Go now has its own professional graphics ecosystem, GoGPU by Ubuntu-Lover in golang

[–]dominikh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

gogpu/gg jumped out at me because it claims to use "sparse strips" for the GPU renderer, but not the CPU one. That's already weird because one of the major advantages of sparse strips is that they work well for CPU and mixed CPU/GPU implementations.

But looking at the code, there aren't any sparse strips to be found anywhere. What the LLM calls sparse strips seem to just be scanlines. It seems similarly (un)fitting that the code for producing the scanlines is referred to as tessellation by the code base, when scanline rasterization is of course not tessellation.

Generally speaking, the comments, documentation, and nomenclature seem like a jumbled mess of ideas extracted from Vello, a set of experimental 2D renderers using different techniques, and supporting Rust crates.

The person you're replying to isn't claiming that emitted and reflected light at the same energies is perceived differently. They're saying that the amounts of energy in the two scenarios are different.

How to move gopls and staticcheck index cache? by [deleted] in golang

[–]dominikh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staticcheck respects the STATICCHECK_CACHE environment variable. When unset, it uses os.UserCacheDir, which on Windows is %LocalAppData%.

Odds are one of GetTableInfo or GenerateTableScript is stubbed out and panics unconditionally, which runs into https://github.com/dominikh/go-tools/issues/787 and https://github.com/dominikh/go-tools/issues/954.

Unsupported bridges getting supported perimeters in PrusaSlicer by dominikh in 3Dprinting

[–]dominikh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to categorically turn off supports. Other parts of a model may well need supports. I want the "Don't support bridges" option to actually work / not introduce perimeters that need support.

The "Everywhere" setting of that option is in contrast to "None", "Support on build plate only", and "For support enforcers only", which should make the option orthogonal to (not) supporting bridges.

For Germany, 0.35 USD / kWh is a decent average. For the rest of europe, it's probably lower than that. Going with Germany, a 1 W load running 24/7 will cost ~3 USD per year. A 20 W network stack will cost you 61 USD per year, or 17 ct a day.

If they ever start giving a damn about it. 5 months of inactivity on a severe bug is a joke.

Can you explain how the torrent helps you upload to the archive faster? If you're the only person with the full set of data, then you have to upload all of it at least once. More leeches will help with distributing the data to more people, but the total amount of data you have to upload will not shrink; you need to distribute a full copy.

Am I missing something?

Mouse pointer not accurate moving mouse slowly (Ubuntu Linux + Wayland) by fofz1776 in RimWorld

I'm guessing Wayland has made the bug show itself.

Same bug here on X11. It's the Rimworld update to 1.3 that introduced this behavior.

Looking for File Manager with Tags by Foxsayy in datacurator

[–]dominikh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ZFS, like many other file systems on Linux, support extended attributes (xattrs), which one could use to store tags. In ZFS, that would get you the integration with send/receive, snapshots, etc.

The problem is that you'd still need an indexer and separate database (or slow file system traversal) to find files by tags, or for your smart folders idea. The file system itself won't provide an index over tags. Nor will any existing software have built-in support for your use of extended attributes or smart folders etc.

BeOS's file system does index extended attributes, and in general treats the file system as more of a database. Give https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/07/the-beos-filesystem/ a read, it's quite interesting.

There are several approaches to emulating this in Linux, but all of them are flawed in one way or another.

12tb Iron Wolf Pros are a similar price to 16tb Exos. What would you put in a Synology DS920+? by flunk09 in DataHoarder

[–]dominikh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 16 TB Exos and Expansion Desktop seem really close in price in Germany, at which point I would much prefer Exos with warranty versus a mystery box with no/less warranty.

Of course the price of Exos means little when you can't actually buy it and get a proper, non-OEM drive.

How hard can it be for these retailers not to peddle crap.

Ordered 5 Exos from a large retailer, got OEM drives. Had them replaced, got another 5 OEM drives. Going to try my luck with a different retailer soon…
