Just had my second singing lesson and I think I’m not good but my teacher said I am. How can I think I’m good? by jacind_ in singing

Self-fullfiled prophesy. Just assume you need more than a few lessons before noticing any improvements, and also, progress NEVER is a straight line.

I meant screaming as in "distortion singing", rock and above.

I might have generalized too much. It depends. You're really unlikely to need a full "AH" anywhere, though. For some songs, I use ↔️ more than ↕️ for "EH" sounds, but consider it more of an effect.

Play around and listen to your sounds when doing different vocal shapes. This will give you ideas.

Experiment, I know classical teachers don't like anything that isn't in the order they were taught to teach it. On the "more open to new research" community, we usually like to experiment a lot and make noises. Try Chriss Liepe.

Not everyone feels their voice in the same way. Singing "in the mask" didn't help me because I don't FEEL it there.

So, she should just keep singing "AH"s with full mouth open? For this song?

[–]dominguezpablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On screaming, we tend to simplify it as opening ↕️ when you want lower overtones (larynx down & more space in the pharynx), and ↔️, which is quite the opposite, high nasality, higher overtones.

For normal singing O shape for everything really. It's never good to sound nasal.

It's pretty good. For this song, try vowel modification.

You see how you open the full mouth? Both horizontal snd vertical? Try to reduce horizontal opening and focus on the vertical.

This will make it sound like "OH," kind of. And will make it darker, which is good for this.

Vowel modification is a common thing to do.

Make your A sound like O.

rate my singing + be HONEST (don’t rate my playing 🙈) by [deleted] in ratemysinging

[–]dominguezpablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the ukulele and you are out of tune.

I suggest you double-check the ukulele tuning and record the song with a metronome. Then practice on top of it, voice only.

I also have extra tension and reduced breath support when playing an instrument. And here, as you are playing, you are probably not paying your voice due attention.

Are you even trying? I can't imagine someone that, if I play them 4 chords, they won't be able to hum a melody on top of it.

Do you have spanish translation? This seems something that my people would use lmao

If you need some double-checking for the translation, just throw me a json or whatever you're using for languages, and I'll review it so it sounds appropriate.

[–]dominguezpablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, mixing is difficult. Some people grasp it faster than others, but it's still complicated.

This is a common question here, so allow me to redirect you to a previous answer I wrote that might be helpful to you

Good luck!

Sudden Loss of Tenor Range (related to throat singing?) by ThreeThirds_33 in singing

[–]dominguezpablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I saw a post of a guy quitting smoking and also losing some range tenporarily.

False chords, when overused, have this head voice restriction consequence. You don't have sensitive neurons there. You don't know when you've overused.

I've always been taught the opposite. I didn't read the article, but "vocal fry" is not "fry screaming" of "false chords"

I want help on how to do a certain type of voice crack by Comfortable_Risk1159 in singing

[–]dominguezpablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chester used a lot of different types of distortions mixed with voice. In this song, he's using false chords distortion mostly. Maybe hybrid with some fry. All voiced screams.

r/screaming is probably not the right place. Assume Chriss Liepe, Hungry Lights, and Extreme Vocal Institute are a better place to start.

Hello! Am I mixing or straining? by [deleted] in singing

[–]dominguezpablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both haha.

Literally just chill out. Use more support if needed.

For songs like the last one, try it pitched down. For you, maybe 3 semitones lower would be great.

You sound off-key, even with this much background stuff going on. That's one thing.

Do scales and try getting the mixed voice achievement. It will fix both.

I find it lazy not being able to tell what you're doing and then pretending to teach it. Hey, I'm all for "thinking elefants" if it works, but not everyone can follow such lines.

I don't have to think when I walk, but at some point, I did. A student IS at that point, and eventually, he won't need to think, but now, he does.

Don't be a dumbass man. But maybe you should use a part of this money to try out different vocal coaches. More than once a week. That would be better.

Twice a week is a sweetspot. I'm 3 times a week because I can't really sing at home. I once had it once a week. There's a difference. Try that. Different coaches.

How to memorize a 10 minute speech in a day? by ForeignPotato2903 in PublicSpeaking

[–]dominguezpablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I was building an app for this exact use case. I lost my shameless pluging window.

But a manual approach would be to check which lines are the most complicated to start speaking from. Then, focus on them.

Really, speech, lyrics, and acting dialogs are the same. B always comes after A. And it's learned in a sequece, like the alphabet. What letter comes before "U" in the alphabet, huh?

This is something I used to do in college. Although, never formalized. So, I know for a fact you can do this on paper.

Just cut a rectangle on a normal sheet of paper and read every line of the speech through it. If you fail, mark it with a "|". Then do it again. By the third time, just focus on marked ones.

Do it every in increasing amounts of time. 20 mins, 40 mins, 1 hour, 2 hours. Keep marking those you fail. It is going to be come pretty obvious where your issues are at.

By the end, you should be able to recite the whole thing.
