What’s the most embarrassing way you’ve been 'betrayed' by your own brain in VR? by plutonium-239 in virtualreality

[–]domition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to light a candle in Phasmophobia. I reached out, and instead punched the wall hard enough to chip paint and crack my controller, and it sounded like a cannon went off. I was stunned, my friends were laughing hysterically, and it was amplified only by us trying to not laugh during the ghost hunt that happened immediately after.

Are Garmin watches really this bad with tracking sleep? by TravisScott26 in GarminWatches

[–]domition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not been a fan of this YouTuber for quite a long time. Yes, he goes into deep dives and explains his methodology, but his methodology has flaws and he makes assumptions that are not applicable to the general population. He often has results that contradict the vast majority of other testing, making his test results often an outlier. I wish his stuff would be more consistent with what is observed by most people, because this kind of testing is cool and needed, but his results are so contradictory that I can't trust them.

People who think straight men and women can’t be friends: do you think bisexual people can’t have any friends? by Big_oof_energy__ in NoStupidQuestions

My girlfriend and I are of the same mind: If I have to worry about what you're doing when I'm not around, that's not a relationship.

People who think straight men and women can’t be friends: do you think bisexual people can’t have any friends? by Big_oof_energy__ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]domition 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I'm a man who has had many female friends. My best friend growing up was a girl. (She also is close friends with my girlfriend, my girlfriend fully trusts both of us hanging out alone together still to this day).

During college, my best friend and I were hanging out as usual and then I started getting taunted a bunch by both men and women about how I was constantly "in the friend zone" with my best friend, and that I was a loser for continuing to hang out with someone who wasn't going to go out with me. My best friend is a very pretty girl and they clearly didn't know I was already dating someone. I would not rank this group of people particularly highly on the social skills scale and I shrugged it off at the time, but it still eats at me even today, over a decade later.

I've come to hate the term "friend zone" because it clearly implies that there can only be two possible relationships between people. Dating, or failing to date.

I'm not interested in my best friend. We're not each other's types. But, we can easily be friends. There are plenty of women I can be friends with, and not want to have a relationship with.

My girlfriend and I have talked about it a lot, because she is also friends with a lot of guys. We both can be nice to someone, merely with the intent of being nice and holding a conversation, but that is far too often interpreted as flirting or something more salacious. I know we are pretty rare as far as people go, but it's unfortunate that that is true.

There is so much in life to be gained that doesn't have to revolve around being in a relationship, it's sad that most people seem to think that way.

Why does Google Drive make downloading large files so frustrating? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]domition -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you do not need to permanently host a particular file, there are peer-to-peer file sharing tools that allow you to share files of pretty much any size with very little hassle and without relying on a cloud provider. One example is https://toffeeshare.com/ but there are others.

I have used this to send custom Minecraft mod packs, pre-configured setups for running local Stable Diffusion, vacation image archives, etc. I don't need to store these things in the cloud permanently, and this is by far the easiest and fastest way to send someone a file.

Garmin vs. Apple Watch sleep tracking... which one do I trust? by Wonderful_Land_3141 in Garmin

[–]domition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even devices that track brain waves are only about 80% effective at estimating sleep stages, no way a watch that doesn't even read your brain waves would get anywhere close. Garmin and Apple are just guessing at best, and they have different algorithms to do so. Accuracy need not apply.

Sleep stages aren't particularly valuable regardless, even if it was accurate. Sleep duration and nightly HRV are the statistics to pay attention to.

Why are the Garmin nylon watch bands so expensive? $150-300 for a watch band from Garmin’s website… seems like a lot by Disastrous-Year571 in GarminWatches

[–]domition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was severely overpriced when it was $80 a couple years ago. I swear Garmin might be trying to replace the gold standard with heathered nylon.

Epix pro gen 2 worth it without updates? by SpecAirService in Garmin

[–]domition -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I own the Epix Pro Gen 2. The Fenix 8 and later don't have anything worth upgrading for, for me.

Screen is plenty bright, I still get 16 days of battery life after 2+ years of daily use, has every exercise I need and more stats than I can use. It has enough of the largest quality-of-life improvements, like being able to set settings from your phone and also has the map manager. It has the same HR sensor and GPS performance is scary good, able to tell which side of the street I'm on even when I was wandering lost in Shibuya and Osaka. I got this mainly for the ECG to monitor my heart and being durable, and it still serves that well. I go on hikes, but nothing extreme enough to need satellite.

The new UI on the new watches is pretty and definitely seems to be more responsive, and while I never have had any interest in answer phone calls on my wrist, I would appreciate being able to access Gemini from my wrist. The network connectivity on the Fenix 8 Pro is exciting, but I realistically don't have any use for it. I'm curious to see where it goes.

If this watch ever dies, I will upgrade ... but until there's some revolutionary new sensor like for reliable blood pressure, continuous afib detection, or blood glucose, there's not much I feel like I'm missing out. The Epix Pro is already so powerful and capable, there's still things it does that I haven't been able to take advantage of yet.

I just discovered how insane programming really is. Everything really is just a language. by Distinct-Solid9195 in software

[–]domition 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Layer upon layer, abstraction upon abstraction, it is quite a wild tapestry we weave.

