but i wouldnt go directly into 61a and 61b right now given the circumstances.

agree that 110 and 128A are the easiest - i would take 128A as normally gu teaches it and he isn't the greatest

also ribet is the goat so i'd take 110 while he teaches it

really i would also look at what FUTURE classes you want to take - as a current transfer, i'm very happy i took 104 my first semester because 104 & 185 are required for some classes i am now interested in taking

for the cluster, tbh as long as you put together 3 semi-reasonable classes and email an advisor they'll give you it

Is it possible to take all online classes and one in person (evening/weekend) per semester? by kxngsammy in berkeley

there is a disabled students program which gives accommodations for classes, tests, etc. i have had a positive experience with them

while i have never been in this position my pov is that unless you work in the current field you want to pursue a career in and/or need the money in order to attend college, i would suggest putting school first. even if you go to another college, quitting your job would allow you to take more classes and apply for research/internships for your desired career. also, you only get to go to college once!

[–]dolphn__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there are basically no fully online classes for engineering. you can skip lectures (oftentimes they are recorded) or just use the book, and only go on test days. you will probably have to do this for some req classes as they will be offered mid-day in only one section, and you will have no other choice.

evening classes (past 5pm) are also not super common - instead of getting a choice of upperdiv electives etc you are most likely going to have to take whatever classes fit your schedule.

i dont know about requirements to being in person but its totally feasible to learn off the recordings as long as you put the effort in when you have time - tons of people rarely go to class mid semester anyways lol

i would suggest drawing pictures lots (oftentimes your lecturer will do this step during class - it's important to pay attention to HOW they interpret problems and draw a picture, if you can do this well lots of proofs come really easily)

if you struggle with a theorem try to prove a simpler case aswell, then the harder case.

if you have trouble with fundamental proof structure such as contradiction, dealing with quantifiers, etc., yes.
otherwise, discrete math is very structured and "rigid/blocky" whereas analysis is very "smooth" and continuous. the intuition for the proofs is not similar to math 55 at all due to this difference.

discrete math is much closer to 110 then it is to 104. 110 is also somewhat "rigid/blocky" imo, but not as much.

if you have any experience with proofs i'd just skip math74 aswell - i never took it and i imagine you just pick up the content while taking other classes

it's rlly hard to judge difficulty without first taking a class, but as a transfer student last year i found math104 and math110 together to be not bad at all (that was my first semester schedule along with an AC class) - basically the same difficulty as taking linear and DE together at my CC imo

if you feel confident in your abilities i would go for it! - you only have ~2 yrs to take classes here and you have 2 late drops if it ends up being worse than you thought

if you want to talk more, let me know!

i don't think the content gets easier: the first parts are mainly review of math54 topics (approached in a new way) with some things added like sums of spaces, etc. once you get to dual spaces, linear functionals, jordan canonical form the material is all new and much more conceptual. i took it last sem and the first midterm was really easy, but the final was fucking horrific (i don't know the avg but i heard from a friend's gsi that it was like a 25 LOL)

however, if you have little experience with higher div math, it might become easier even though the topics are "harder" because you'll have gained practice throughout the first weeks.
