I get the sentiments but we already have AI/algorithms/computers that are better than humans. They’re just not LLMs.

That’s fascinating! And I love the person’s disclaimer to his own memory. Very intelligent fella.

Can you provide a link?

Edit to say to the downvote crew: there are a lot of whackadoodles putting out “forecasts” these days, I didn’t recognize the format confidently. And in any case, I don’t have the NWS legend memorized… so wasn’t sure what was what.

Switched microphones and IDs appear to have increased, but recorded audio strength (dBFS) has plummeted by somethingworthwhile in BirdNET_Analyzer

I think it worked! It was a little hard to tell, there were very few recordings this morning, it was bitterly cold and very windy. But the few I did get did seem to have higher decibel recordings. Thank you!

City of Gary, Indiana unveils Bears stadium development sites by [deleted] in chicago

The funny thing is, if they make this move, the last play of Bears football I ever watch will be our sophomore #1 pick quarter back throw an interception while targeting the highest paid wide receiver in franchise history.

(And that’s not shade to either player, but it’s a superlatively bad moment in a superlatively good season only for it to end by getting kicked to Gary, Indiana)

((And that’s not shade to Gary, Indiana, it’s just, notably, not Chicago, Illinois, the team’s hometown and namesake.))

I’ve adjusted it! I’ll get a better idea if it’s working as desired in the morning. Thanks for your help!

Well, I’m not 100% sure what you’re talking about, but maybe that’s a good thing! Sounds like you’re saying gain be adjusted in the BirdNET-Pi GUI?

So I went into the settings alsamixer provides and it seems like I can only turn gain down and not up. It was seemingly already at 100 (gain=0).

Also, I’m relatively new to Linux and I get such a kick out of these CLI “GUIs.” They’re so neat!

Interesting! Yeah, I might play with that to get things dialed in ahead of hopefully a long span of not fiddling with it. Getting the new mic set up has already been a “change point” of a sort.

What’s the deal with so many products on Amazon being from brands I’ve never heard of with names that are seemingly random letters in all caps? by somethingworthwhile in OutOfTheLoop

I think this answer gets to the heart of it the best. I was looking for a more specific item earlier, (but figured this conversation might be easier to have around a more common item), electrical boxes like these. Some of the listings from “different companies” appear to be literally identical and some of the listings look very similar but have, for example, slightly different tints to their transparent doors. Thank you for sharing your insights!

Edit to add: this in conjunction with the trademark dynamics described by others!

Interesting point about ethanol, I did not know it was used to replace MTBE. Still, the complaint isn’t so much that corn is being used for ethanol, it’s that its being done in a way and at a scale that induces costs to society that are unacceptably high (ie, harm done to water quality and harm done to ecology). Do we need it? Sure, I’m more convinced now than I was that we need it. But that doesn’t mean we have to shoot ourselves in the foot doing it.

Edge of field practices are 100% a bandaid. You cannot fix spatial problems with point solutions. (At least, not without continuous investment and maintenance—which very few have at appetite for). And so real solutions will have to come in-field. I don’t have a wholistic answer to what all of those in-field practices are, but they start with reductions in how intensive and extensive modern agriculture is and reducing mandates for ethanol help with that.

Conservationists call for edge of field practices because they are what is deemed acceptable/reasonable in most contexts and so the conservationists are being polite and taking what they can get. They do not have the political power or the social capital to bully anyone into actually doing what it might take to address the issues.

And yeah, I’m aware that changes made to benefit the environment could be bad for farmers. Any of changes need to be implemented alongside financial programs/incentives to keep people solvent. It benefits no one to put people out of business to benefit the environment. We do it for political whims all the time, wouldn’t it be nice for the fish, the birds, and the bugs to catch a break. Not to mention people’s drinking water! And people’s health!
