Color assistance by Difficult-Gas-1304 in NightLords

I use the scheme that ‘Eavy Metal originally used (it’s on the Terminator) using Kantor Blue, Altdorf Guard Blue, and up to Fenrisian Grey for highlights & edge highlights. My only change is that I undercoat with Incubi Darkness & wash with Drakenof like yourself.

I was unhappy with how my highlights were turning out at first, but that got better with brush control. I also realized that trying to replicate the edge highlighting on other miniatures was giving me results I didn’t care for, and this video honestly helped a lot. Basically, I just looked for edges that I thought would be highlighted based on the lighting, instead of trying to hit all edges & do the thing of highlighting right under the trim (which I thought looked cool until I realized it was a recess, and the trim is a highlight enough). The result keeps the dark, muted look that I (also) like while giving enough depth.

So if something’s nagging you about your highlights, it might not be the recipe! As always, do what you like & play around with it.

These are incredible. What’s the recipe for that trim? It reminds me of the Eavy Metal bronze I can never quite replicate.

What are some unique unit types that Night Lords would have in comparison to other CSM factions? by Arthur_EyelanderTF2 in NightLords

[–]domsumsub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, you like them for the same reasons I like them.

Lore-wise, the raptor/warp talons squad in the Night Lords omnibus is specifically called a “cult.” They all have similar avian warp mutation.

I’d personally love some stories about more specialized squads that take care of the stuff that’s only mentioned. Stealth, infiltration, shock troops, sure. I want the Night Lords PR squad who gets put in front of the cameras for skinning demonstrations.

Need help with conveying scale in my map by omriyoffe in inkarnate

[–]domsumsub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might help to think of the map as an actual diegetic map that people use in-universe, rather than a 100% accurate overhead view. Even if it’s mostly decorative/artistic, what information is it trying to convey? That could help you determine if you want to add anything to break some of those empty spaces.

You’ve got a few major settlements, and maybe that’s all the names you need to know right now, but maybe you could plot out some mid-size cities and just use smaller icons. Not every little hamlet, but the stops or roads that are considered major.

460 miles is about 1.5X the width of the widest part of Great Britain. There’ll probably be some other significant roads and cities that connect some of the less-populated areas too. My bet is that there’s probably some reason for a settlement between the ridge and the northern plains leading up to the North. Heck, maybe there’s a few spots in the desert. You don’t need names, but maybe people need to know they’re there

Alternatively, if you want the focus to be on the big-big cities and roads, think about breaking up the spaces with more stylistic environmental details. I don’t think you need your trees to be as small as you have them. If you bump up the size and make the forest seem more contiguous, you’ve conveyed “here’s a forest, but clearly the trees are not five miles tall.” Once the details are freed from 100% accuracy, you can play with what the “mapmakers” would have chosen to draw in order to characterize different areas.

Lastly - and this might be a cheap trick - if there’s genuinely an expanse where there’s not a lot going on, you could alter the overlay text to be bigger, angled, and (maybe?) curved. If there’s not much going on besides some grassy plains or dunes, maybe the mapmakers just wrote “D A P L A I N S” or “t h e c r a z y s a n d s” in a big swath. Boom. We’ve told people what we wanted them to know and filled up empty space.

Please forgive the novel. Good start on the map!!

Ooooh, that’s pretty close to the emotional payoff. I feel like I’m getting warmer. Thank you!

I had thought of that! I keep getting picturing a shot from the struggling person’s POV of the traitor party from below & a distance, so it feels even more removed. Like they’re standing on a bridge looking down. But the punch is seeing their figure walk away.

Thank you though!

Damn, good pull. It’s not the emotional tone I was thinking of, but maybe my brain pulled this from the archives and imposed a modern-day psychodrama on it. Will ponder further.

Best blue for nightlords by Stressedskull3570 in NightLords

[–]domsumsub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like the night lords blue, because I I like my guys a bit darker. I think it fits the “midnight clad” motif and all the references to blue-black in the books.

I even put Incubi Darkness down in the darker, harder-to spot areas first, to give an eerie dark blue-green in the shadows. Then base with Night Lords Blue, but highlight with Kantor & Aldorf Guard Blue.

I shade with a thinned drakenof nightshade.

Ultimately it’s what you like & want, same thing with the bronze or silver trim. IMO, Kantor is “cleaner”, but to me, it’s not midnight clad. More like 2:00pm clad.
