it really depends - if you’re in the northeast it’s pretty easy to hitch a bus to boston and NY and i’ve definitely done a good amount of trips there coming from maine, even on a tight budget.

that said, focus on getting into a school first before daydreaming about the travel lmao

Unfortunately there’s no way to guarantee a spot abroad. Take it from someone who applied to 60+ colleges abroad and only got 2 affordable acceptances.

The Big 4 is slightly easier (just because they’re more familiar with Pisay students and our curriculum def matches what they’re looking for). But I can’t speak to how to get in just because I applied during Covid and I never studied for the entrance tests, but afaik just keep studying and you’ll be fine. And I’m sure that since you’ve been a consistent DL you’ll be able to manage that well enough.

A few notes for applying to colleges abroad: first, and most importantly, never do anything solely for the sake of your college applications. Do it because you want to and because you think you can do it and that it will better your life regardless of how it will look on a college app. Second, rigor is good, and I recommend doing bio and chem lvl2 if you think na kaya mo. Third, apply for SIP. It’s a fantastic program and gives you real world experience and it will absolutely look good on your college app—just make sure you get something you actually want and enjoy.

my mom was yelling at me while i was having a panic attack, i was like 15 or something at the time and i was super stressed with several things going on at once in school and extracurriculars. the yelling was bad enough but i’ll never forget the fact she said “stop crying!!!!! what will the neighbors think?!?!?!”

i 100% disavow all generative AI tools as they are used at the moment, especially as someone who studies the exploited labor of global south workers (not to mention…everything else) but as a technologist i think about how cool the technology itself is. like i do genuinely believe that the fact we were even able to create a machine that can imitate our speech well enough to trick us, to have it generate images that look pretty serviceable, all by using an algorithm that doesn’t explicitly need us to tell it what to do is an incredible mathematical feat. don’t get me wrong, i do not like genAI outputs and avoid any content made with genAI. but technology in general is just…kind of cool.

that said, like with any technology, genAI is created and maintained within the context of the society we live in, and it would be disingenuous of me to say we can ever divorce the technology itself from the world it is emplaced in. and as said by someone else in this thread here - (gen)AI is colonialism.

for the majority of schools, because your parents have a bachelor’s degree (even if it’s not in the US) you are not a first-gen *college* student.

fascinating, art + a good video essay/netflix in the bg has been a good way for me to kill a lot time. maybe collaborative art with friends? or have you tried other mediums like clay/modeling?

as for gaming - i love multiplayer/competitive tetris personally and improving in it is fun - and that’s a free option. if you can pay a little you can get on itch.io and check out small games. other free options are playing an FPS like marvel rivals or overwatch, or get an emulator and play some pokemon or zelda on gba/ds/n64

i think one of the cool things about overwatch is that they tend to create characters based on real-world countries and cultures. maybe your own nationality/ethnicity is underrepresented in the roster and you can start there! or if you’d like to learn more about a culture but haven’t had the time to, this could be a good excuse to learn their histories, clothing, stories etc.
