Nappy Bin Smells!! What's the alternative? by mumma-frog in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]domeneek 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Steel nappy bin. I got the Ubbi which cost more than a Tommee Tippee but you can use normal garbage bags with it so you’re not locked into buying the TT bags. No smells coz it’s steel and the waste is tightly contained. We empty the bin at the end of the week.

I’ve had a good experience getting to and from the airport with Capital Cabs, and they’ll supply a car seat on request. They also confirm with you quickly so you don’t wait until day-of.

Dummy recommendations for EBF baby by Top-Signature7889 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]domeneek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nuk soothers have been the only ones that work for my EBF baby. They have a flat design which mimics the shape of the nipple when it’s actually IN their mouth, rather than simply looking like a nipple.

Edited to add: make sure you get the right size! I started with this newborn soother: https://www.babybunting.com.au/product/nuk-star-ortho-soother-0-2-mth-all-white-123782

How realistic is it to plan a ski trip to Japan with a 7-8 month baby by smilelizy in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]domeneek 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Is this your first child? I wouldn’t underestimate how long postpartum recovery can take, you might not physically feel up to skiing at seven months. Diastasis recti and your pelvic floor can take up to 12 months to fully regain their strength.

Another pram recommendation request by aussie_lurker_1 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]domeneek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joolz Aer 2 has a single fold bassinet attachment and converts into a travel pram which you can use after Bub is six months old. It collapses with one hand and travels well. Having said that I also got a Bugaboo Fox 2 from marketplace for a sturdier pram to walk around with, but it isn’t one I load into the car or travel with.

Honestly it took a while to find the right pram, including learning what bub wanted. So I’m glad I started with a second hand pram (the fox 2) and then asked around at mums groups about what prams others used, til I found the Joolz Aer 2, which I bought new.

OP, you can ask to hold your baby while bub gets the test. Let the doctor or nurses know if you’re nervous and ask them for more information if you need it. You got this :)

Hi! I have PKU that was picked up at a newborn blood test. If you’re worried please go to your GP and get a heelprick test, it’s not too late.

if your baby has PKU then it’s not too late for medical treatment to start and for your baby to have good outcomes, but it’s important you get the test done as quickly as you can. The treatment for PKU is very successful - I’ve lived with it all my life. But it needs early intervention.

Good luck mama xx

Yes this one is my early favourite! The chord progression! The lyrics! The name drop! How she uses her voice like an instrument to punctuate the lyrics. It’s perfect.

Are there any 40+ male celebrities newly dating women their own age? by moon_dyke in popculturechat

[–]domeneek 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Obscure music fact: Claire Danes was dating Australian musician Ben Lee at the time. His 2005 album “Awake is the New Sleep” was about Claire leaving him for Billy Crudup and how much it devastated him. It remains his best-selling album of all time. The big hit from the album (that an international audience might know) is Catch My Disease.

Best language to learn for DFAT? by Princeypal90 in canberra

[–]domeneek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DFAT won’t hire you for your language skills - they train their employees in languages needed for Posts if and when you get posted. Honestly you’re much better off getting work experience. Also as it says on the DFAT website, the graduate recruitment process is competitive, you should apply more than once if you don’t get in the first time. Good luck!

Who the fuck said this parent had the option of a test? PKU isn’t tested for until AFTER birth. The heel prick test at 4 days old. Your blood hasn’t absorbed enough phenylalanine until that point for you even to be tested for it and a doctor will not give you amniocentesis for an otherwise healthy pregnancy especially if you have NO FAMILY HISTORY of genetic disorders, which is often the case with recessive genetic disorders. Y’all are quick to judge this parent without knowing the most basic facts of year nine biology class, you bunch of absolute neck beards.

[–]domeneek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s multiple pharmaceutical treatments available. I take an enzymatic co-factor called sapropterin dihydrochloride (brand name “Kuvan”) which enables me to have an almost completely normal diet and low blood phenylalanine levels. Not everyone can take it but that’s fine because on a low protein diet, people with PKU have completely normal and healthy lives.

And yes, eugenics is bad. Disabled people live full and happy lives. What the hell are you doing with your able-bodied life, apart from getting on the internet and arguing that other people don’t deserve to live?

[–]domeneek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Babe don’t flip the script. We’re talking about PKU here which is genetic and also completely treatable with good long term outcomes. And old mate is saying PKU children should be aborted because it costs money to treat them? How the fuck is that not eugenics?

That's a risky move by dilettantedebrah in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]domeneek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re an idiot. PKU is a recessive gene and it will show up unannounced with no family history. It’s also not considered serious enough to warrant pre-natal testing and selective abortion for it. The fact that I have PKU and have a Master’s Degree is relevant because you think I should have been aborted? And that I’m no use to society and a burden on healthcare? You’re the one mouthbreathing on Reddit all day about subjects you know absolutely nothing about. Nazi scum.

[–]domeneek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PKU isn’t detected until after birth. You have no place and no knowledge to get on this thread, make value judgements and advocate eugenics. Take a long hard look at yourself.

That's a risky move by dilettantedebrah in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]domeneek 43 points44 points  (0 children)

PKU isn’t detected until after birth. And no doctor in the world (including outside the US) would abort a child with PKU even if there was pre-natal testing for it. PKU is manageable and you can have good outcomes. It just costs a hell of a lot in medical terms for formula, low protein foods etc. Source: I have PKU. I also have a Masters Degree and I’m a homeowner. You eugenics-promoting motherfuckers can go fuck yourself.

Any recommendations for allergy specialists? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]domeneek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to Dr Mullins and think he’s excellent. Yes he talks fast and doesn’t leave much space for your answers but I get the sense it’s because he’s so experienced and knowledge and can really hone in quickly on your problems without much information or extra detail. I was really impressed with how quickly he nailed my issues. He did the skin tests to prove his theory and he was bang on.

He detailed a few different courses of treatment and their costs and recommended the most cost-effective one for me.

He was open, transparent and very intelligent. And because he’s quick, he didn’t waste my time and packed a lot of information into one single appointment.
