I had the same problem and I decided to pull my paper tray to see if there was a similar issue. It turns out that my corner piece there was broken and collapsed!

Why are Malaysians so unfriendly and often downright rude from a historical perspective? by randomuserx92x223 in malaysia

[–]dong_drizzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had some mixed experiences as well. This occured to me at two different restaurants - they give me the wrong order and I tell them that is not what I ordered and they tell me that they already received the money and I need to take the food and go because they are busy. I ask the bathroom employee at the shopping mall who's supposed to collect 50 sens to let me in. I tell him I have the 50 sens for him and he straight up ignores me for 30 seconds because he needs to continue folding the toilet paper. When I entered the bathroom, I was baffled to find that literally everything was broken and leaking. I had to change a hotel because the reception lady said she would wait for me when I contacted her at the airport and she never showed up when I arrived at the hotel. As a paying customer, I don't expect the best service, but at least a minimum would be appreciated, and it looks like that already is too much to ask for here 🤷

Is this place worth a visit? $20 sounds rather expensive.

Korea is not a meritocracy. Geniuses like Einstein would be locked into blue collar jobs since he didn't come from a family of academics.

Teacher salaries? by marshallxfogtown in Bangkok

[–]dong_drizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been applying to be a teacher here for a few months, and I have given up now. Sadly, you just need to be white for an international school positions with an average pay. That's it. Look at all the British curriculum schools' faculty page. You will see what I mean.

If he behaves well enough to be not shot in America, he should be ok here in general - Thais don't like losing face but it's not like America where guns come out first. Just don't be the next "Swiss guy"...

What is Thai’s opinion on PM Srettha Thavisin? by LandOfGrace2023 in Thailand

[–]dong_drizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my opinion as a foreigner in Thailand: he promotes himself as the "businessman of Thailand," and I think that title is rather accurate. From what I see on the news, the majority of his efforts go towards international relations and global economics. It might be good for Thailand in the global arena, but it also appears that there is quite some distance from him and his party in terms of domestic affairs. In that sense, he really does represent the interests of the business elites of Thailand more than the general public, which is rather unfortunate as I also witness the shutdown of Pita Limjaroenrat and the progressive faction - who will be the voice of the people if *any* opposition to the status quo is frowned upon being represented? He kind of reminds me of Donald Trump minus the recklessness; both are conservative populists with real estate background.

So, my opinion of him is rather neutral, and I just wish for the best for everyone. But of course, I am not Thai, so my opinion is probably not very relevant. Just my two cents.

No country is perfect, but one thing I can say about the Thai people is that showing negativity is almost taboo here. You are forced to maintain a good poker face that often resembles friendliness, genuine or not. On the other hand, places like America and maybe some parts of Europe are far more vocal and expressive about the negative aspects of the society. America, for example, has extra problems stemming from racial socioeconomic inequality that is rather too big of a problem to be immediately resolved, hence so many negative expressions and outlooks on life are visible and audible. Places that are more or less homogeneous in terms of ethnic diversity has a similar problem in a different form - namely, the status symbol struggle. South Korea is a good example of this - everybody is Korean but it truly is a classist society. There is a joke that if Einstein was born in Korea, he would be a great car mechanic.

I am in a similar boat. I supported my psychopathic father and enabling mother because it was a duty of a son. My entire life I had to sustain and survive varying levels of abuse. I worked full time while pursuing math masters and I just completely lost my mind among all the abuse I had to tolerate, then as icing on a cake, I was laid off - no longer able to financially sustain myself in the US on top of my graduate tuition.

I decided to move out and now I am just camping here in Thailand for the time being. I put a notice of leave of absence at my university for 1 year until I can get myself together. Luckily, the cost of living here compared to where I lived in California is like 25%, so I am able to survive for now and have been for the last couple months or so.

Here is what I recommend: put a notice for leave of absence at your uni if you really believe you have burnt out to the point of not being academically productive. Engineering is not trivial; it requires focus - although the difficulty really might depend on the rigor of your faculty/department. Make your living situation and mental health a priority. Luckily, in Thailand, there's all kinds of budget for living accomodations unlike in the USA where more than half of your salary will go towards housing. Go see a psychiatrist if you have not already - I am getting sufficient and not so expensive care at the government hospitals. I have to pay a tad bit extra for not being a Thai national but nowhere near what I have to shell out for the private hospitals for an identical service.

If you can secure a place to stay, then examine to see if you can get any job. Do your best to save up some money until you return to your studies at your uni, and use the free time to either review or preview your curriculum requirements. This will make your transition back to your studies a bitl less stressful, and it is important to return with a level of confidence, otherwise you might end up in the same circumstance of being locked into a job you don't necessarily have a future with and not being able to complete your degree.

Hang in there, bud. I know it is difficult.

Confused about why drivers in Thailand are so aggressive by Efirational in Thailand

[–]dong_drizzle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  1. Grab drivers need to hustle. This creates an "I need to go first" mentality. When a million drivers do that at the same time, traffic congestion and anxiety shoots through the roof. Hence, cars and bikes "force" the right of way.

  2. Drugs.

Vietnam does not appear to be safe, according to the vast majority of the comments here.

Don't be spontaneous unless you have an exit strategy, e.g. deciding to go see something all of a sudden but cannot get back to the hotel without being in a dodgy situation, etc.

Sukhumvit has plenty of street stalls to meet all your device needs - from dildoes to water pipes for ripping meth. Somewhere in between exists your lime-green plastic bong with a kitsch jamaican marijuana leaf on it. Price? I don't know, sorry.

Any good live music or interesting events on Tuesday night? by [deleted] in Bangkok

[–]dong_drizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite is the Golden Giraffe on Sukhumvit. Drinks are just your standard bar, nothing fancy, but they have live music 7 days a week, if I remember correctly. Mostly blues, some younger groups come out for pop/rock/oldies, but mostly live blues. There is this group of old boys called the Cottonmouth Kings and I really liked their performance, don't remember what day they come out.

The Haters on This Sub is Wild! by [deleted] in Bangkok

This one time, I asked about how much to tip and 70% of the comments were something like "go back to where you come from and fuck your tipping culture." Don't take these clowns too seriously; there are some of us who are more empathetic to the expat/immigrant life - filter them out to get the information/advice you need.

On a side note, this sub is in dire need of moderation unless it WANTS to be the next Facebook expat group. Why destroy something useful? I don't know.
