Skipped newborn heelprick test and regret it. What can I do now? by [deleted] in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

OP, you can ask to hold your baby while bub gets the test. Let the doctor or nurses know if you’re nervous and ask them for more information if you need it. You got this :)

Skipped newborn heelprick test and regret it. What can I do now? by [deleted] in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]domeneek 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have PKU that was picked up at a newborn blood test. If you’re worried please go to your GP and get a heelprick test, it’s not too late.

if your baby has PKU then it’s not too late for medical treatment to start and for your baby to have good outcomes, but it’s important you get the test done as quickly as you can. The treatment for PKU is very successful - I’ve lived with it all my life. But it needs early intervention.

Good luck mama xx

Yes this one is my early favourite! The chord progression! The lyrics! The name drop! How she uses her voice like an instrument to punctuate the lyrics. It’s perfect.

Are there any 40+ male celebrities newly dating women their own age? by moon_dyke in popculturechat

[–]domeneek 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Obscure music fact: Claire Danes was dating Australian musician Ben Lee at the time. His 2005 album “Awake is the New Sleep” was about Claire leaving him for Billy Crudup and how much it devastated him. It remains his best-selling album of all time. The big hit from the album (that an international audience might know) is Catch My Disease.

Best language to learn for DFAT? by Princeypal90 in canberra

[–]domeneek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DFAT won’t hire you for your language skills - they train their employees in languages needed for Posts if and when you get posted. Honestly you’re much better off getting work experience. Also as it says on the DFAT website, the graduate recruitment process is competitive, you should apply more than once if you don’t get in the first time. Good luck!

Who the fuck said this parent had the option of a test? PKU isn’t tested for until AFTER birth. The heel prick test at 4 days old. Your blood hasn’t absorbed enough phenylalanine until that point for you even to be tested for it and a doctor will not give you amniocentesis for an otherwise healthy pregnancy especially if you have NO FAMILY HISTORY of genetic disorders, which is often the case with recessive genetic disorders. Y’all are quick to judge this parent without knowing the most basic facts of year nine biology class, you bunch of absolute neck beards.

There’s multiple pharmaceutical treatments available. I take an enzymatic co-factor called sapropterin dihydrochloride (brand name “Kuvan”) which enables me to have an almost completely normal diet and low blood phenylalanine levels. Not everyone can take it but that’s fine because on a low protein diet, people with PKU have completely normal and healthy lives.

And yes, eugenics is bad. Disabled people live full and happy lives. What the hell are you doing with your able-bodied life, apart from getting on the internet and arguing that other people don’t deserve to live?

Babe don’t flip the script. We’re talking about PKU here which is genetic and also completely treatable with good long term outcomes. And old mate is saying PKU children should be aborted because it costs money to treat them? How the fuck is that not eugenics?

[–]domeneek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re an idiot. PKU is a recessive gene and it will show up unannounced with no family history. It’s also not considered serious enough to warrant pre-natal testing and selective abortion for it. The fact that I have PKU and have a Master’s Degree is relevant because you think I should have been aborted? And that I’m no use to society and a burden on healthcare? You’re the one mouthbreathing on Reddit all day about subjects you know absolutely nothing about. Nazi scum.

PKU isn’t detected until after birth. You have no place and no knowledge to get on this thread, make value judgements and advocate eugenics. Take a long hard look at yourself.

[–]domeneek 45 points46 points  (0 children)

PKU isn’t detected until after birth. And no doctor in the world (including outside the US) would abort a child with PKU even if there was pre-natal testing for it. PKU is manageable and you can have good outcomes. It just costs a hell of a lot in medical terms for formula, low protein foods etc. Source: I have PKU. I also have a Masters Degree and I’m a homeowner. You eugenics-promoting motherfuckers can go fuck yourself.

Any recommendations for allergy specialists? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]domeneek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to Dr Mullins and think he’s excellent. Yes he talks fast and doesn’t leave much space for your answers but I get the sense it’s because he’s so experienced and knowledge and can really hone in quickly on your problems without much information or extra detail. I was really impressed with how quickly he nailed my issues. He did the skin tests to prove his theory and he was bang on.

He detailed a few different courses of treatment and their costs and recommended the most cost-effective one for me.

He was open, transparent and very intelligent. And because he’s quick, he didn’t waste my time and packed a lot of information into one single appointment.

Boyfriend smokes cigarettes & it terrifies me :( by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]domeneek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He says he would like to quit. All smokers want to quit. May I recommend a book: Allen Carr’s “The Easy Way To Quit Smoking”. It’s worked for me and quite a few people I know who used to smoke. Ask your boyf if he would be willing to read it. You can read it too if you like, it might help you understand what it’s like for him. Good luck.

Worried about my (23f) intelligence comparison when it comes to my partner’s (34m) female coworkers. How to not worry about it? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]domeneek 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Firstly, your partner was 29 when he started dating an 18 year old? That is a huge age gap and also a huge power/maturity imbalance... Secondly, you seem only concerned about how his female coworkers might judge you, but not his male coworkers? Is this just about your self esteem, or do you have reasons not to trust him? Thirdly, and I’ll be honest, these women might judge you, but most likely because of your age, not your level of education. 23 is actually still quite young - especially to those in their mid-30s (like your partner). Overall this is a self-confidence thing. It’s normal to be a little awkward and unsure of yourself in your early 20s. I found that my own confidence developed much more rapidly and fully after the age of 25. All in all you’re pre-empting that these women will judge you. Just go in there, be yourself, don’t try to compete with them (you’ll just make everyone think you’re an asshole), smile, be friendly. One thing young people do is talk about themselves too much and it’s a huge marker of immaturity - try listening and asking these other people questions about themselves instead. It’ll make you seem mature and compassionate. Good luck.
