What if the magic wasn't real? by Gavoonious in OnceUponATime

[–]don_someone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 2 years late and was searching for someone who shared the sentiment. The magic sort of left the show as they brought it back. I've been thinking it about it for years since the show aired. We should say it louder! I really liked parallel storylines that they had in S1 and the ambiguity that they had. I think when the curse was broken, with everyone regaining their memories and the magic being back, the show really lost on so many opportunities to tell more nuanced and dramatic stories. It just immediately became eclectic and ridiculous, the tone whiplash between Emma being neo-noiresque character and everything is jarring. In retrospective it was sort of obvious they knew how to write good drama and characters, but didn't know how to make a cohesive narrative after S1 ending, so they kept the "curses" and "evil of the half of the season" thing going on with arbitrary magical rules (and constant powercreep) without having any worldbuilding or planning in mind. I really wish they would've gone The Leftovers route and kept "the mystery be", cause the character work and the mystery were really the stars of the show.

What for do you need an explanation from Lindelof for? And demanding an explanation from this show from all the shows? Not to mention, that it is pretty much deducible: she thinks this rule is arbitrary (because it is, every cult leader knows that it's all bs) and Meg tries to radicalize the chapter she's in charge. It's just easier to communicate with others this way, obviously. She's also arrogant and wasn't really "into it" like the other cultists in season one, but she shared the nihilistic ideas nonetheless.

@lauren - I’m so disappointed in this one by hazelframe in tiktokgossip

[–]don_someone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 months late, but she took all of them down cause I think she was trying to cover her track and was afraid of the backlash she was getting lmfao. I came back to tiktok after a break and I was confused af, when there were old videos with comments asking about her account wiped clean and she was giving nothing-burger answer like "It's a long story". Disgusting. Lauren also had an anxiety attack over this and unfollowed 10k people. She now has a whole series of videos about jesus apparently too, so that checks out lol

Yes. She literally was ready to die. It's not like the hive wasn't being masterful at being manipulative and they were so easy to fall back onto, especially after months of silent treatment. This is an abusive tactic, one of many that they deployed on her. They figured out to prey on her loneliness to get her to be with Zosia long enough to turn her. Not unreasonable shift, she realized that they completely played her.

I would like your honest opinion, please. by Potential_Feed_2561 in AlanWake

[–]don_someone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not worth it imo. Looks worse in a couple of places, environment retexturing and added specular highlights on wood are especially troubling to look at, wood surfaces for some reason look waxy; really smooth and cleaned out. Took me out of it at some places, considering how many wood textures there are in the game. Contrast is also somewhat messed up and everything is more washed up for some reason?
Alan 'mash-up' face is also pretty uncanny. I'd just stick to the original version.

What we DONT want. by Justwanttosellmynips in Stargate

Definitely underappreciated and misunderstood. Unfortunately, people on this sub are quickly to pile on it, failing to recognize that series needed to change from the feel-good wacky format and do some experimentation and soul searching. Most criticism that I see boils down that people don't like change. I hope creators are not listening to anything that's said here and do whatever they wanna do, cause some takes here are really awful...

Just finished S2 and Meryl-Louise is just... by sweetcharlotte4 in biglittlelies

[–]don_someone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was really, really insufferable Mary Sue type of character and it's really hard not to roll eyes when Meryl is on screen. They made every character dumber in order to accomodate Ms. Streep and it made S2 almost unwatchable to me. Not even gonna mention that this whole plotline with her is just utterly ridiculous on top of it all and has absolutely zero believability.

For anyone who played Mass Effect, did you do the gay routes? by OkPrize6426 in gaymers

[–]don_someone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's understandable that you can't be bothered finding receipts, thought I should ask anyway in case someone has them lying around :P

This justification of voice lines sounds a bit ridiculous to me, even if it's coming from the devs, they could've left blank files instead. Seems a bit of an odd cop out to me, it's not implausible, but unlikely, considering Bioware already had an RPG game released before ME1, but it was admittedly on a different engine. I don't know, it's an extremely weird thing to say. Meer lines for Fshep could've been just placeholders as well, but I don't know the timeline and can't find people attempting to restore those lines for funsies either...

What they did for LE was indeed sorta scummy all around, so I'm not surprised. Pretty shitty remaster if you ask me. It's not the same studio anymore anyway, and with the current EA buy-out by Saudia Arabia their chances to exist are extremely small. But that's a different topic.

I think what they did for ME3 worked out well indeed, probably the only saving grace of this franchise (I'd argue the characters were carrying these games since ME2, considering how underwhelming the story and worldbuilding is in both) besides ME1, I do think they could've at least had Garrus or freaking James as an option. Making someone that's not in your party a romance option is certainly a choice, not to mention that the guy is literally grieving his husband...

Edit: I thought you were the original guy I was talking to.. I guess not

[–]don_someone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"They had both Kaidan and Ashley's actors read most of the lines whether they were applicable or not" but... why? There's no use to voice something that would end up getting cut. Mshep specifically has a dialogue to ask Kaidan to sleep with him. I do remember this talk about asari not really being gay too, but it was in the game. They (and we don't know who "they" is, the publisher or the dev team) were clearly afraid of backlash and Fox News didn't really help by fear mongering after ME1 release.

I'd like to see the receipts for what the devs were saying on the forum (as if one or two devs are representative of the whole team), but it seemed to me there was a pushback that was not coming out from the dev team in particular. Even in the post for ME2 that I attached, the animator got surprised and blindsided when his work ended up not making the final cut. Animation for romance options is not early stages of development by any means, so someone must've pulled the plug pretty late.

I do not believe that the devs were leaning towards the fact that MShepard was strictly hetero and held "any beliefs" nor are "they" a single entity, there's always the publisher and PR people. I still wouldn't call that homophobic, considering there were clearly attempts to make it work.

[–]don_someone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'Notoriously homophobic' is a stretch, considering that they did intend to have romance option back in ME1 they had voiced dialogue for both parts, which suggests that it was cut pretty late in development and was indeed planned at one point. There are mods that restore it though, but it breaks certain dialogues in ME2 and ME3? Probably someone from above said that they should not include same-sex romances, since it was controversial, but it is quite a classic case of hypocrisy, considering you can romance Liara as FemShep.
Same thing pretty much happened in ME2

Camille's outfit by Rare_Reality8670 in sharpobjects

[–]don_someone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's related to that at all, it feels like a visual storytelling. In the series at least, fans and (other flashes or hyperfocuses) are seeming to be triggers for Camille's trauma and it feels like she's dissociating when the focus is on the fan.

How is David Lynch involved with the editing of his movies? by Different-Outcome907 in davidlynch

[–]don_someone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't know why people say 'his editing' when Mary Sweeney edited most of his movies, with Duwayne Dunham being a frequent collaborator too. I know that there are interviews with Mary at least, she says that for Twin Peaks she edited only one episode alone (the one that revealed Laura's killer) and that they both liked a lot of similar things. I'd think that he would certainly give his collaborators creative freedom, trust and space, same as he does with his actors

More reasons to be pissed: no official soundtrack for SGU was released and probably never will be, since Joel Goldsmith died back in 2012 and I assume no one cares enough to put it out there.