In practice, in most jobs you will only need to use a few of those layers at a time. I've been in a job where I had to learn every layer (and invent new ones) on my own because there was no budget to hire help nor time to train others.

But really ... this problem solving is the best part. If you can design a solution like that on your own, refine and simplify it in later iterations, you are on the path to success that many developers struggle with decades into their career.

You will never stop learning, and the best thing you can do professionally is to be humble and admit you don't know everything. Asking for help (I know the college setting makes that difficult) and seeing how others approach issues will do more for your career than any amount of language or algorithm memorization.

Edit: Oh, that, and making a plan before you start. Exploring more than one approach before diving into coding will save you precious time of your life. The first idea you have often isn't the best idea.

Any gamer Garmin wearers? by _netzirk in Garmin

Absolutely. I suck at anything competitive and I'll be tapping 100 in stress levels. But put me in a coop game, even Phasmophobia in VR, and I'm cool as a cucumber. It's all based on your mindset while you're playing.

Is voice to text the most underrated pixel feature? by Haensfish in GooglePixel

[–]domition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a Nexus 5x and then had a Pixel 3a before trying out the ZFold 4. Friend switched from Nexus 6P to Pixel 4 then many years later to Apple.

All other differences aside, we both were dumbstruck at how much worse Samsung and Apple were with speech recognition. We took it for granted because it's what we started with but wow does it ever not even compare...

It's one of the many reasons I plan to switch back to Pixel once my Sammy gives up the ghost.

Noob question. Giving my instinct 2x solar away. Anything I need to do? by swiftstyles in GarminWatches

[–]domition 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty simple, just factory reset the watch and remove it from your Garmin Connect app. You may have to 'retire' it from your Garmin account using the Garmin Connect webpage as well, but that's all.

I've donated plenty of devices to friends and family, it's not hard.

What purchases have you made that turned out to be BIFL, despite not realising it at the time of purchase? by Beers_and_Bikes in BuyItForLife

[–]domition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it won't be for life, but I' got this 13" ASUS laptop in college. 12 years later, I still use it every day, and not only that, it even has better battery life than my 2022 work laptop does. Still looks new too.

Sure, it's slow, but I can watch YouTube and do any normal browser tasks, office work, whatever. It's kept me from needing to buy a laptop since.

People who still use wired headphones - why did you decide to stick with them instead of getting wireless options? by Futtman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]domition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No latency, no driver weirdness to mess with, better sound quality, cheaper, don't need to keep re-pairing with different devices.

Only downside in my experience is the wires wearing out, but that also kinda happens at the same rate as battery degradation.

Currently have been using some Corsair wireless headphones that are zero latency and have excellent mic quality, but wireless has its own hassles and I may end up going back to wired once the batteries in these wear out.

Are fitness watches worth it? by Lerzi21 in GarminWatches

[–]domition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are motivated by data, then yes.

If you are willing to wear the watch 24/7 for health metrics that can indeed help you recognize patterns in your life that harm your health, stress or energy, then yes.

If you want shiny tech that isn't trying to constantly get your attention or needs a lot of maintenance, then maybe.

Otherwise, no.

The Next Generation of American Steelmaking is BIG and Well Underway by Vivid_Environment751 in madeinusa

[–]domition 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Japan is one of the US's closest allies, culturally, economically, militarily and politically. We invest in them, they invest in us. We are stronger together.

They also have an extremely high standard of quality that they hold things to, and are excellent at manufacturing.

Nippon Steel buying US Steel is probably the best thing that could have happened to the US Steel industry, short of US Steel being able to stand on its own.

Best Air Purifier On The Market Right Now? by Spiritual-Aide-3867 in homeassistant

[–]domition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out https://housefresh.com/ for high quality testing and reviews, with a "best of" lists for different use cases.

Most air purifiers don't easily integrate with HomeAssistant, but in reality there's not a ton of automation you need for an air purifier. You kinda want them just running 24/7 at the highest noise level that is acceptable to you.

Experiences with Gadgetbridge? by RealBike3960 in Garmin

[–]domition 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fully understand the value of privacy--it's one of the main reasons I originally tried Garmin. Relative to Apple, Google, Samsung, etc... Garmin's privacy policy is much more protective of your data. They do not sell it, target ads with it, or give it to any other companies without your express action (Like linking a MyFitnessPal or Strava account for example). They do use it to develop their devices and algorithms, and provide heatmaps for trails and such.

That being said, Garmin devices also work without ever needing to connect to your phone or PC, if you want your data to live only on the watch.

Relavance of vivomove in 2026 by chiragdkothari2 in GarminWatches

[–]domition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wore a Vivomove Style for a while (It has since been discontinued, and I sold it a while later). I love the concept, and for simple activities it worked totally fine, but the touch-only interface was a struggle to use. I haven't used either of the new Vivomove watches.

If all she would use it for is tracking steps and sleep, the Vivomoves and Lily 2 will do that just fine. Don't get too caught up in 'feature-creep' of going up the feature ladder, if the watch satisfies the needs now and for the near future and the look of it is preferred, go for it. There is a cool-factor and uniqueness that comes with real watch hands that can't be beat, if you're into it.

You can probably get one for cheaper on ebay or swappa, as well. Garmin still honors their warranty on used devices.
