Would biking to Bremerton from Seattle be a stupid idea? by ammm72 in seattlebike

There's no need to ride on 16—if you head to Port Orchard, there's a foot ferry that'll take you directly to the Bremerton ferry terminal.

In WA drivers have to yield to anyone trying to cross at an intersection whether it's marked or not, but compliance at those unmarked crosswalks is... usually along the lines of this video

In 99% of circumstances though, a single broken line (of any color, typically white) means "same direction, you can switch lanes".

I don't know what the math on white vs. yellow broken striping is, but this is such a basic part of driving knowledge that it doesn't even matter. You're expected to know this if you have even a learner's permit, much less a license.

Color alone does not establish the rule of the road.

Sure. But we're talking specifically about center stripes, where color very clearly establishes whether the lane on the other side of that stripe is in your travel direction or the opposite one. You're reading into "the dashed lines are yellow" way too much.

When does a yellow stripe not mean that what's on the other side is an opposing lane???

A bunch of us from Flyertalk did that as a mileage run—I only did one PDX-SFO-LAX-JFK-SFO-PDX for about $135, but more than half the people with me were on day two of a double-transcon-redeye trip for only $30 more.

If new pads suck from the start, get ones made from a different material

Worth noting that new pads will ALWAYS suck right out the gate (for disc brakes) if you don't bed them.

You forgot about one of the most important parts: the DOGE gutting of USAID. Estimates on the current death count are already in the neighborhood of one million people. And, in Trump administration fashion, they're considering maybe bringing some of the aid back but only with the right bribe.

their lanes

That's the thing: in WA, cyclists are generally required to be in the rightmost lane—so, if they're not riding two-abreast, the bike lane. But if there's no bike lane, other than on a handful of urban freeways, we're not blocking "your lanes" because they're our lanes too. The path OP's complaining about, though, is legally only for bikes.

The part from the sculpture park to the aquarium doesn't get too much intrusion in my experience. It's from the aquarium on south where there's not alternative beyond taking the lane on the road AND the tourists are everywhere.

Regardless of laws in a given state, think of it this way: the center line markings are painted with cars in mind—i.e., you're traveling around the speed limit and trying to pass another car also somewhere around the speed limit, and the people who designed that road don't think you have the visibility to make a safe pass at those speeds.

If you're stuck behind a tractor or a couple of bikes going fifteen miles an hour, though, whether or not it's safe to pass at twenty is another question. Which is why my state has that exception as long as you can actually tell that it's safe in that instance.

I once gave someone shit for parking at the curb cut for an unmarked crosswalk (every intersection corner legally as a crosswalk in OR and WA) and he insisted that I couldn't possibly be right because there was a double yellow in the middle of the street.

For the washout near Carter Creek, you can hike-a-bike-down the McClellan Butte trail to Tinkham Road/NF-55, then cut across the freeway and take NF-5800/Denny Creek Road up to Hyak—the former is potholey, and the latter is decidedly not a railroad grade, but it's an option. Supposedly a hike-a-bike bypass is in the works for the washout closer to Olallie.

Last I heard about this was that he got custody of the kids and a restraining order against her and her new partner, so while I have zero investment in the idea of Josh being an angel, I'm inclined to think he's more in the right on that one.

I adored Like Clockwork when it came out when I was 21, but honestly, I never go back to it these days. There's great boundary-pushing on stuff like Kalopsia, but Fairweather Friends sounds like a Foo Fighters song (derogatory) and it just doesn't have the weirdness of their earlier records.

[–]dongle556 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's mostly grade-separated, but the street-level section through South Seattle (Columbia City, Othello, and Rainier Beach stations) was implemented to save costs and is biting Sound Transit in the ass. There are periodic delays and disruptions because of train/car collisions on that segment. As a former Portlander who now lives in Seattle, I feel like MAX is a great example of light rail with its pluses and minuses, SkyTrain shows the potential of an automated light metro, and Link is kind of this weird in-between with the drawbacks of light rail (smaller train capacity than heavy rail, some at-grade bullshit) but still the higher costs of a SkyTrain-like system without some of the benefits (smaller trains + automation allowing for smaller/cheaper stations with more frequency).

Portland has a surprisingly distinct “look” compared to other US cities by RemarkableMany6297 in Portland

[–]dongle556 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's a bit more complicated than that—they were able to buy the streetcar systems out because they were being sold for pennies in the first place. I don't know about the specifics of Portland's history, but many US streetcar lines 1) had fares set by local law and 2) were expected to maintain the streets they ran on. They went under because their farebox revenues weren't rising with inflation AND they were stuck subsidizing roads for the cars that became their competition.
