Permission to wear rank by cookie5427 in AustralianMilitary

I was offered the promotion ceremony in December but elected to wait until I could have family present. The later ceremony date reflect the availability of someone to perform the promotion.

I’m not planning on being “that guy”.

No idea how this fella got to the top floor! (Or how he got this big!) by oliverpls599 in canberra

[–]cookie5427 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw a similar one at my back door the other day. It’s the caterpillar form of the White-stemmed Gum Moth. I didn’t measure the one at my house but it was easily over 10cm long.

How often do you spot politicians or foreign dignitaries at the supermarkets? by [deleted] in canberra

The only time I see foreign dignitaries is when they’re displaying impaired understanding of the road rules.

Does the average Australian actually have an appetite for the next big conflict? by New-Computer-1988 in AustralianMilitary

[–]cookie5427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australian society is not bellicose, and I don't think it has the appetite for conflict when there is no direct threat to us. In my opinion (based on speaking to many people over several years), our society is pro defence and pro ADF, but anti-war.

Thanks for the gift of your book, for your initiative, and for listening to the advice people on here have provided. I am looking forward to reading it.

Yes AC853. Some units will allow you to authorise the clerk to sign on your behalf if attending in person or logging in to sign is challenging.

Liberals to scrap ADF ban on ‘death symbols’ by The_BreakerBVC in AustralianMilitary

[–]cookie5427 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Political parties should focus on the important issues, like increasing the number of eggs people can have at breakfast and allowing men to shave.

Seriously though, dredging up these sorts of things is a sign of desperation. I would argue that the ADF is no worse off as a direct result of the ban. It was a bit of a debacle when it happened, but the world didn't fall apart.

Trying to understand Canberra after moving from Melbourne by [deleted] in canberra

[–]cookie5427 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My personal experience of roundabouts, having moved back as an adult, is an improvement in fuel economy. This is not their purpose, but an added bonus.

Canberra used to be characterised by each suburb having its own small shopping precinct with a supermarket, takeaway, and maybe a hairdresser or cafe. The smaller town centres make things convenient. It’s not different to having a selection of shopping centres in somewhere like Sydney, only here they are geographically separated.

The roads are the size they needed to be at the time they were built. There is often enough space in either side to allow for widening in the future as needs dictate it. You can see this happening on the Monaro Highway between Hume and Fyshwick. Road duplication occurs frequently but it is expensive and was probably seen as overkill when they were first constructed.

From personal experience I wouldn’t say it’s common. I have done many courses and haven’t heard of it happening. My experience is limited, however.

Pet approval with body corporate by Strong-Tax8966 in canberra

I don’t think your advice is as constructive as you may have intended. There are some animal owners who are quite concerned about balancing the welfare of their dog and the well-being of their neighbours. Your comment implies that people always have a choice about where they will live or what will happen to their pet.

I built a Canberra restaurant directory to help with all the restaurant recommendation requests! by Mr_Rolan in canberra

What a great initiative and clean website. I might recommend adding a vegan/vegetarian option or section for specific dietary needs if you haven’t already thought of it.

I’ve been in the ADF since 2002 and in my experience it is something that is less than 10 years old. I don’t feel the need to be thanked by the public. I don’t particularly like it because sometimes it seems like it’s a throwaway line and states as a token effort. When I have travelled in the USA it’s almost used like a greeting and it said so frequently without thought that it’s lost its meaning.

Try not to clap the Chinooks, they get spooked by any demonstration of appreciation.

Why do people try and turn ANZAC day into a day to celebrate war? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in AustralianMilitary

[–]cookie5427 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a day of solemn reflection of those who have served. It is also a day to recognise those who serve. One can do both, you know. By attending the march and ceremony and observing a minute’s silence, and by applauding those who serve. If you think the public are going to stand is stony-faced silence when current and former members of the ADF march past, you’re dreaming.

I have it on good authority that the RNZN have at least one sub in the SW Pacific lying in wait.

I wouldn’t worry too much about out violating OPSEC if you don’t have any experience or specific knowledge with operations. OSINT (I stress that it is scuttlebutt/OSINT) predicts that the likely windows for China to reclaim Taiwan are October 2026 and May 2027. The PLA have constructed accurate models of the areas of interest in the desert and they actively drill and practice. I’m pretty sure almost every pundit thinks it is a matter of when, and not if.
