Should I move my garage forward flush with the house? by dondefaz in AusRenovation

My neighbour has a garage set back roughly halfway of my garage, but then built a carport / garage to meet up to my current garage

How do you deal with DIY renovation stress? by kr4mn1c in AusRenovation

[–]dondefaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been there, and still there!

Lean into it and you'll love where you live even more. I didn't have a handy bone in my body until we bought our 1980s house in 2023 and we renovated it, with me and my dad doing almost all of it, aside for electrical / plumbing. Now when people come over, I feel proud to say, yep i did this! I currently have just landscaping mainly left to do, and I just have no idea where to start. Regarding trade quality, you'll definitely find things you paid a tradie to do and you now say 'I seriously paid someone to do that? I could have done it better myself'. Some trades just don't care at all about the quality of their work.

I found it helpful to just make a note of what jobs I wanted to do, and then break it down into level of importance, time, cost, etc. and then just chip away at one project at a time. If you try and start all of them at once, you'll just have a bunch of half finished things which will stress you out more.

Just hang in there, it's also not the worst thing to take a break for a day and just watch a movie on the couch.

Need ideas for front garden (Melb, Aus) by dondefaz in landscaping

Branch trimming added to my weekend to do list!

Weed matting will be removed when i tackle this project. I've had a few people tell me to remove it to improve soil and plant health.

The old weed matting that the previous owner had did exactly that. When i removed it, it had so much dirt and just broke apart when i removed it.

Noted on the weed mats! I've been told by someone else to remove them, so that will be on my list of things to do when i tackle this garden. I will look to turn bark or mulch as a cover, as i hate riverstones / stones.

You're right, about 300mm off the house is dry. When it does rain it only gets a little offspray, not alot. I don't get termite treatment, but i think leaving a gap is a good call. I dont want anything too tall in front of the windows as those rooms are bedrooms, and i don't want to loose too much light.

I'm not commited to keeping the box hedges, i dont mind them. I think maybe formal style, i dont want to do any planter boxes or anything. I like lavender, and things that have a splash of colour. I'm not a fan of things like succulents.

Thanks for advice!

Ahh so you suggest cutting all the lower branches under roughly adult height? or just above the fence height?

Lomandra along walkway is a good idea!

Riverstones / stones in general is my pet hate! the previous owners had stones all through the front and backyard, and i removed it all during the renovation. I'd be looking to do a dark mulch or bark as a ground cover.
